Hiya, Does the redirection actually working? i.e. is their desktop pointing to the folder where you applied the permissions or is it pointing to their userprofile? I think you may find that the desktop redirection has not happend and its gone back to the default setting of the desktop being in the userprofile. You can check by looking at the registry of the user (i.e. when the user is logged in) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\Desktop and see where desktop points. You can also check this remotely by getting one the students to login and then from your station navigate to HKEY_USERS\\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\Desktop if the value of desktop is %userprofile%\desktop then its redirecting to their normal default desktop which they will have write access to and if its the other folder you specified then i'm not sure why its still letting them save stuff. Ash.

Its its one PC and one NIC then you need to make sure that the NIC is capable of support vlans, you'll need to tag all the vlans that you want to use on the switch and then at the PC end enable vlan tagging. Intel cards have pro set software that allows you to do this, not sure about others. Ash.

Hello All, We're testing windows 8 enterprise (32bit) on some tablets at the moment and one issue we keep getting is that the camera app doesn't like saving to the user's My pictures (this is a network mapped drive). I've read about enable libraries which we have done and added the network location to the "Pictures" library but still no go. All you get is "something went wrong..." when you try to take a picture with the normal windows 8 camera app. If we login using a local login then it works fine just not on the domain. Any ideas?? Thanks, Ash.

Group Policies not always applying Windows 7 wireless
spc-rocket replied to Cooners's topic in Windows 7
Hiya, You need to make sure that the network is given enough time to make the connection. Most of the time this is the issue with wireless cards is that windows boots faster and tries to looks for GPO processing etc before the network stack is initialised. To make the station wait for x amount of seconds try the following registry entry on one of the laptop to see if it consistently picks up the network at start. If it does you can roll this out using GPP or other method. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/840669 The article will state that this is only valid for xp and 2000 but it does also apply to windows 7 as well --> Windows 7 Clients intermittently fail to apply group policy at startup See how you get on with this. Hiya, Does AppData\Local;AppData\LocalLow get automatically excluded in windows 7 by default ?? Just checking i have not got these excluded from my set of exclusion. Thanks, Ash.

Hello all, We're having an issues with three file servers (only file servers which is strange) that are running server 2008 r2 with the latest hotfixes and sp1. The problem is that randomly the wmiprvse.exe process takes up all the cpu crippling the server and in the end it slows everything down i.e. file access etc. This is only happening on the file servers. We have made sure that is not a virus (scanned with av, malwarebytes others etc). Have looked at loads of website on the net about this but can't seem to find out what's causing this issue. The servers are simple plain server 2008 r2 that has file services role and nothing else. Its not even running file server resource manager or other stuff either. It does have quota enabled on the relevant partition where user's profile and home folder's reside. The other thing that it has is the AV. We disabled it temporarely to see if this was the issue but it didn't improve the situation. Just wondering if anyone has had anything like this or other suggestions that may help us catch the culprit. Thanks in advance, Ash.

Group policy will apply on every second login only
spc-rocket replied to fred54's topic in Windows Server 2008
Yes i agree with sparkeh it does sound like the always wait for network... gpo setting is not enabled or applying properly. -
Just to add to bossman's comments. We're also evaluating wireless network, we're looking at ruckus, aerohive and meru. Aerohive does have some really good features i must say. Regarding the cloud management, you can also have virtual appliance if you have visualization is in place at your establishment. I'm not sure how much traffic (wan) is required for the cloud controller to manage the APs with aerohive but i guess it would be minimal since all the config is on the ap. Ash.

Apple Configurator + iPad Mini's Silly Question! >>
spc-rocket replied to EN4CER's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
There are a few apps that allows you to save work but quite how they work i don't know. Mobile echo was one of the apps recommended if we wanted to get the files saved to their own user areas and sync with AD etc. It is a paid product, not done too much research on it. Ash. -
Apple Configurator + iPad Mini's Silly Question! >>
spc-rocket replied to EN4CER's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
@bossman, Yes this is what is happening at our place where we have a 30 ipad trolley which is used for investigative purposes so various faculties book them out and see how they go with them in terms of teaching and learning. Some faculties find it better than others and its the same for students, not all are convinced and as you pointed out when the initial euphoria is out of the way the interest and enthusiasm is lost. We are using them in a shared device scenario which is not the strong point of ipad. They are a bit, only a little bit better if offered on a 1:1 basis but for most schools this is not an option financially even with those wonderful leasing and parental contribution schemes. The lack of a file management really kills a lot of the functionality and you are really at the mercy of developers in regards to what support they providing to saving work from the app i.e. webdav, email, google drive, skydrive etc. Due to this its difficult for students to produce work and then save it to central place for marking or assessment. Apply Group Policy to OU but exclude certain computers?
spc-rocket replied to kennysarmy's topic in Windows
Hi, One way to do this would be to create a security group and add all items in that you want to apply the policy to and then security filter the GPO so it only targets the AD group rather than the default of OU. Ash. -
Hiya, The reg key you need is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\1\Desktop. Change the IconSize to the value of 32, 48, 64 etc. Not sure about which numbers means which size but it should work. You need to logoff and re-login again to see the changes. Ash.

Hi, We used a company called Ergo (based in Nottingham) to move away from the RM CC3 network to a new vanilla network. They were very good at explaining how they were going to migrate different services etc and i found the engineers to be very well knowlegeable. They have migrated lots of school from RM CCx network and hence they are very experienced in this area. It worth a meeting or call to discuss your requirements and see what they come up with. All the best, Ash.

@psydii We downloaded all the performance related fixes and inlcuded in the image before sysprep/mdt process and its working well. I've noticed that most of these also apply to server OS as well. Have you also patched your server 2008 r2 manually? with these hotfixes? I'm a bit relectant to do this just in case they break anything. It always has that silly message that this hotfix is intended to correct.....and has not gone through full regression testing... which i ignore on the client OS anyway. Ash.

That's great Nick. Thanks, Ash.

That's great. I just need to find out how to create a tile that incoprates the fully expanded path from the variables. Ash.
-
Hi Nick, Yes i was thinking along the same lines, except i was wondering if we could some how point the user's my document to the webdav. i.e. have the link to webdave for their my docs. Can i ask how you are getting the user's my document location reference in the code after they login to the main site. Thanks, Ash.
-
Hi, Thanks for comming back on this. Would it be possible to add the support for webdav? Thanks, Ash.
-
Hi, I would like to see support for webdav is possible. This will solve the problem of using silverlight plugin and make it a bit easier for users to open files and save them. The idea of checking out editing and then uploading file back again might be too much for some. Thanks, Ash.

Hi, This is down to the cookie issue with the one the .js script that is used on the site although there may be certificate issues. You may want to look at the following blog/article to see if this is the problem you're having.
