Is that not just plain shocking, that they can buy a company with a large user base and then charge those users to migrate to it's platform...? Or is that just how it works...?

We have the same problem here, but I haven't had time to look into it in any detail. Just CTRL+ALT+DEL, sign out and sign in works, but it still takes a while...

And I'm guessing so far 4,998 websites have had to be migrated and paid for? Are Juniper Education part of Juniper Networks "The Hewlett Packard Enterprise's (HPE's) pending acquisition of Juniper Networks"

Does this not work in reverse? Many years ago we used to have a.vbs script that did this, but we also had another one that put the proxy details back in. Does the proxy address change frequently?

I don't find Sophos Phish cartoon like, there's hundreds of templates and they're pretty good... ...or do you mean the training? I have to admit I haven't looked at that. Sophos also seems to give you the option to send different templates within a campaign and spread it over a longer period. I didn't do that today and the fact that they all got a dodgy email was apparently the talk of the staff room at lunch time. Still it got awareness up I guess, so that's a good thing and I've now had 5 staff members ask me about it.

We used to use Sophos Phish, not extensively (and not for a while if I'm honest...), so I can't probably give you the level of detail you require (and can't give you cost as it's bundled with the subscription). However, it worked well for us, it has pretty much what I'd expect... training, lots of templates, breakdowns of who did what etc. We've been on GMail for a few years and found their Spam/Phishing filters to be really good and I guess I've got a little complacent, so you actually reminded me to fire it up and test one today. I guess Spam/Phishing getting through must be quite rare these days as I've already had 3 staff members come to me and tell me they've got a dodgy email (although I'll admit it was a very easy one as I hadn't done it in a long time).

Wait, what?! So, just like installing it... I'm sure I remember it being easier opening control panel > add/remove > change > select or deselect, which my remote user could have pretty much done themselves. Well, thanks M$... another mighty leap forwa..... oh no... I mean backwards... The moment when I created a new config file and only put Outlook... It uninstalled all the other programs. I didn't realise I only had to add a line to the original config (which luckily I found from the original install)!

I'd be surprised if many people knew the legislation to that level of detail. We use an onsite MIS so we can keep backups forever if we wanted (GDPR aside), but I don't think we do. Technically, within it (and I guess any other MIS) isn't the current backup, all the data for the previous years. Or as asked above, do you need it as a separate, stand alone backup of attendance? Surely any modern MIS should provide the ability to abide by current legislation?

Possibly a classroom management issue? I guess depending on what part of lesson the video is shown, if it's sidebar adverts that are the main problem, the video should be on a tab, queued up and full screen. Cinema mode also puts the sidebar underneath the video if that helps?

Just wanted to know the best way to deal with SIMS/FMS once an MIS migration happens? We are on-prem, but I don't want to just turn the server off... I imagine there might be things we will need to refer back to (our finance dept. is getting nervous about losing access), how do I mothball it but keep it accessible somehow etc. Obviously it needs to be secure, do you delete 99% of the users, do you remove things like SOLUS, how do you remove SIMS from all the computers (as I understand there is no uninstaller)... Do you limit SQL connections somehow? I take it ESS haven't found a way to nuke the SIMS server or make it inoperable somehow after a certain date, when they get confirmation you won't be renewing your contract? So many questions! As I'm sure quite a few of us are going through this soon, or have already done it, if anyone has got a step by step checklist, that would be great!

You don't say if this is new behaviour, a new install, or if anything has changed with these users/devices but hopefully you've fixed it by now. To fix FMS over the years I've seen the following advice... usually, a reinstall, copy directory from a working computer, make sure FMSconnect.ini is correct, permissions to the FMS folders, make sure an active printer is installed, made default and selected... I haven't had this particular error (looks like an SQL error), however to help (in order): 1. Search Edugeek /forums/mis-systems/29918-create-user-dsn-has-failed.html 2. I have a remote wfh user who has requested Outlook, however this isn't included in our standard Office deployment as there are only 2 or 3 users with multiple mailboxes and 99% of the staff use webmail. In previous versions of Office I seem to remember being able to go into 'control panel > uninstall program > change' and this used to bring up an Office dialogue, where you could add or remove individual Office apps/programs. I've tested doing this in the hope I could guide the user, but I get 2 options 'quick repair' or 'online repair' which I don't want to try unless there are further dialogues... I've also tried uninstall which can sometimes have other options, but it appears it is just the uninstaller.

No help for the actual power button, but the for the 2 (non-hp) computers I've had this problem on I never bothered actually 'fixing' them... The first was an big old ATX case which luckily had a reset button (remember those?), so I just took the wires from the power button pins on the motherboard header and put them on those pins instead! The second was a workaround that I've now actually adopted as my standard set-up. In the BIOS I've set the power options to be Power On after Power Loss. This means when I shutdown the computer I always turn it off at the plug socket and so whenever I turn the on the power, the computer just starts... Obviously no good if you're the sleep/suspend type...

Might be too late, but as it's presumably not internet facing and if it was just the look and feel of XP, did you consider an XP skin/mode for something a 'little' bit more modern like 7, as long as the games/apps ran? At least you wouldn't be so limited for hardware choices. EDIT: I know a little of how you feel. My now deceased Grandfather decided to buy himself a laptop at the age of 90 something... even though it had an RM type 'old people's' overlay, he just couldn't get his head around it at all (no idea why he decided he wanted one). Also, it required a 2 hour round trip as I was his tech support until he finally gave in and admitted he couldn't cope with it. Ending with another trip for me to unplug it all and box it up to be sent back...

I think I had a GPO set years ago to require a profile as I wanted everyone to use Chrome with their school Google account, but it's never asked me this until a couple of weeks ago.

FTFY... I know it's pessimistic, but really this is the way of humanity. You give people a reason they will hate each other (sometimes not much of a reason), you give people guns and they will shoot each other, you give people the internet and social media, soon you will find the worst of humanity spewed out across the web (and not even in the dark corners anymore). You know the NRA slogan 'guns don't kill people, people kill people'...? Don't get me wrong, I'm fairly anti gun, because I've grown up in the UK and never hunted or done any gun related sport (unless you include Counterstrike) and to my mind almost nobody actually needs a gun of any sort... but the statement is true. Social media as such isn't the problem, we are... (I'm not going to get all 'as a species we are fundamentally a plague upon the earth' but you get my point). I know they've got the algorithms to keep you scrolling just like computer games do to keep you playing and the data mining to push adverts and content based on your interests or what you've searched for (which isn't always advisable given the nature of some of the content out there)... But, the problem is people, always has been and always will be, nothing is new, the internet and social media only makes it easier, magnifies it, spreads it further and quicker, makes it accessible but also invasive and influential on a massive scale. My OH and I often comment when we've looked up how to do something, where to find something or even how old someone is... 'how did we survive before the World Wide Web..?' and we're of a generation that's probably only really had it for half our adult life. As in how did we do anything before phones, computers, etc. But I guess we had a formative part of our life grounded in reality (actually I'm VERY glad social media was not around in my late teens/early 20s), not like kids today who have their head in the clouds from day one. Maybe we just haven't advanced enough and our brains haven't evolved quickly enough to deal with it, but kids are plugged in to the Matrix from birth now. The internet is like politics or religion, it could be used for so much good but very rarely is and that's our fault, if we weren't intrinsically horrible, there would be nothing horrible on the internet. As usual we need policing and protecting from ourselves...

Interesting play on words, I'd think 'up to date' would mean up to the 'current date', I thought there'd been a few holes in BIOS/UEFI over the years that have had to be plugged. I don't know what the % is, or even the chances of someone using a BIOS/UEFI exploit is these days. Just playing 'Devil's Advocate' really to see if there was any more weight the OP could put behind his case... Oh and I also remember someone on this very forum saying that 12 year old computers were a security risk because of it...
