I havn't had much chance to sort this or play with windows 7 policys even yet, around 80% of our network will still be XP computers anyway, of which many will be renewed next summer hopefully, we also plan to upgrade our server as its outdated to say the least, about 6years old now without any upgrades so ill be downgrading our win7 machines for now and they will be upgraded site wide hopefully early next year on an 08 domain

All of our profiles are in the same share area \\server\profiles$

Might just do this tbf, I've taken over from a previous technician and never had much to do with profiles until now as its all worked! Doesn't appear to be much there beside about 5mb of App data on any of the profiles, desktop icons and start menus are all done with redirection. Some profiles have NTUSER.man and NTUSER.dat files in some along with around 6 profiles of various names which dont appear to be in use, could I get away with just deleting all of these profiles or would I see numerous errors

Our profiles are set in a profile share then in folders for groups, 1 profile per group e.g. \students \staff \tech \admin. Having managed to get some of each group to log in on a windows 7 machine now and the logon populating a .v2 folder for each some users from all groups are now able to logon but not others!

Ok it looks like the the profiles and their paths are causing the issue I just tryed changing the test account profile to \server\profiles$\technicians.v2 in AD and logged on fine. What is this %osver% your speak of oh wise one

No luck The $ is used to hide a share and shouldn't make any difference, the working accounts are also using a share$ Just trying this *waits while it applys to all student folders* I'll give it a go thanks!

Both the share permissions and folder permissions are full for users required, the staffs profile and homepath areas both allow all staff group members full control, the same goes for students. System and domain administrators also have full control on all these folders.

Even when I create new accounts I have the same problem, ill give this a try tho thanks!

The message "The user profiel service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded" for almost all users, I have a couple of accounts it appears to work on including my technician account a student account and a teacher account. We are using roaming profiles in a mainly XP enviroment and server 2003. Profiles must work between the two OS's as staff will be using both daily. All folders have been directed using RSAT on the 7 client and I have read around for this problem but almost all search results were related to the deleting of c:\users... and having to tidy the registry. The event viewer shows 3 events: Warning- The winlogon notificaation subscriber failed a critical notification event. Error-Windows cannot locate the server copy of your roaming profile and is attempting to log you on with your local profile. Changes to the profile will not be copied to the server when you log off. This error may be caused by network problems or insufficient security rights. Details- Access is denied. Windows cannot log you on because your profile cannot be loaded. So obiously for some reason it cannot find the roaming profile on the server, gives up looking and attempts to load a none existant local profile. What is puzzling me is why can't it find this profile? I can log on with my staff group logon fine, setup in the exact same way as all staff accounts with its profile and homepath in the exact same shared location and the same mapped drives setup in RSAT. This is really bugging me now coming up to the end of term I was planning to build a 7 image and deploy it to our new workstations during the holidays but its not looking good!

Roaming profiles

thanks for the advice but I would like to find out why it keeps changing, when the user logs on the resolution is fine at first, they have a few seconds where the resolution is fine then it changes just after the desktop has displayed! I've just tryed moving a test student account into a user group which has the ability to change settings, logged in and the resolution once again went back to 800x600 which I then changed to the correct resolution. The user is now back in their restricted student group and the resolution remains correct at 1366x768 but only for that student account. Shouldn't these profiles all be using the local settings as there is no GPO settings a resolution rather then being individual users local specified resolution? Update: Having restarted the computer the student test account has reset to 800x600

Last week I made new images for each of our computers that are still in use and I have already found a problem. When a domain user logs onto a laptop the resolution is put down to 800x600 but as the local administrator I have set the resolution to 1366x768. The laptops are running Intels graphics and media control panel which also says 1366x768. This only happens on our laptop images so the issue isn't GPO settings and these accounts are used on our previous image for these laptops.

Im trying to create a USB Network boot package to ghostcast a set of laptops, I have created and used network boot packages on our USB sticks hundreds of times for a number of computers but our laptops don't seem to like it! They all have Intel 82577lc NICS and I have added the 82577lc driver to the boot wizard when created, I have also tried universal drivers etc...... The laptop will boot the usb and stay on the ghost Dos screen for a couple of minutes before shutting down.

The account im testing is just using a standard background as I havnt set anything in GP for it yet. I have removed the run login scripts syncrosley and it appears to of speeded login a little, around 2-3mins now......still poor

All our printers are distributed using a logon script which I have removed for this test user rather then GP distribution ,something I was planning on changing this week but if its going to cause more agro I might leave it. Related to NIC issues I have just disabled IPv6 as some people say that causes an issue to load times.

From boot to logon screen there is no issue its pretty quick but when a user logs into the windows 7 machine im currently testing there is a huge load time. The event viewer does show up some issues but im not sure what they really point to! Having read simular topics I have set the DNS rather then leaving it automatic and disabled the logon scripts for my test user but still no luck.

Well the folder redirection is working fine between xp and 7 but im having some issues with stupidly long load times. Just finished doing this for a test OU which ive made some users in, ill test them properly on monday, been busy day tracking down software lists from each department and starting new images on the XP machines

I've started to go out on my bike rather then the gym, do around 8 miles each time sometimes a little more, its more then i'd do at the gym because i'm not simply looking at the same Music chart show day in day out in a boiling hot room with guys grunting on weights too heavy for them and im pretty sure ill benefit more doing this then at the gym on a stationary bike ride doing 4-5miles at a easier pase and a little jogging.

Using GPM on the win7 client really shows some of the useful policys and new features of GP on 2008 and Its far better I can see already, going to try pull forward are schedule of 2008 curric and admin upgrades (we are currently on central active directorys with the LEA who wont support higher then 2003) Playing with the folder redirection now but ive had GPM on this client crash 3-4 times now! Very annoying.

2 stone gain in 2 months is pretty high, how did you loose the 3 stone, was it gradual?

We plan to go 2008 R2 early next year although im trying to get this brought forward as it will save alot of hassle, im also tempted to downgrade the new stations to XP for the time being.I think I need to use client side GPMC on 7 to redirect rather then just the 2003 GPMC so I can try and have cross network compatability as users will be going between XP and 7 systems on the same profiles.

Thats what I thought but you only get local computer policy with nothing on redirection
