Hi, I know its an old thread, we're looking to replace our TMG box as well and the server HW is not bad. I'm looking at the sophos UTM - looks good in terms of features etc and they are improving all the while (latest version is 9.2 and you can download a 30 day trial to test it). Not sure yet how it is actually licensed but will be looking at this closely. One of the things it has is the web server protection (this replaces the functionality of reverse web publishing in TMG etc). The software is available as an appliance, virtual image or image you can install on your own HW so its flexible. Its best not to go for HW appliance based as you will be paying for support and the cost of advance HW replacement etc - virtual may be better but then again you have the HW already so its worth installing on that to see how it performs. Ash.

The server where i was trying to do this was IE9 so it should have worked but it seems to have saved so its working okay. the only thing its now comming up is a message after logging on the HAP is "forbidden". Click OK and it is usuable but not sure what is causing the issue. I am trying with my account as well as test etc. Any ideas on why this may be happening. Thanks, Ash.

Hi, Also i think with this idea of completely removing the tradition desktop PCs with BYOD devices and saving to cloud, what happens to controlled assessment, online exams etc where screens needs to be bigger and privacy etc. I can't see removing all desktop/laptops from schools. You will always need ceratin suite of desktops/laptops. Also on your admin side (administration users i.e. business managers, faculty assistance etc) will need desktops as they usually based at one particular point and so desktop device is a better fit. It is interesting a lof the talk of schools moving to cloud storage without defining a) what they want to get out 2) how to train up teachers to embrace this 3) contingency plans when internet (and cloud services) is not available (yes its got better in recent years but there is still a possibility of outage due to HW malfunction, provider having faults, cables damaged etc) I believe a lot of reserarch needs to be done by school(s) who are looking at this and understanding the true nature of moving to cloud so they don't get caught out. I am not suiggesting that they shouldn't do this but rather that they need to evaluate and discuss a lot of things before moving in this direction.

Hi, Too late for this year i guess but would it be possible to host the event somewhere central i.e. Birmingham or something so most people can make it as its central sort of area and rail, road and other connections are pretty good. Ash.

HI there, We're having similar issues, our server (server 2012 with MDT 2013) is a VM running on vmware 5.0 and the multicast is very slow. Is multicast not recommended on servers that are VM? Thanks, Ash.

Hiya, Not related to the OP issue, can i ask how you went about doing the in-place upgrade on your 2008 R2 servers? We're got 3 x DCs which are running 2008 R2 and the rest of the servers as well (all 2008 r2). I really don't want to create/migrate DCs and then rename this. I'm trying to get to a point where we can still call it the same names as before to minimize issues and our documentation. Thanks in advance, Ash.

Hi, I did look at that but it just doesn't answer the questions properly due to the lack of per computer installed. The problem comes when you have institution owned devices that are shared by students. If an app has been identified and need to be rolled out to tablets it should be easier for us IT administrators to send that out and be ready for the students to use the app rather than they have to install it etc. I think this really need to be addressed if we're use to fully use the metro touch screen apps in a major way. Ash.

Hi, could you let us know how you are doing this with the meraki MDM solution. Are you talking about the windows store apps? i thought these were per-user install as opposed to per computer install? Thanks in advance, Ash.

You may want to get the fortinet and the use the server 2012 R2 web application proxy service to do reverse publishing. Ash.

Hi Nick, Sorry for the very late reply, i'm still getting the error (WCF error). The event logs shows the following (from one of the errors listed). [windows tablet] Surface with Domain login
spc-rocket replied to Danp's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Hiya, Yes this does look good, the only thing missing is the back camera - would have been good if they chucked in a 8mp rear camera as well. The bay trail atom processor is very good and has a better chipset for graphics as well. Ash. -
RM - a company in crisis?
spc-rocket replied to Springbok's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Hiya, There are rumours of rm being taken over by systemax I.e misco as they are known in the uk http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2013/11/29/misco_to_buy_rm_sources/ Not sure how true it is -
Hi You may want to configure another GPO setting as stated in the below thread. Make sure you do this only on the laptops OU to avoid it being applied to other stations that are not exhibiting this behaviour. Slow Logon and Roaming Profile issues Set maximum wait time for the network if a user has a roaming user profile or remote home folder I would not set it to 0 because this means that on wireless on the school network it might have issues. I have set ours to be 6 seconds. HTH, Ash.

Software Developers who Supply APPX file to Education
spc-rocket replied to bcsdtech's topic in Windows 8
Hiya, Would you need to sign themwith your cert, i would have thought you can just sideload them normally after you obtained the appx files? As for the legality of the situation i guess you can buy the app multiple time and then roll it out this way. Its to make it easier for our users, we're not trying to make profit from this or do piracy. Ash. -
How are you handling Windows 8 Live IDs in schools?
spc-rocket replied to altonPM's topic in Windows 8
Hi, Can you deploy the store apps to all users i.e. a per computer install of the store app? If so could you share on how you go about this? Many thanks, Ash. -
Hello all, I haven't tried this so i'm not sure what the outcome is likely to be but just a suggestion. Can you not download the app on one PC/tablet and then take the appx files or files that are generated and resign these with the MS tool and deploy it out to stations using the provision apps powershell command? The certificate can be generated from your CA? Just a suggestion Ash.

Thanks, yes its foxed me as well, not sure where in the cache of avahi this is happening. Ash.

Hiya, @caffrey I'm doing similar with for the apple TVs and it works fine i.e. ipads can see the apple TV that are located other vlans, but sometimes there are duplicate entries or numbers next to each entry, i.e. C14, C14 (2) etc. Have check that all apple TV names are unique so i'm not sure if avahi is duplicating entries in cache? Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Ash.

Independent Competitive Tests - 2.4GHz & 5GHz 802.11n
spc-rocket replied to gsk's topic in Wireless Networks
Hello, Would i be right in saying that by having the 5Ghz exclusive you are limiting the signal strength anyway i.e. its not going to perform the same in terms of distance coverage with 802.11ac? i could missing something here but the way i would go about doing the upgrade to ac is to put the proven N kit in now and then slowly migrate to ac when its stabalised etc and more mainstream. This also means that its cheaper (per year anyway) because you can budget for the "upgrades" each year. The first devices that are going to be comming out for ac is the first generation anyway so you may want to wait until this becomes mainstream - 2 -3 years from now at least.
