    SIMS Patches

Unfortunately I can't really remember if I've ever had to deploy a patch to an individual target so could be wrong but.... In SOLUS > Upgrades > Update Library > Updates, choose the patch and click 'Deploy'. On the Deployment page select the 'Target' you want to deploy to and click 'Deploy now'.
  2. We have a couple of legacy ink-jets in a few offices, only used by the person in that office. They weren't the cheap 'ink cartridges cost more than the printer' types you get now, these are more the fax/scan/copy MFD capable of A3 printing etc. To be fair they don't actually get much use (which is fatal for an ink-jet) but I have one user that is constantly complaining about the print quality. I've done so many head cleans I've almost used up all the ink cartridges (I've always insisted on brand cartridges - so not cheap) and there's been little improvement, so I need a better option (other than throw it away and buy a laser). I'm tempted to drip some isopropyl-alcohol on the ink inlets, or maybe the jets but don't really want to have to take the thing apart... any better ideas?
  3. Not sure exactly which forum to start this thread in, but posting here in case it's Windows 11 related... I got called to the hall yesterday after school because we had a LEA Music Service person in who couldn't get their laptop hooked up to the projector. I would put a after that statement, but this was a bit strange because they come regularly (twice a week) in fact they were here on Wednesday and it worked fine. No changes made to our set-up (which I admit is a bit primitive), but it's set up so it's very easy for most people to just plug in and go. Anyway, get called to hall everybody is there and all eyes on me (a feeling I'm sure you all know well), so I start with the basics.... Windows + P appeared I could select the options, but nothing actually changed, unplug HDMI > VGA adaptor and replug.... nothing appeared on the projector. Although this did show 'something' was happening, it could just be jack/port sensing, so I dug further in to the Windows display settings and the Intel graphics 'Command Centre'... The projector was being recognised correctly as a second display (it even recognised it was an Epson projector), unplugging it removed all 'multiple display' options and re-plugging it brought them back. but I could not select duplicate or extend the Windows settings and save it as it always reverted the settings. In the Intel settings I could select the second display, but it would not 'enable' for some reason... Unfortunately most of my research brings up second displays not being detected, but this was, or to just click 'enable' but it just would not 'enable' it. Tried a different HDMI > VGA adaptor but no go (have to admit that is a new one on me, I've never had to 'enable' a second display before)! It's also sent through a splitter so it can be switched to a computer set-up, so I can understand comments on try with (or without) this or that... but what I'm trying to understand is that the same person, with the exact same set-up (laptop, HDMI > VGA, splitter, projector) worked fine on Wednesday... I tested the computer set-up and it worked fine, so ruling out everything up to the HDMI > VGA splitter and will try one of our laptops this morning to rule that out and place the blame squarely on the person's laptop and maybe a Windows 11 driver (which I can't do anything about) or setting that I don't know. EDIT: Just to update, it works fine with one of our laptops using the same set-up.
  4. Also this... https://www.ford.co.uk/content/dam/guxeu/uk/owners/resources-support/sync-support/update/SYNC_3_USB-Update-Guide.pdf
  5. Don't know if this helps, but: "SYNC updates - SYNC 3 and previous versions of SYNC Wi-Fi (SYNC 3 required) You can drive and use SYNC during the update. Flash drive (SYNC 3 and previous versions of SYNC) Your vehicle must be in park when you initiate the SYNC update installation process. Make sure your vehicle is in a well-ventilated area as your vehicle must remain running until the update is complete. Once the download process starts, you may drive your vehicle. ." https://www.ford.com/support/how-tos/sync/sync-updates/can-i-drive-while-sync-is-updating/#:~:text=Your%20vehicle%20must%20be%20in,you%20may%20drive%20your%20vehicle. IIRC when I did my KIA a couple of years ago I left it running.
  6. Could be, although the UPC ones don't appear in the 'compatible' list of drivers to install...
  7. Interesting... now I do seem to remember originally having the APC drivers and not seeing the battery icon! Now I have this in Device Manager (using generic Microsoft drivers), which I stuck with because I thought at the time having the battery icon was a good thing... Anyway, I've tried the 'Scheduled Task' twice now at 13:25 and 13:30 with 'Start the task only on AC power' ticked and it hasn't run... just tried it at 13:35 with it unticked and it ran successfully!! Now even stranger is one of the VMs (Windows 10) is showing a battery icon, the other VM (Server 2019) isn't... this makes it weird because that's the VM this task is trying to start (although I don't think it's related). Edit: I might try uninstalling the battery device tonight and getting the APC drivers back on (I have the exact same set-up on another host and it doesn't seem to be having these problems - although it isn't doing the same sort of task).
  8. Hmmmm... maybe it was a bit of a knee-jerk reaction... only it has all the battery settings and status you'd normally see on a laptop etc. Which I guess you'd probably expect if it was 'aware' that it had a battery... but I'm not sure now if I can honestly say it 100% thinks it's 'On Battery'. Also I'd tried all the settings for the Scheduled Tasks and it was only after unticking 'Only run only on AC power' that they actually ran! Do you have a battery icon at all in the Taskbar? I think it may be because the UPS (APC) is USB connected and the PowerChute software for management is installed. There's definitely 'UPS Battery' showing in 'Device Manager'. Edit: No I can't guarantee nobody has unplugged anything, but it is highly unlikely...
  9. I've just come across a strange issue I haven't seen before and wondered if the Edugeek hive mind knows about it... I've just noticed one of the servers is failing a few scheduled tasks and I couldn't find any reason for it, no Event Viewer entries, no history, it wasn't even really failing, it just wasn't starting at all... Also if this is actually a 'thing' and if I can stop it. I mean it was a problem for me so I'm interested to know if anyone has seen it before so I can say for sure what is happening... Background: We have our physical host servers on dual PSUs, one running from the wall socket and one from a UPS. Unfortunately I don't remember if this has always been the case as I've only just noticed it whilst looking in to this problem... but the servers seem to believe they are running on 'battery' which I guess is technically true if they are using the PSU plugged in to the UPS... I'll also have to dig into whether or not this has any kind of impact on performance (like it does on laptops, possibly scaling down the CPU, screen brightness, fans speed etc.) unless anyone knows? However, I'm not really sure what has happened lately as previously scheduled tasks have been running OK. The last time this particular task ran was 08:00 Monday 08/04/2024 then it just stopped running. I just can't think what has changed, especially considering I was on holiday that week! There is another one that also stopped running on the Friday before (05/04/2024) but it's only a Monday to Friday task so that makes sense if whatever happened after 08:00 on the following Monday... Anyway, the only thing that connects all the Scheduled Tasks that stopped working is that they have 'Power - Start the task only if the computer is on AC power' ticked... So, I get why they wouldn't start if the server thinks it's on battery... what I don't get is why it has suddenly started taking notice of this and what has changed?
  10. A bit more research seems to make it sound even worse... "Is there any migration process for moving data from Microsoft Teams Free (classic) to Microsoft Teams (free)? There’s no automated process to move any content or data from Microsoft Teams Free (classic) to Microsoft Teams (free). You will need to manually create chats and meetings, and communities to replace teams." How do I preserve my files? You have until April 12, 2023 to view and export your files. After that date, you’ll lose access to Microsoft Teams Free (classic) and your data will be deleted. However, we're March 16, 2024 and still using it... Version is 1.7.00.8753 which I can't find any reference to!
  11. OK, well behind the curve here (as always) and need someone to explain what all the fuss is about... We don't use Teams here as a general rule, I've only ever installed it for about 2 people and used the Teams machine installer (Teams_Windows_x64.msi). I've never included it in our Office deployments (currently LTSC 2021), we don't use any of those new fangled O365 web apps, just proper hardcore on the machine software. But... I've just had one of our student teachers that I installed it for (who does all her Uni work and Tutor meetings on Teams) say a message popped up saying something like 'Teams is going to stop working soon, switch to the new version'... They are nervous as all their work is going to disappear and to be honest, so am I. Especially when I read things like... "As the legacy and new version of Teams (free) are separate from each other, you'll need to manually recreate one-to-one and group chats from Microsoft Teams Free (classic)." and "In the new Microsoft Teams (free) app, you'll no longer see teams and channels. Instead, these have been replaced with a simplified communities experience that allows people to collaborate in threaded conversations" and The new Microsoft Teams (free) app lets you chat, schedule meetings, and so much more. Some features require a Microsoft subscription to unlock even more capabilities and remove limits. and "Files - If you used teams and channels in the legacy Teams (free) app to store files, you'll be able to use communities in the new Teams (free) app in much the same way. To get started, create a new community and then upload your files to the community. Files uploaded to a community will be stored in OneDrive. To add to the confusion we don't use OneDrive and don't have it installed... We do have a Microsoft Tenant and there is a possibility for me to add this user to it (they all have free A1 plus licenses but I hear they will also expire soon), but this is obviously not the account they are currently using, so it will be even more confusing. I have no experience with any of it to help guide them through it and to be honest I have no idea what I'm supposed to do.
  12. There was also a forum for it! /forums/learning-network-manager/index33.html Seems to have morphed into something else now and is a general place for people learning how to 'manage a network'...
  13. There's a few settings in SOLUS that might need tweaking (like show all updates tickbox in 'Update Library). Also make sure you've manually checked for updates if the scheduled check hasn't run yet (although ours is every hour), have 'Auto download' ticked (be aware of this taking up space with updates you don't need though) and maybe change the dropdown to 'the beginning'. Edit: Just looked on ours and once 'Show all updates' was ticked I found the patch... we had it released to us in 2017 lol! But I was still able to download it and deploy...
  14. So, it appears they are very touchy about anyone installing Net2 and messing with the database... and they've said there is no option to specify SQL on install... Now I'm wondering how I managed it then, as I have it running on a full SQL 2012 and not the SQL 2012 Express they are saying our version should be running on! The only option they're giving me is to install an updated version of Net2 which will install SQL 2017 Express for me... Great, I was trying to reduce the amount of SQL versions on the server and consolidate it, not add more.... I'd previously asked if I could SA into it and limit memory use and they flatly refused (something about being worried that their IP would be stolen).
  15. Well, this escalated quickly... After I added SQL server into my WSUS and all the updates appeared, the servers checked in one by one but none of them appeared to want the updates! In fact all the updates are showing that WSUS has checked and are now sitting with a status of Installed/Not Applicable for all the servers... Initially I thought that meant I was all up to date, but a bit more research on patch levels for SQL showed I wasn't and now I come across this piece of information! It appears my SQL is on a GDR (General Distribution Release) branch. Therefore it isn't on a CU branch and won't look for other CUs until I manually patch it with a CU first... as it has had the latest GDR only update (currently sitting at 15.0.2104.1) "Cumulative Updates: The MU detection logic now allows clean instances that are at the baseline (RTM or SP, with no servicing updates) or that are already updated along the CU branch to receive the update. A CU update does not have to be installed for an instance to be offered the update. However, if the instance has a GDR update, the instance must still be manually updated outside MU to become manageable through MU (WSUS) automation." "For SQL Server 2019, the RTM baseline can be either the RTM (15.0.2000.5) version baseline or the RTM + RTM GDR (15.0.2070.41) version baseline. Either version will work for this release". https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/sql/releases/new-mu-servicing-model
  16. I thought I'd look at this again over the Easter holiday, unfortunately looking at the install video it appears the 'original' Lexmark 500 GB sata hard drive comes as a kit with stand-off and dual power/data cable. I don't want to bodge it, so probably not worth the effort. https://infoserve.lexmark.com/ids/idv/video.aspx?category=Color+Printers&productCode=Lexmark_C4342&topic=v54445160&vId=CS730_CS735_CX730_CX735%2flexmark-installing-printer-hard-disk-video&ar=16%3a9&ap=1&l1=1&l2=4&sh=863&sw=1280&loc=en_XM
  17. I'm really struggling with this as I just can't see a way to do it natively through the Net2 software... We have Paxton Net2 installed on a server running SQL server 2012 which was installed a long time ago and needs to be uninstalled (obviously). On the same server we have SQL 2016 which was put in for Veeam when that was installed. What I can't seem to get my head around is getting the Paxton Net2 database to run in SQL 2016 instead of SQL 2012. Even if I could work out a way to get the database moved (Studio or Net2 backup/import) I can't see anywhere in the software (Net2 Configuration Utility) that actually states where the database is currently or any way to point it somewhere else... You know like in Veeam there is the option to rename/alter where it looks for the database in the configuration options. Should I be looking at it in more of a 'server move' way..? Backup database > uninstall Net2 > reinstall Net2 (hopefully with a choice of SQL) > choose SQL 2016 > restore database...
  18. Well I did a thing on my WSUS server on Friday (saw that I could check for SQL updates)... For some reason I have (to my shame) never really taken any notice of SQL (other than knowing it had to be installed for SIMS etc.). Anyway, I've come in this morning to 33 updates waiting for approval! Due to having always been on WSUS (and never having the SQL 'Product' ticked) it's never been something that's pinged up on my radar (or even crossed my mind). So, out of the 33 updates awaiting approval, which do I approve? Is it OK (as with Windows updates) just to approve the latest CU (as that should have all previous updates in) and security patch? Also, I've always heard SQL is a bit of a nightmare when it goes wrong (probably why I've never messed with updating it, but I'm hoping it's improved over the years) so any 'gotchas' or other advice, apart from having a good backup... EDIT: Alternatively 'Approve' them all and let '$deity' sort them out?
  19. @fiza EDIT: The redacted part is our Google domain where our email accounts are.
  20. Not sure if your suggestion gets around this, but I think we eventually came to the conclusion that on the LGfL side of things 'port 25' (which iirc FSRM uses) cannot be sent out of the larger LGfL network, so if you're using the LGfL connection it's never going to get anywhere. Their mail relay seems to accept it though, so it just seemed easier at the time to use it. As long as your DNS SPF for the Google domain includes the LGfL servers as sending domains I think.
  21. Hmmmmmm.... can't even really remember why I was trying to do it any differently now! I've also migrated the shares onto a VM, so FSRM went with it obviously. I asked LGfL to add the new server IP into the mail relay and it worked, so I'm going to say 'yes' for that part. Think I had too much on (as usual) to stick with trying to bypass the LGfL mail relay and do it all via Google. Just checked and have a DNS entry with our Domain Registrar on our Google domain for LGfL. Feel free to PM for details.
  22. Well, finally got round to pulling the trigger on this... what a mistake! I thought I'd wait until after 9 a.m. to minimise disruption, finished up the data cleansing to make sure everybody was where they should be and had all the correct attributes set, then deleted all the users in Paxton and waited for 'THE SYNC' from EntrySign... It didn't happen and less than 5 minutes later, first call came in 'We can't open the doors!' Eventually got it to sync (apart from a couple of unique cases) and breathed a sigh of relief... 10 minutes later came another message 'We still can't open the doors!' 2 hours later and after an EntrySign support call and a Paxton database restore, I can finally sit down and have a cup of coffee! It turns out EntrySign can't read our Paxton cards (well it can read the card, but gives it a different 'token number' to what Paxton thinks it is)! So, we have disabled the user sync and will have to manage them as two individual systems. What a complete waste of a morning that was....
  23. From the screenshots below I am going to presume that: The fob in Paxton (ending in 874) relates to the first token in EntrySign (ending in 728) and this was originally working OK. The card was introduced later and somehow created the new Paxton entry (ending in 324) relating to the second token in EntrySign (ending in 449).... why?! Therefore I can delete the whole user in the first (top left) screenshot and the first token entry (728) in EntrySign. But in the second (top right) screenshot (which is the EntrySign user created in Paxton) what are the key symbols for?
  24. We have a couple of class sets of iPad 8th generation (MYL92B/A), but they are on Version iPadOS 17.3.1. They never update when sent the command from Meraki, they also have the Auto-Update toggled on in the settings, but very rarely actually do (I usually have to go round each half-term and manually initiate the update - we even have a Mac-Mini acting as a caching server). At least try one manual check for updates and let that install. When you say 'Dual-managed with Apple School Manager and Meraki' you just mean they exist in ASM and that's where you purchase apps etc. There's no actual iPad management done from there? Or do you use some sort of shared iPad structure. AFAIK this will split the iPad storage into small partitions that might mean there isn't much room left for video (depending on the quality settings)...
  25. Sorry to necro this old thread, but interested in the interaction between EntrySign and Paxton... We had Paxton for door entry for a while and more recently it was decided to modernise with EntrySign. There are $reasons why things have ended up the way they have, but the decision to get EntrySign was made at SLT level and its administration is managed by the BM (I was involved purely to provide a network port, install the software on the admin computers and the server). We still have Paxton readers at all doors as the EntrySign terminal is only for Reception/Main Entry Door. Anyway, it ended up working OK front of house, the EntrySign terminal tells Paxton to open the Main Door and Paxton terminals at the other doors function as they always have. But it's behind the scenes that concerns me... Somehow (not sure if it's by design) EntrySign has written users to the Paxton database. Most staff now have two Paxton entries (original Paxton and new EntrySign ones) and some cards work on EntrySign and Paxton, but some only work on EntrySign (meaning they can't open any other doors, only the Main Door). There are also entries in the Paxton database for 'guests' and other random visitors (who have only signed in to EntrySign)... I thought I'd be helpful, tidy things up and try to address these issues, but I've fallen at the first hurdle due to what I've now found is the difference in the way the card/token number is stored/presented in either application... Say I have 1 original user John SMITH created in a 'Teacher' User Group in Paxton, it appears when EntrySign was introduced it created another user in Paxton called JOHN, Smith (but not in any User Group). Now John's original Paxton fob works in both Paxton and EntrySign, but the fob was taken back and a Card was issued. However the Card doesn't work with the Paxton readers only on the EntrySign terminal.... Looking at the 2 entries now in Paxton and the 1 entry in EntrySign, although I can kind of tell which is the EntrySign inserted account in Paxton, none of the token numbers match each other and I'm not sure of the ramifications of deleting either account in Paxton (or if EntrySign will just recreate it)... Paxton John SMITH - 123456 JOHN Smith - 456789 EntrySign JOHN Smith - 489523106 Plus, randomly some tokens in Paxton have a key symbol, some have a fob symbol and some have a card!
