ABTutor is used here too, but only for managing students and only in a couple of rooms. We have a pretty neat system now where we can see which PC's are in a room on our site maps. Then we can click on an individual PC and retreive details from SCCM, start a remote desktop/assitance and various other functions. Besides, wouldn't we have to pay for extra licences with AB Tutor?

Just wondering... Is it possible to customize what will be displayed on the remote PC's screen? It would be great if we could display a custom message/image such as: "IT at work! Please phone #### for more information" - perhaps stop people from turning off a PC while I'm working on it...

An "Ink Layer" should become active when you pick up a pen - you should see a border appear around the "screen" with a red X to close it in the top right. If not, then your drivers are probably not installed properly... Or the Smart Tools aren't running (though usually installer places this in Startup folder).

I quite liked Adobe Premier Elements (should only set you back around £40) - been a while since I used though and I never created DVD's with it. At home I have Pinnacle Studio 14, which is OK when you get used to the interface and also set me back around £40. Also allows you to create a DVD, but creating a menu was a little fiddly to begin with - some tutorials online helped. Because I bought a budget version, it would only allow me one menu screen though. Someone has changed the language of a Saville ES-1200 projector to Chinese This projector is an odd one out, as most of our others are Hitachi or Smart. Haven't got a manual and can't find anything online about it. Anyone know how to reset it and/or change the language?

I Googled perl ping and got this: Net::Ping - perldoc.perl.org The example script shows how to use it. Then, to launch a script if there's no ping, try: exec - perldoc.perl.org Then you could cron your "pinging" script to run it every minute, hour, day, specific time etc...

Hmmm... well, appears it was an IE problem. I tried the setup page in Firefox and it worked. When I tried logging on to the admin section, IE wouldn't let me, but it did after a restart. Oh well.

Trying to test Liberum, had a bit of a palava installing IIS, but it appears to be running fine now. Reached the stage in the Liberum instructions where I have to "Install/Upgrade Language Strings", but I press the button and nothing appears to be happening. If I try to click the "Logon" link, it says language strings are missing. I'm using the Access database, have checked "settings.asp" and paths are correct. So are permissions I think (IUSR_MACHINENAME has MODIFY rights). BTW, I'm an IIS noob.

Well, just got back to this problem. I did a little more testing (last time I was on my way off the site and only had a quick poke at it in passing), and found that it didn't beep while booting in safe mode, but started again once it reached the log-in screen. This time though the beeping stopped after removing the keyboard so I tested with another one and it didn't beep again! You'd think that the beeps would've stopped after unplugging the keyboard in normal mode...

This should work: If FirstCharacter >= "1" And FirstCharacter <= "9" Then StrType = "student" Else StrType = "staff" End If Here's a couple of sites that have helped me: VBScript Tutorial Script Center And you might want to check this script editor out: VbsEdit - Award-winning VBScript Editor - VBS editor - VBScript debugger - VBS debugger It has some nag screens, but the trial period never runs out.

This should get you the first character. FirstCharacter = Left(strLUsername, 1) Left Function

Spooler service could be affected by the printer driver - I've had problems in the past with some HP PCL drivers, but fine with the PS equivalent. I've had to use older drivers in same cases too. Also, by default, I think services are set to twice restart after 1 minute, but subsequent failures are set to "Take No Action", which resets after 1 day.

Once had a lot of Samsung CRT monitors go Bang! when you turned them on. Happened to me once - an almighty crack as I turned it on - if there is a record for a backwards jump, I broke it that day Also, a few years ago, switched on a PC, only to hear a pop and then a see a large puff of toxic smoke come out the back. I've also had a user working on their PC, when the disc in their CD drive shattered and exploded out past their face

Had a Dell laptop break down a couple of months ago. After an hour or so with their online chat service, and still no luck getting it to work, they said they'd send an engineer around next day. Sure enough, he was here around 10am, brought his own tools and anti-static mat/bracelet combi, and in less than 30 mins, had replaced the motherboard and tested the laptop. Also, practically every major hard drive manufacturer has diagnostic software for download, but they don't. I had an old Dell laptop to fix the other day - something wrong with HDD filesystem. Thought I'd remove it and plug it into my USB adapter, but no, it was a Toshiba with a strange interface. Anyway, the partitions had "disappeared" somehow, but after some fiddling with Recovery Console, TestDisk and GParted, I got it working again.

GCZ I believe. Generally no trouble at all for us...

Nope. It's just a generic Intel D945 mobo-based unit from Stone.

Hmm, check PSU then. Funny why it stops when I log-in. It shouldn't be under a heavy load either as it's just a bog-standard PC - same as the other 14 PC's in the room....

I have a PC that beeps like a nutter (not in a discernable pattern) during startup and then stops when you log-in. If you shutdown, beeping resumes until it turns off. I unplugged keyboard and mouse - didn't stop. Got me scratching my head... I know I could unplug speaker, but it wasn't doing this before Xmas.

Story wasn't anything new (and in some places, very dumb), some have said it could have been called "Dances with Na'vi". Sci-fi ideas were obviously ripped from various sources. Liked the look of the film though, but didn't think the 3D did anything for it. The RealD tech was only used for a subtle effect, and most of the time I couldn't tell the difference between 2D and 3D where this film was concerned. I'll still buy the blu-ray though. Motion capture of limb movement has been around for years now, but facial capture is relatively new. Saw a demonstration a while back of a system that rendered using the Unreal Engine. It could apply facial movements in real-time to a character model, but after post processing, result was even more awesome. The problem still exists though that the human brain isn't fooled by a CG human face - I read somewhere that it needs to be at least 99% accurate to fool us. Also, if it's between something like 80-99% accurate, it just looks creepy/wierd. I think most of the $500 million reputedly spent on the film went on the details, not on the actual tech, and the fact that rendering in 1080p (possibly higher for future-proofing) took more time and money than previous CGI films. As for Fern Gully... I still find myself saying "Gravity works!" sometimes

There's also the old adage: If it sounds too good to be true.... Besides, toner is a powder, can it be 7 times thicker? Saying 7 times more yield would make more sense. Anyone elses BS senses tingling?
