FYI We bought the Imac's with 80gig hdd, 1gig ram 1.83cpu for £475 a machine. Not bad in my opinion.
-
Thanks for the info peeps Don't really want to "bootcamp" them, may go as far as parallels but thats it. We put them in mainly for video editing, music creation, podcasting etc. The kids will pick them up easily enough, but the staff are going to need to be assisted. It is looking more likely that I will be doing a lot of the training myself - so any documentation ould be handy. Looks like its presentation time.

We have just purchased 30 imac's for a new "mac" suite I am setting up over easter. now myself and the head "like" mac's and can use them The IT co-ordinator likes mac's but can't use them and the other staff .... well ... you know what teachers are like. So I was wondering what you guys do for training, on site or off. :?: What are my options, what's the chances of getting Apple involved in the venture for free - we give them positive advertising ? Based in South Wales.

County has ISA2000 that all schools authenticate to to get internet access. Problem is that streaming media does not work through it. We have installed ISA Server firewall client on a machine and have setup protocols to allow realmedia streaming through the network, but its not working. If I hover over the firewall client icon on my client machine it says "ISA server could not be detected" and real media player will not connect to outside world. Any advice would be appreciated cheers Si

OK we are ordering 20 or so Imac's today - we will have a windows suite and a mac suite then. (not bad for a primary) I have had a Mac here to play with, managed to gt it taling to my exchange box and fileserver box. Is there a great need for the osx server too - what are the benefits of an osx server as well as my windows servers ?

Still play rugby most weekends

make sure you have the latest service pack installed - had this problem, service pack fixed it.
-
My linux experience is "NIL" at present - so this could be an opportunity to play. what's minimum speck for squid to run on ?

Currently we Authenticate to County ISA 2000 server which provides schools with "surfcontrol" protected content. Now Each schoo, is issued with a username and password to log onto the internet. We found teachers didnt like the idea of having to enter the uid/pass/domain evertime they went online and it proved problematic with infant children being able to type correctly. So we currently use Python with "NTLM Authorization Proxy Server" script which works ok. but we recently developed problems with certain SSL sites, the authentication to these sites failed and we could not gain access. So to stop my rambling - does anyone else have this issue and if so - what do they use to get around it ? Thanks Si

Thats it in a nutshell. Will stick with the Cisco kit - easier in the long run.
-
Thanks. Voip is currently separated via Vlans, I would love to stick with Cisco but the head is after saving money if poss, thats the only reason for mixing hardware.

County are currently supplying schools a centrally managed VIOP service, using a range of Cisco phones (7912 etc) and using Cisco Catalyist switches and Vlans. I now need to extend my current network so that all classrooms can have a voip phone. My catalyst switches are full and it would cost around 2k for another cisco catalyst, Have looked at a Cisco express switch £300 ish but wondered if a managed netgear for around£100 would do the trick? Does VOIP need Vlan support AND QOS or just Vlan ? Thanks

Tried just ip and netbios name of server. Mac network tools will ping the exchange box with no problem. Mac mail says it supports Exchange natively - but hey it dont for me.
-
I can't get my mac talking to my exchange server via mac mail. I run through the wizard and I enter the incomming/outgoing exchange servers "mail.school.gov.uk" but neither incomming or outgoing servers are reachable. In fact the New Account setup process just hangs after entering the "outgoing" mail server details. Has anyone any pointers, I have no clue about osx cheers Si

There is also a command line option for installing printers globally to a machine. RUNDLL32 PRINTUI.DLL,PrintUIEntry /ga /n\\printserver\printer http://www.robvanderwoude.com/index.html for more examples -

http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=6075&highlight=richprofile covers this topic fella

Note that it's for Outlook 2000 and Outlook 2002 (Officed XP). For Outlook 2003 you would have to use CIW or CMW from the Office Resource KIT. Or use the /profile switch with the Outlook executable FYI using it with Outlook 2003 with no problems
-
Or you could use a program called RichProfile creator: http://desktopengineer.com/story_20011129081953709 Run it in the logon script. Works great! Will do just what you want.
-
Re install windows update. unzip and right click iuctl.inf to install (with IE closed) then try windows update again.
-
Tweakui will do what you want
-
So simple - hadnt thought of that Cheers

I have just been asked by a Primary school teacher if we can ditch Granada Toolkit (YIPPEEE) But.... They want year 3/4 to have a visually different Word package to the 5/6 year. i.e. 5/6 to have full toolbars and icons and 3/4 to only have the std icons, cut / paste etc. Office is pushed out via gpo (win2000 server) Desktops are XP Each yeargroup has its own login. Anyone give me any pointers ? thanks
