£519 for Asus Maximus RangerVII, 16GB DDR3, 4790K £693 for Asus X99-A (cheapest Asus X99 board) 16GB DDR4, 5820K Thats a big difference that could be spent on an SSD or into the GFX card. All a bit of a moot point as she wants a rig for lan and ITX is perfect for that which currently there are no X99 ITX boards that I can find.

DDR4 Ram is insanely expensive at the moment, so not worth it! As Norphy says at the moment only the Haswell-E chips support DDR4. Its unlikely that there will be any Haswells that support it, that may come with Broardwell or Skylake / 14nm stuff. Games arent taking advantage of multple cores as much as raw speed so a 4 core 4GHz 4790k will be a lot faster than a 6 core 3.3GHz 5820K so the 4790K is a much better processor for gaming, not to mention the overall amount you save on motherboard, RAM and CPU.

I did school one of their techies at i49 who was struggling to use a cable tester. xD He was trying to plug an RJ-45 into an RJ-11 tester I kid you not! I did think of volunteering to help on the tech support side but I wouldn't be able to play in the leagues too.

Failing that you could maybe ask a company if you could trial some.

That Acer looks pretty good. Although not sure I'd wanna take a 27" monitor to LAN it gets tight with 24" monitors, although I have seen people using 32" TV's

No tearing yet and I'm 1500 hours into it. My samsung 21" 60Hz was bad unless I used V-Sync. Just my real world experience anyway. Yeah with 120Hz and V-Sync enabled I'd get 120FPS with 60Hz V-Sync you'd be getting 60FPS which again isn't great imho. I think graphics settings are pretty much like which RAID array to use.

I definitely think so. For me 60FPS just doesn't cut the mustard. I play primarily first person shooters (CS:GO) so having as many frames as possible means the difference between kill or be killed. I also hate screen tearing which can occur with lower refresh rates. CS:GO runs at around 300FPS and Evolve runs at 120FPS (no V-Sync) Very similar system to mine. 4790k @ 4.6GHz 16GB ram, 512GB SSD and another 512GB SSD just for steam x2 GTX 970's in SLI. 24" BenQ 120Hz monitor.

4k is a long way off being suitable for gaming until they bring out 120Hz monitors 60Hz would make my eyes bleed. The only 1440p monitor worth considering for a gamer is the Asus ROG Swift which will run you £600+. My friend runs that monitor with x2 780 Ti's in SLI and just about gets over 100FPS in high end games but he is CPU limited by only having the 2500K (4.4Ghz). For running high resolutions such as 1440p a single 980 would maybe be the way to go, however x2 970's in SLI would be very good value for money but the 3.5GB issue might be a limiting factor on very high detail at 1440p later on in life, currently it'll be fine. 4790K would be an excellent processor especially as its so easy to overclock it. 16GB ram is fine. I'd go for 1TB SSD OS/Steam/Games drive and a large capacity mechanical drive for steam backups. For £1500 you will struggle to get a decent 1440p setup. I'd seriously consider 1080p its still got plenty of life in it.

I've got users coming to me saying that their documents (office) are turning into .tmp files. I think it may have something to do with them being logged into multiple pc's at once. The files are stored on the server. Renaming the document to .docx doesn't work. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Server is 2003 R2 and desktops are Win7 Enterprise Office 2010.

I hate to say it but this will be YouTube Edu all over again, setup and then forgotten about and not maintained by Google.

I agree their configs are very static and there is no CLI but for the majority of installations that will be enough, plus they are constantly updating the FW. My example was that even a non technical person could setup a site to site VPN with a few clicks instead of typing 50 lines of code. The example above is actually a non-standard VPN setup anyway.

Sooo many vendors out there doing what you want. Maybe your budget will reflect your choices. Contact one of your suppliers and see if they can recommend anything.

Having the HTTPS inspection warning on can actually cause problems as I found out. A teacher was trying to launch a YouTube URL from a Word document without launching Internet Explorer first, so youtube (https) loaded up broken. The solution was to open Internet Explorer first and accept the warning message then load the YouTube URL from the Word document, YouTube would then display correctly.

We use their APs and I Would love a fully Meraki network and its just the costs of the firewall products that stop me doing it. The ongoing costs are a concern but as you say the benefit could outweigh that. Being able to manage our 3 networks from a single pane of glass would be a massive timesaver. I think for me because switches are pretty much set and forget there isn't much that needs to be changed then the cost isn't worth it, however their firewall would be.

Do you need to create a route entry for the 192 range to the 10 range? I'm still learning about vlans and routing myself so I'm probably not much help. A static route of 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.10.1 (or whatever your internet gateway IP is) would route all traffic to the internet maybe that is what you are after?

Are you using smoothwalls BYOD feature? If so you can use that to restrict security groups.

I've not used Aerohive but we did trial Ruckus and Meraki and went with Meraki in the end and I'm so glad I did. Its perfect if you have multiple sites to manage like I do. The single pane of glass management is so easy and everything is quick and easy to find. The signal is great and the hand off when roaming between APs is seamless. The language Meraki uses to describe what things do is very simple and easy to understand even a non technical person could configure and manage it. If money wasn't an issue I'd love to have an entire meraki network, i.e. switches and firewalls too.
