I guess anyone who uses both of these services through LGfL (or anyone who uses them as stand alone products) will be aware of these current issues...? I wish LGfL would keep a list of Network Managers and IT technicians at schools and send out emails when issues occur. I usually presume it's something wrong on my end and spend far too long looking for problems on my systems before I give up and raise a support request, only to find out LGfL knows all about it... I've asked about it before and again a few weeks ago when they were performing some maintenance on the reporting functions of the filtering system and was told "in this case the alert was the message that was placed on the portal, we are conscious not to flood everyone with alerts and prefer to target those specifically impacted."

There is no such thing as 'too much' dry cured bacon... The sea! Well, I guess apart from certain fish that only live in certain places (or being sold as hand-reared by mermaids or whatever), it might be harder to sell cod being caught in the 'Atlantic' as being much different to those caught in the 'North Sea'? *other seas and oceans available* So I wonder if M&S or Waitrose sell at a higher price. I guess if you buy food from there you expect to pay more probably, just because... but do you actually expect it to be a different/better quality product than Tesco...? Maybe if it's then made into a finished 'product', but not if it's just the fish... Actually I do seem to remember in another life I did a stint on a 'factory' butchers line... we had to put certain cuts of meat into polystyrene trays, same cuts... but different trays for different supermarkets. Pretty sure it was all from the same cows... That's funny, I always remember as a kid hearing the urban myth that ANY cheaper brand was the sweepings off the floor of a better 'name' brand.

Apparently sometimes it's about the standard or quality of the ingredients (for a single product like fruit, as @Jawloms says in his post, the product quality itself), sometimes it's even about where the ingredients/product is sourced. Quotes from a Mirror article on the subject (in particular @Dos_Box note the one about Morrisons butter): Sainsbury’s said: “There are many factors which inform product specification. This will dictate the range it is in.” Asda said the products had the “same overall ingredients” but “gradings differ.” Morrisons said: “Savers butter is sourced from inside and outside the UK. Standard butter will always be British.” Because obviously it costs more to drive it up the road from Devon, than it does to ship it in from $diety knows where! I picked up packaged BBQ flavoured chicken once from Asda for my salad... until I casually read the back of the package... Product of Thailand. My mind couldn't even comprehend why this was even a thing, but various articles put it at somewhere in the region of it being 28% cheaper than U.K. produced. I suppose even with the cost of shipping it half way round the world they can produce it cheaper, but I dread to think of the animal welfare and worker conditions (many news articles on that). So yes, cost of living crisis and all that and chicken is chicken, right?! But also I guess looking at the origin of your food may explain why sometimes you have to pay more to get a higher quality, U.K. sourced product...

There's a great debate about this in the guitar world with the Cort (cor-Tek) guitar factories in Indonesia/Korea/China. Beside their own Cort branded guitars PT Cort manufactures for Ibanez, Fender/Squier (includes amps), G&L, Gretsch, Laguna, Avalon/Lowden, Music Man, Schecter, Lakland, Strandberg, EVH, Chapman and Jackson among others. But just because the same factory makes the guitars, it doesn't mean they're in any way similar in quality (have the same specifications/hardware/wood) and I'd imagine each brand has their own strict QC standards. I know someone who is a great believer in the 'they all come from the same factory' idea... however, the thing is, as @sigma and @Fazza says, it might be made at the same factory (which makes a lot of sense regarding scale, staff training, machinery and logistics), but it most probably has different quality ingredients etc. I doubt any business can afford to make the same quality end product and then just have it packaged differently and sold cheaper, it doesn't make any sense, unless there are other market forces and economies of scale at play, but I still doubt it's the 'same quality' of product... mostly 'evidence' of this is purely anecdotal. You have to look at the product not who is making it, I mean a factory gets an order to make a product and the brand 'X' who makes the order specifies what goes into the product. If supermarket 'Y' also make an order with that factory to supply a 'similar' product, they will also have to specify what goes into making the product. My guess is that the cheaper brand will have less 'quality' components/ingredients. As with most things in life, whether that actually means anything or not is all down to personal taste/perceived brand loyalty/preference... I've seen many supermarket 'own brand' taste tests that have had them come out on top versus the 'name brands'. I personally don't care which brand makes it, only if it tastes good! Didn't Kellogg's have to address this directly with their "we don't make cereals for anyone else" advertising slogan.

Well, I get that's it's friendly and well meaning so I hope my reply is received the same. This is quite simply not a fact. This is what concerns me about these top down decisions made by who have quite simply lost touch with the 'troops on the ground'. All they seem to see is the headline 'Windows 10 EOL' not sure if they actually believe the hype or have gone to the 'Dark Side' and succumbed to the *shiny shiny* syndrome. I'm also cynical enough to see that once they've spent the equivalent of 2 or 3 times my wage on replacing and updating everything, moving to the cloud and got central management portals for everything, my presence as an onsite tech will become unnecessary... Either way, if they push new network switches and Windows 11 as a Trust requirement, every piece of hardware will need to be replaced and all current software, ways of working, licensing, policies etc. will need completely changing. Hope they send a team to help as well as the money!

Funny actually, we are in the early stages of MAT 'assimilation' and had a visit from their 'Head of IT Services'... I duly took them on the tour of our IT infrastructure (which admittedly took all of 5 minutes), our ancient IT suite computers and our equally old network switches. They mentioned that they were in the process of ripping out old network stacks in the schools that have joined and replacing them (with in my opinion, inferior kit) and then the killer question... Windows 11... I'm split really... On the one hand I agree with @KK20 the kit is fairly solid and does exactly what we need it to, why do we have to spend many, many £1000s just to enable the change to something we don't need...? On the other hand I get that as @FN-GM says, there are security issues with the old firmware and it's all out of warranty, so no updates, hard to get parts/replacements etc. I guess that seals the deal really as that should be a priority... I also know it should have had an IT hardware rolling replacement budget costing/ringfence, but apparently we don't get to do that currently. There isn't enough in the IT budget to even replace one suite of computers and we don't get to hold it over to next year. Maybe we could have replaced a few at a time, but even if we had done that the first ones would have been out of date by the time we purchased the last ones. Lets hope the MAT bring some money with them, as there isn't a single piece of kit here that doesn't need replacing!

I think Amazon Fire Tablets run Fire OS which is a fork of Android, so iOS apps won't work of course. Maybe someone will know if you can get them 'managed' with Google Workspace?

Probably being really slow on the uptake here... but did you disable the app auto update setting for some reason? I thought it defaulted to on?

Not Smoothwall related so apologies, but it's an issue for most (all?) filtering systems that categorise websites. We have a system that's built on Netsweeper and regularly get 'Adult' content alerts. We have HTTPS/SSL inspection so I can see the link and it is always something ridiculous like 'funny_cat.jpg' unfortunately the image is linked from a website like 'shutterstock' or 'deviantart' so the image itself may not be 'adult' but the websites host adult images and so are 'correctly' classified as such. I may be accused of 'overblocking' but I've denied both of those websites and cut the alerts by half overnight (luckily our little ones aren't going to lose out by not being able to access those sites).

Unfortunately the lesson they were doing was from some planning from our ICT consultant on creating videos , part of the computing curriculum apparently. That's good to know thanks.

OK, so a bit more info... The child created a video on a school iPad, saved it to their school Google drive, accessed it at home on their phone, saved it to their phone and then sent it to their friend via Whatsapp... The teacher is having a meltdown about safeguarding and going to the head, so it will roll back downhill and land on my desk at some point soon... Just to be clear, I can't stop it happening?

I got a bit more, but it's 3rd hand from the pupil and then from the teacher, so who knows what the reality is, some of this may not be correct. Apparently they accessed the video at home saved it to their phone and then emailed it to someone (possibly another child in the class). I think I have sharing externally disabled for pupils, so in Apps > Google Workspace > Settings for Drive and Docs > Sharing settings? I'm sure they don't have GMail enabled so personal email from phone?

TL;DR iPad > iMovie > saved to Google Drive > viewed at home > possibly shared... Free Educational Google Workspace version. How do I stop it? A teacher has just come to me and said one of the pupils took a video on an iPad in iMovie, saved it to their Google Drive and was then able to watch it at home and share it. Got to say I'm far from comfortable with Google Workspace, it was thrown at me to get sorted over Covid with no warning and no training, it's not something we use very much and it's not something that's a core part of our curriculum use so it's not part of our culture. Is the problem the iPad or Google? Or ($deity forbid).... classroom management...? Do I need to pay for Google and get conditional access and limit it to school I.P. ? If so how do you manage the pupils doing homework? Do I try and find some way to stop them signing into Google on the iPads? If so how do you manage access to Classroom when they want to use it in lessons. I've always disliked iPads in the classroom as no teacher can watch 30 screens all the time, I've also brought up limiting Google Drive contents (even on here) and was told that you can't do it... and also why would I want to...? smh

I have just looked at our quarantine and noticed what I believe to be quite a few legitimate emails being blocked. Reasons are a few 'Spoofing and Authentication' but mainly 'Attachments' however I see the attachments are .png, .pdf, .jpg, .doc so they're not file types I'd normally be overly concerned about. I think I've got attachment rules turned on, so I guess it's doing it's job, but I only think I've possibly added .html so I don't know why GMail is being so sensitive...?

Yeah I've checked a few and as you say, obviously all the same speeds but I'm just not sure the Mbps we're quoted on the broadband checkers are going to cope, so trying to take streaming TV out of the equation (and they've got a Sky dish)... No, that's exactly what I'm asking thanks! The long(ish) version is... we are thinking of moving house and the property is in a fairly rural location. I noticed they have a (copper) line from a telegraph pole in the street (although quite a distance from any exchange) and also have a Sky satellite dish. My OH works from home and relies on a good internet connection for video conference calls and I'm slightly concerned that with the current shift towards streaming TV over the internet (plus we'd need multi-room TV) it won't cope and my life wouldn't be worth living if the OH's job is affected. From the broadband checker we could get 20-35 Mbps/4 - 7 Mbps, but this comes with the usual caveats - "Average speeds are based on the download speed available to at least 50% of customers with this product during peak time (8 to 10pm). Your actual speeds depend on factors like your connection type, area, time of day and distance from the telephone exchange." I mean I'm aware of other providers and other options for broadband like 5G routers, satellite broadband (Skylink), or just not watching TV or gaming while the OH is working... but I'd like to get it all wrapped up in one 'New Customer' deal account...

Teacher opens a Smart Notebook file (also happens when starting Smart from shortcut) it ask to sign in, teacher chooses Google, opens a browser, attempts to connect to a 127.0.0.1 location, browser can't connect to the page and Smart reports an error and cannot sign-in. I think I had a similar problem on a laptop a while ago when we moved from Ver. 11 and I'm sure I knew the answer to this once, but can't remember as I haven't had to deal with it for years... **UPDATE** Apologies... I made a mistake and put Smart 22 in my original post as I hadn't actually seen the laptop and was just going by what the teacher had told me... When I got hold of the laptop I worked out that it was somehow still on 19 (free) and I can only guess that Smart have maybe somehow stopped this connecting and allowing the user to sign in (we use Google)...? So, I installed 22 (free) which is what all the other teacher laptops are on and that seemed to work OK. Sorry I can't help if you are getting this error and you are on 22...

Out of the blue I've been asked to look at this... Apparently someone has had the bright idea of using Flip (Flipgrid) in the planning of a computing curriculum lesson, however they've got no idea how to set it up, no idea how to use and no idea how to get it working with Google Classroom... so it lands on my desk! The only problem is I haven't got a clue either... So far I've found the app in Google Workspace > Security > Access and Data Control > API Controls > Manage Third-Party App Access - added the app and configured access. However, once signed in to Flip, creating a group, clicking 'Share' and then trying to add members through Google Classroom just reports 'No Classrooms Found'... What am I missing?

Actually you might also wonder why certain MIS suppliers are allowed to continually post threads which are nothing more than advertisements in a technical forum...
