As the title says really... I am thinking of getting the CCTV up and running in the new house, but wondering how to get the HDMI signal downstairs to a TV rather than having to open the phone app and squint at a tiny screen in the middle of the night when something goes bump... In the old house I bashed a hole in the ceiling and pulled the cable down (in trunking) to a wall mounted TV in the bedroom, which I could quickly bring out of standby to see if anything was going on which required me to rush downstairs baseball bat in hand... I don't really want to start bashing holes in the new house (just yet), so wondered what were the best ways of achieving this wirelessly.

Yeah, I do but... I think I'm getting at the equivalent of plugging in the units themselves to the wall sockets, not the breaker/consumer unit behind them. Taking your example, I guess I'm talking more about the IEC leads that come (fused) with the product. In that instance it would be like shipping the computers with no leads and no information on what fuse to put in to the lead you'd have to supply...? True, although I had an expensive SELV Envirovent bathroom extractor fan in the last house (which I also left)... they even go a step further and include the switched fused spur and it had to be used even when coming off the lighting circuit! As for the lights, yes no need to put an extra fuse in the line when coming off the lighting circuit, but I've seen a lot of installations that come off sockets, so just wondered why no fuse information is included (as you'd have to fuse it coming off a socket). EDIT: Also the PIV has a 500W heater, so not just a 'bathroom fan'.

Can any DIY (or qualified) electricians tell me why nothing seems to come with a specified fuse rating these days? I recently moved house and sadly left my Nuaire PIV, but upgraded to heated Vent-Axia version in the new house. Unfortunately I had a few problems with the first one I purchased and the second also seems to have a few little quirks... I found that some of the issues I was experiencing, seemed to stem from the fact that I appear to have an older firmware as some of the menu items in the included (and on the website) instructions were just plain wrong. Things like the instruction manual (and the sticker on the unit) plainly stating the fan speed as adjustable between 19-49L/s but my unit having the options of setting 10-60L/s... However, trawling through the internet, I discovered an older version of the instructions that actually seemed to line up with the menu items and settings on my unit and this is where I found the switched spur was originally described as fused (3A). NEW OLD I had emailed support explaining the issues (I also asked why there was no fuse rating specified for the fixed wiring switched spur and was the unit itself fused internally) and received this reply: There is no requirement for the product itself to be fused as this is a requirement of the installation for the electrician to make sure it meets current IEE regs. This is why the comment has been removed from the manual. Does this mean it is now incumbent upon the electrician installing a device to work out the draw and appropriate fuse rating? Although I still can't see the reasoning behind removing the instruction that the unit should be on a 'switched fused spur', even if they no longer need to advise of the rating required...? I've also been looking at security lighting and notice none of the products specify what fuse rating it requires, although this might be different, it can't be assumed it will be wired into the house 5A lighting circuit as advice varies such as "Security lights can be wired into an existing lighting or power circuit, or to an exterior outlet with a transformer. You can also hardwire the lights to a switch." ...so why not include the required fuse rating?

This mis-communication, did it go along the lines of (substitute Computing staff for SLT/Business Manager etc.): Computing Lead: Hmmmm... I've seen another school using these new shiny things... So they pile them on the technician's desk with a post it note, demanding they get them working as 'there must be something wrong with the laptops'...

Normally I try not to get involved, however this was presented to me as 'I can't connect my work laptop to the Wi-Fi at home and I really need to get some work done over the holidays'... Unfortunately trying to get any technical details from them is painful (they didn't even know that the hub had a menu that you could log into and change settings)... Anyway, it would appear the the teacher has just got a new Virgin Hub/Router at home and initially I thought it might not be transmitting on 2.4GHz for some reason, but after giving detailed instructions on how to find the setting, apparently her brother had already 'done something' to make the Ring doorbell connect on 2.4GHz... so I'd also imagine the network settings are quite basic for that? Although it has been framed as a 'laptop' problem (the laptop is reasonably old, but it's the first time I've had this problem), however, some initial questioning actually seems to suggest a incompatibility between the laptop and new hub as the laptop can see other Wi-Fi networks in the local vicinity. The laptop apparently can't even see the SSID, so might rule out anything like Security settings (such as WPA2-PSK) and point to the new router's wireless standard (like 802.11ac)? Obviously I have given them an Ethernet cable for now...

Yeah, I think that from my research the heater only kicks in at loft temperature @ 5 C, so it's not 24/7 (although WINTER IS COMING) and that it's automatic although it can be adjusted manually (at least on the Nuaire I read about). There's just no nice central landing area to put it in a bungalow, so it's going to be blowing cold air directly into a living space. I know the heater is only going to take the edge off, but probably worth it.

I've recently moved house and unfortunately (for various reasons) decided to leave the PIV behind... I say unfortunately because in the new house I have had to start wiping down windows again every morning! So, I'm on the lookout for another one... as it's a bungalow and options for both suitable location and distance from living areas are limited I'm going to go with the heated version this time. I've looked at the heated version of my previous one and it is the Nuaire Drimaster Dri-Eco-Heat HCS, which seems to retail at roughly £450... however, whilst searching around to get a better price I've also seen a comparable model Vent Axia PureAir PIV Unit with Heater with comes in at £100 less. Both seem to get OK reviews, the main difference being the Nuaire one has controls in the diffuser. Seems like a no-brainer to go for the Vent-Axia one, am I missing something? EDIT: And now I've found a Manrose one for another £50 less than the Vent-Axia, I know we're possibly going down the quality scale here but...

A little less drastic than uninstalling/reinstalling... I just signed out, now when opening Adobe Acrobat Pro the 'Request Signature' option is there.... until I sign in (then it just disappears)! This makes me think there is definitely a 'setting' somewhere and it's not the application itself...

Thanks, I'd seen that and a couple of registry entries, but neither worked for me. Interestingly after an uninstall and reinstall, the option appeared briefly when Acrobat was opened initially and then just disappeared within a couple of seconds... I uninstalled and reinstalled it again and quickly clicked on Request Signature which worked until I clicked on 'show them where to sign' and then the application crashed. On restart the option had disappeared completely again... Does it rely on some sort of setting in the Adobe Admin Console, Privacy or Sharing restrictions policy or some sort of cloud storage option...?

I've been told to install Adobe Acrobat Pro. Amongst a few other extra PDF functions, one reason was for our Finance/Admin/SLT to be able to create PDFs and request signatures. Now I've installed it, that function is completely missing! Any ideas? The only clue I have is that when I try to run it as administrator, I can see the option behind the log-in page (however our administrator account doesn't have an Adobe account and seems to mess with the log-in so I can't actually access the application)... The annoying thing is this appears to be entirely possible on Adobe Acrobat Reader! EDIT: This came from someone higher up, so I didn't question it, but now I've looked it appears one of the other options (Combine PDFs) is also available on the free 'Reader' application...

I mean it's great everybody is so positive that I can chuck anything at it and it will just work.... But is it possible to get a keyboard that isn't supported (or just doesn't work)... I find the fact that there are 'system requirements' for a keyboard, a little disconcerting... Of course you don't as obviously your reply comes from the vantage point of having used Apple products extensively for a number of years. However, not being a Mac user I wasn't sure if generic £35 Mac keyboards and mice were going to be suitable as I was looking at the £99 official keyboards and £79 mice. I don't want to buy anything that's going to give issues... I can only go by my experience on the HDMI ports, as our HT needs a powered adaptor for our projectors whereas none of the other Windows based laptops do, whilst troubleshooting the problem I seem to remember reading somewhere they were underpowered... it also doesn't seem to be a very snug fit and the signal drops out if it's touched or whenever it's moved slightly (and it's not through over use as they never attach it to a monitor).

Not Mac desktop related as such, but Macbook... My HT decided that when they started here that they were too old to learn Windows and ordered themselves a Macbook Pro. They have now been told that they need a desk set-up due to Health and Safety DSE (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations... So, I'm here to ask what kind of silly money does the school have to spend to allow them to use the Macbook as a desktop. They won't use a normal keyboard so Mac compatible keyboard, mouse, monitor I guess... Macbook is something like a 2015 model, but I'm not entirely sure what input and output ports it has, only I know they can be fussy with a different HDMI standard (and who knows what else) etc. Some sort of dock (AND all the peripherals) or just USB keyboard, USB mouse and HDMI monitor? A few things spring to mind here, most importantly well done for staying alive but also congratulations on finally realising that, yes, the world turns without us and the sun rises each morning regardless of whether we are there to see it or not. Unfortunately all the hours of hard work that you did previously on the network, got it into a position whereby it could still function perfectly well without needing full hands-on, so that's a bittersweet compliment I guess... like 'well done for working so hard that when you nearly die we can still continue with T&L'... I still put a decent amount of effort in, do bits from home, work through lunch etc. I'm OK with that, it's occasional and a choice not a daily occurrence that I feel I 'have' to do... but not to the extent I used to, because a while ago it dawned on me that nothing in school is life or death (apart from maybe peanut allergies) and certainly not worth making myself ill for, so if you don't get that urgent and most important 'thing' they absolutely must have sorted before next lesson done (even though they haven't told you about it until 5 minutes before the lesson starts), they will just do something else, there will not really be any major impact on T&L no matter how much they moan, wail and gnash their teeth... a few times when I've spent a lunchtime/evening/weekend trying to sort something out, they will invariably have decided not to do it or changed what they want by the next day anyway... Which brings me to the final point... due to a recent change in our school, a colleague of mine (non I.T. related) recently found themselves under a huge amount of stress, with the pressure of getting a vast amount of work completed with quite serious deadlines looming and a potential scenario of needing to do their job very well or face questions of 'employment suitability' under the new regime. Anyway, they worked all summer despite feeling quite ill (unfortunately we are a small school with hardly anyone else in over the holiday and I, for the first time, had taken the time off to get ready to move house, so nobody really saw their decline)... and long story short, they fell critically ill the week before we returned in September. Like you this resulted in a near-death experience, major surgery, months of recovery and a life changing disability. We have managed to pretty much get through the transition without them, so although we miss them being around and it would have been a hundred times smoother with them here and less stress/work for everyone else, we would all much rather have picked up a little slack and taken on some of the workload from them if they had needed the time off to get well before any of this happened... maybe that's our fault for not realising at the time that they were struggling.

I have a very old desktop that won't keep bios settings even after replacing the CMOS battery, there are a few caps bulging so I think that whole subsystem is kaput lol! Also quite a few of the older style laptops had batteries that for some reason were hidden and require the laptop being pulled apart, I had one that needed the top off not the bottom.... Hope you don't get the soldered cable/heatwrap version... what a pain!

I'd be interested if anyone can tell me what the monitoring solution (Smoothwall/SENSO/etc.) does actually record in terms of identifying the 'user' of an iPad? It would appear from what @Brimstone says, there is no actual point in using shared iPads for monitoring... How does everybody else with class sets of iPads record that child 'x' had iPad 'y' at 'z' time/date? And does that method make you compliant with current DfE/KCSIE guidelines/recommendations?

We also use Meraki and I haven't found any setting that changes the camera's photo format to 'normal', stops it taking 'live' photos, or to turn on the preserving of those settings via the MDM... I started changing them all manually on each iPad, but eventually to get around the format issue (at least), I managed to get the HEIC codec onto any Windows machine that needs it.
