  1. Littlems... They may be good intentions you have and that you have legitimate reasons for moving XP from one machine to another, but OEM is OEM, and taking it and putting it on another machine is very much a no no. Also, 8 netbooks and 2 product codes on your old machines makes the whole thing doubley so. I'd strongly advise against what you are about to do and do one of the following: - send them back (if its possible with where you got them from and you havent opened them all up) and get ones with XP on them - buy 8 XP OEM media kits that have the COA with them - probably a better option, but contact a supplier that can provide you with open select agreement for more than 5 licenses so you might find that a option [dont have time to look at the moment] Regards Nath
  2. For info, they just directed me to their site to get the software. Didnt mention a network edition [tho i believe there was a difference "back in the day"]... So long as u have a valid key [i.e. you have got a prommy board and software with it] you can use the said key to download the software from their site. And use whateverthesetupiscalled.exe /a to create a administrative installation at the location you choose. This can be modified or transformed as already mentioned and deployed. Simple as... Nath.
  3. and ironically, both Netgear and Belkin AP's / ADSL routers have caused me problems whereas so far, i've had zero problems when using Linksys ones. weird isn't it? Nath.
  4. Exactly. The only benefits with Wireless-N over G that I can see based on your current feed would be: Increase wireless range (weigh up the cost of the WRT160 vs multiple WRT54GL's] Faster (possibly concurrent) speeds to the WAP itself Its worth noting that just having one side of things wireless-n is worth it too i.e. My friend got a tasty laptop recently that has Wireless-N in it. He was able to see about 5 more WAP's that I have never noticed before, presumably they are across the street, and at his house, he is able to pick up his Wireless-G Router that is downstairs with a normal wireless BT phone next to it (usually causes interference) and he was upstairs - up two floors - and was getting 3/4 bars consistantly wherever he was on his floor. Big old house too so while theres not much between floors, the walls are thick and not plasterboard type walls, so its quite impressive. To me that tells me that just having a wireless-N card attempting to connect to Wireless-G routers is still better than G to G. So if you were to get the laptops with N in them, its likely to be an advantage in itself. And you're right, they may all connect at 40M+ but it still wont be able to pull more than 100M down from the uplink so its worth considering all that too. Hope that made sense logically hehe Cheers Nath
  5. Yeah Dave... definately the GL over the G because as I mentioned, the GL has more RAM in it and should you go for WRT or not, its a better unit all round. Sorry... i may have rambled a bit there... i just meant that it works well with all of its functions. And the Wireless range is pretty good (but naturally, everything makes a different to the wireless range as we all know etc hehe). And yes, it does what you ask and much much more You can use DD-WRT on a WRT160N also btw I believe Its in the early stages of support but i've read it works and with the Wireless-N also. Even if you arent looking to set up a wireless mesh [otherwise known as Wireless Distribution System, and there are probably other types], its worth getting because then at least you have that option later on if you want to extend the wireless range, you get another one and set it up within the range - setting up WDS on both and there you go. Obviously, it takes a bit of patience if you havent done it before but i'm not exactly a expert in the field and I managed it so its worth considering as a option down the line... But of course, you need the right WAP's in order to achieve it as theres a surprising amount of WAP's out there that dont support it, and its useful to use the same hardware for the sake of sanity if nothing else Cheers Nath.
  6. I use DD-WRT with a Linksys WRT54GL, and have dasiy chained them in the past [long time ago - had to get different gear on account of the signal strength between buildings needing to be a bit stronger hehe ]. What do you want to know about them? If your asking can you make a big mesh of them using that firmware, then yes you can. It supports everything on the WRT54GL [bar wireless N tech naturally] as far as i'm aware, as the WRT54G and GS' devices no longer had enough firmware to hold the full firmware and you had to use a cutdown one (at the time I got my GL that is). I was so impressed with them that i abandoned my old 'all in one' ADSL router, and switched to a Zyxel ADSL Network Modem / Single Port ADSL Router [running in Bridge Mode] and combined it with a WRT54GL... Rock solid connections ever since, and after i replaced them at work to make a stronger links with some purpose made directional Antenna's and AP's, I used them just as wifi access points at work and never had any probs with them really. One was being used as a switch more than it was a AP and held its own just fine If you want to know more about them, lemme know Cheers Nath
  7. You might want to edit that link you included m25man Ta.
  8. Wish I knew what he meant by "dump and run".... Nath.
  9. Aye Michael... Had a feeling where you were going with this, but this will negate our security policy, or I'd have done this to sort the issue.
  10. Well if a user doesnt have permission to his own HKCU hive, i'd think AutoCAD is the least of our worries. Incidentally, yes, he has full perms to his own hive from what i saw. Nath.
  11. Hi guys... thanks for the replies... Michael: Add the "domain users" group to what though? Hiding the C drive isnt a issue... besides which, if the program is wrote to the ccorrect specifications, it wouldnt matter if the C drive is hidden hehe Thanks for the point about Software Restriction Policies... had forgetten about that, although knowing what to allow fully is the issue. As i said, I've done all the obvious directories that I can think of so far... Hi p858snake... Not quite following you here but the program works fine if you make the user a local admin... this has populated his Application Data folder & user registry hive with the data needed, but then goes back to not doing anything if you remove the user from the Local Administrators group. Any other thoughts people or has no one got this to work? Nath.
  12. Hi all As my google-ing and best efforts seem to be more of a waste of time than a chocolate teapot, i thought I'd ask the audience on this one. Has any of you good good people managed to get AutoCAD, of any description, to work with users that aren't administrators? Despite the lovely "Designed for Windows XP" logo on the side, I think they kind of skipped a few things on that hehe Nothing on the side of the box where the requirements are listed say users have to be Administrators, so I'm thinking there simply must be a way to do it. I would seriously hope that 2008/9 etc will be better than this annoyance. Have tried all the usual "give Everybody access on all the directories created etc"... Basically, if the user is made a local admin on the machine, it works (although I think it reconfigures itself first) and if removed, double clicking the icon does literally nothing. I've checked the MSI of the installer and its a per machine based install apparently. Any of you good folk have any thoughts on this as we cant make people local admins on their desktops/laptops? Cheers for any help Nath.
  13. Ok guys.... lets cool down on where this is going...
  14. hehe soz... was just doing my usual spyware rant Is it only going to be used to store files on? If so, have you considered a NAS system to do the task? [apologises if you've already discussed this... its sort of a flying stop by EG before i go out] Although this wouldnt be enough, I just bought a NAS for home and its ideal for a small workgroup if thats all you have at your establishment. Buffalo Technology - Products - LinkStation Mini™ I only went for this one for the space saving, features, performance, and because I've used the Buffalo Terastations in my working career and they've done a neat job for me so far. Otherwise I'd suggest Server 2003 unless you are planning to setup something to test it out first, in which case 2008 might be worth a shot, and if its only to be used as storage, keep users from logging on to it directly. My rule of thumb is the more people with logon access to a server, the more chances of disaster can happen Any more questions, fire away or send me a PM and grab me on messenger / EG's jabber server Nath.
  15. hehe what about the one that came with the machine? Nowt wrong with XP so long as your up-to-date with the windows updates, have a AV product installed and protecting [AVG Free with the Auto Heal ticked - it isnt by default bear in mind], and multiple Anti-Spyware products - as you have discovered - are needed [i recommend Spybot - S&D, SpywareBlaster and Windows Defender as its not all bad - just doesnt detect everything]. These are primarily what I'd suggest for home btw, if you are on about a work computer, you should ensure you have adequate proxy filtering to prevent connection to malicious sites, along with decent AV protection that can detect any spyware slipping through the net (as it were) With the above, especially the immunising of Spybot & the protection of SpywareBlaster, its kept me safe in my browsing needs. There are all in one products like Spyware Doctor that I'm told are quite good, but i havent really needed to use them myself. Unfortunately, none of it is 100% so using caution is the best defense hehe Regards Nath.
  16. lol amen to that Tony
  17. Same here... And I dont mind the ads in Home... so long as they keep it to what its like currently and dont make them appear inconvieniently... after all, we all see plenty of ads each day, it'll feel more like being at Home really (see what i did there? hehe) EDIT: Forgot to mention that to those comparing the differences between PS3 and 360's.... dont! Or at least keep it on another thread And also remember that Live has been out much longer than the PSN (i dont count the previous incarnation with the PS2 as the Network Station thingy was utter rubbish - but at least it was just down to the games having the ability and providing you'd setup a Network Connection up, you were good to go (ummm......im including myself in my note ) So back to Home comments folks... N.
  18. hehe Missed the Santa i think... havent been on for a few weeks That train game is quite good fun. Hope they add some more games to the arcade and some more machines too hehe
  19. I managed to get a closed beta invite before the open beta started (although it was only about 3 or so weeks hehe) and there was even less content then. They did have lobby's and more stuff I'm told before this phase started but needed to take it out to refine a few things and attempt to stress test (through the additional closed invites like I got). I guess they completely underestimated the take up of the open beta, which IMO is a little silly considering how long Home has been hyped and discussed on PS3 forums since its initial mention by Sony. Obviously, the idea of Home isnt exactly new (being that barebones wise, its a virtual online environment that many gamers are already used to using), but the execution and bringing together of various ideas to use in Home could make it something worthwhile. The lobby systems look good and will return to the beta I'm sure, and for those that have tried it and are wondering how to get more clothes, try getting some high scores on the little arcade machines in the Bowling Alley The environments are a little small at the moment but I imagine Sony have plans to extend them. Oh, one last thing guys, its a beta... dont expect perfection just yet hehe (and yes, Sony have had ages to make this, but you know Sony, they dont rush stuff do they? hehe ) Cheers Nath
  20. Can the original poster please reply to this thread to confirm they are a actual person please? Thanks Nath.
  21. Usually, thats quite a common thing and random pages [or in this case, a thread] will cause it based on any content on the page. The best bet is to request that the LEA allows the site so that it doesnt get keyword based content filtering on pages served from edugeek. You'll probably bump into lots of threads like this otherwise. Regards Nath.
  22. Do you mean that you have a newer version of Office with the new machine, whereas the old machine has a older version of office? Also, I'm assuming from the post that you are talking about a macro within a Excel worksheet correct? I'm not too hot on macros within Excel, but i'm asking to help others gain more information into the problem for you Good luck Nath.
  23. You could try longer pings, and longer packets in the pings Leave it on continual pinging until you stop it too perhaps.
  24. http://www.edugeek.net/forums/educational-software/4851-eclipse-library-software.html Have you looked through this thread? We never used Search Star when i was at the school so cant be of help regarding that, but the thread above does mention it [i've only re-checked the first page ]. The main App used to work well Regards Nath.
