We've enabled the SketchUp for Schools app for our G Suite domain as we used to use the old desktop version. However, when anyone tries to open it from the Apps list they see a message saying "SketchUp for Schools is only available for students and teachers in primary and secondary education programs. Please ensure you are using a G Suite for Education account and your account administrator has enabled SketchUp for Schools for your domain" Its enabled and whitelisted for everyone in our domain, so I'm not sure what the issue is? Has anyone actually enabled it successfully for their G Suite domain?

I would be interested in a way to reset this on logout as well but haven't found any way of doing it. Its a catch 22 situation as the student mess about with it, then the staff complain to us - but we shouldn't really disable it in case someone genuinely needs to use it!

Well we fixed it - took some finding though! If anyone else sees this kind of error in our case it was actually caused by a dodgy entry in the BIOS, which was read into the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System\BIOS\SystemProductName as a null entry. Changing the entry manually seemed to temporarily get rid of the error, but on reboot the registry entry was null again. Having contacted the PC manufacturers we managed to get a utility to write a string into the BIOS to set the Product Name correctly. Reboot and the update service started worked again, and so far all of the affected PCs have appeared back in WSUS. It seems like a basic bit of error checking would be useful in the update service so that a null value doesn't scupper the whole thing, but there you go.

Same here on 1607,1703 and 1709.However with the security permissions set as my post above, and using machine preferences I get the printers more reliably. Having said that users don't see the printers on first login for ages, and more often than not the printer appear in an app (i.e Word) but never appear in the Devices and Printers (or only appear as an unknown device) Along with Updates, Printers and hanging explorer Windows 10 is wasting a lot of my time!

I've tried a couple of the usual scripts to reset Windows Update components but no joy. There is no way to update the Windows update client in W10 manually anymore so the only option is a new image - having said that this image is 4 months old and WU is failing on around 50% of the PCs it was installed on! The log seems to show these messages - alas MS have no help on what causes them. To me it looks like its trying to connect directly rather than the wsus server? 2018/01/17 10:44:52.6142280 3008 1020 WebServices [0]0BC0.03FC::01/17/2018-10:44:52.614 [webserviceinfra]WS error: Serialization failure occurred when writing an element with WS_WRITE_OPTION '1', name 'RegisterComputer' and namespace 'http://www.microsoft.com/SoftwareDistribution/Server/ClientWebService'. 2018/01/17 10:44:52.6142287 3008 1020 WebServices [0]0BC0.03FC::01/17/2018-10:44:52.614 [webserviceinfra]WS error: Serialization failure occurred when writing a field with WS_TYPE '26 (0x1A)', WS_FIELD_MAPPING '2', name 'computerInfo' and namespace 'http://www.microsoft.com/SoftwareDistribution/Server/ClientWebService'. 2018/01/17 10:44:52.6142300 3008 1020 WebServices [0]0BC0.03FC::01/17/2018-10:44:52.614 [webserviceinfra]WS error: Serialization failure occurred when writing a field with WS_TYPE '17 (0x11)', WS_FIELD_MAPPING '2', name 'DeviceType' and namespace 'http://www.microsoft.com/SoftwareDistribution/Server/ClientWebService'. 2018/01/17 10:44:52.6142303 3008 1020 WebServices [0]0BC0.03FC::01/17/2018-10:44:52.614 [webserviceinfra]WS error: The character value 11 (0xB) is not valid. 2018/01/17 10:44:52.6142322 3008 1020 WebServices [0]0BC0.03FC::01/17/2018-10:44:52.614 [webserviceinfra]WS error: Fault occurred 2018/01/17 10:44:52.6142335 3008 1020 WebServices [0]0BC0.03FC::01/17/2018-10:44:52.614 [webserviceinfra]WS Error code: Client Actually I found the cause of the above but it still doesn't get past the "Windows Update Client failed to detect with error 0x80240439" If anyone else get the 'character value 11 (0xb) is not valid then check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System\BIOS, make sure that there isn't an invalid (in my case null) value in SystemFamily,SystemManaufacturer or SystemProductName. I'm still stuck though on the 0x80240439 as none of the usual fixes are working.

Oddly all of these now appear in the WSUS console, as Windows 0.0 and status of 'Not yet reported' From past experience thats pretty much game over - so despite having had the Jan 2018 CU manually applied the next stage is a new image
-
Only problem with that, is that it requires flash [emoji51]

Alas yes that was the first thing I did. I’ve also run the troubleshooter and run the script to do a full reset windows update. I’ve tried deleting the pcs from Wsus and resetting their ids, pretty much tried everything I’ve ever had to do in the past when updates stopped working. It seems to be a w10 feature, when updates are broken, reimage unless of course you take Microsoft’s advice and runs sfc /scannow which has never fixed anything, ever!
-
Actually theres 3 errors logged in various sequences - the third is: Windows Update Client failed to detect with error 0x80240439 Ah well I think I've tried WSUS reset trick that's ever been done, time for a reimage. Good to see that MS still can't get updates working on 10
-
Before I start reimaging (seems to be the stock fix to W10 issues these days) has anyone ever managed to fix any of these Windows Update errors: Windows Update failed to check for updates with error 0x800704CF. Windows Update failed to check for updates with error 0x80244007. They seem to repeat in pairs on a lot of our W10 1703 machines.

The only issue I've had with the Remove common program groups from Start Menu policy is that it removes the standard installed programs like Office etc. Which may not be a problem for you but we leave them all on and remove the unwanted ones before imaging.

Does notebook 11 still work with office 2016 or does it still bring up the vba error?
-
Had an email from Google saying its now fixed, but I'm at home with a beer now so I'll try again on Monday!
-
Looks like its Google then - Smoothwall have had a look and can't see anything wrong - but it does work if we use an external connection. So my idea about our IP being blocked might be right!
-
I think deployed printers is a non starter in W10 now - we've had just about every PC fail to pick up deployed printers now (Machine GPP deployed) They appear on boot, disappear for some users - delete all their profiles and it may or may not appear for the next user, or perhaps the next one after that. Looks like we'll have to go backwards to the days of Windows 2000 and write a script to install the drivers and install the printers as local devices. What a farce. Edit: One thing I have noticed is that if you have permissions on the printers on the print server, make sure you have Domain Computers in there as well (basic Print rights) as this has fixed a few issues for us - it only started happening when we rolled out W10
-
Its any extension, on any device so far which makes me suspicious its the smoothwall - although initial testing shows no blocked entries when trying to add an extension. I've got a case open with Google now as well in case it is their side.
-
Getting weirder - any device (W7,W10 or Mac) cannot download extensions at all - its like we've been blocked from the webstore! Even bypassing the smoothwall and going directly out through the firewall has the same result. Hotspotting a laptop to a mobile phone does work however! Is it possible google have blocked our IP range from the store for some reason?
-
This is weird, on any machine (as an admin) I get an immediate error when trying to install. We block the chrome store for students, but not for admins
-
Nothing logged at at all - and I can't see anything with our smoothwall blocking it either. Nothing has changed really since we implemented the policy about 3 months ago!

We have a couple of Chrome extensions we've forcibly installed using GPOs: "User Configuration/Policies/Classic Administrative Templates/Google/Google Chrome/Extensions" "Configure the list of force-installed extensions" This was working fine until recently we've noticed they aren't appearing anymore - on both W10 and W7. The extension IDs are still valid, and they're on the latest version of Chrome. I can't see any errors -they just don't appear in the Chrome toolbar anymore - is anyone using this method? Maybe its linked - but I've noticed I can't install any Chrome extensions from the web store - every one shows 'Access Denied' and Failed-Forbidden for the .crx download file - even as an admin?

Its definitely the report causing it - once started it leaves a job running which I have to kill in the SQL Server activity monitor - otherwise anyone making a simple change gets a timeout error
-
I've got a case open with everyone at the minute! It seems like the actual report that runs is hanging - which explains why the xporter job hangs. Running the report in realtime in SIMS also hangs so I'm not sure how to proceed, the report was presumably installed with the meritec xporter job?
-
I've run the diagnostics and validation and it only took a few minutes. All checked out ok but the report still hangs. As the people who supplied the report can't help I've just uninstalled the damn thing as when it runs it causes loads of database timeouts for the other SIMS users! Thats the problem, its Capita/Meritec/Groucall all saying its each others issue!
-
Cheers. Might give that a try. Problem is I exported the affected report, deleted it and tried to reimport it and its not appearing in the list of reports! Ah well, it wasn’t working anyway [emoji51]
-
Anyone else using the Meritec Groupcall Xporter for exporting cpoms data? We have been for a while now but one of the main reports (gcx_meritec_students) will not run anymore - it simply hangs SIMS, and the Xporter console times it out after several hours of running. It was working ok and all other reports (including various other groupcall xporter reports are working OK) Of course Meritec says its SIMS, and Capita say its Meritec ;-) Its running on a VM with 65GB ram and 2*8 core processors and performance isn't an issue - besides it was running on the VM well before it decided to fail. Anyone got any ideas? If meritec themselves don't have any suggestions then I'm stuck!
