Yes, definitely agree. This is the stuff that I think AI is really good for. The fact that you can tailor it exactly to your specific needs is what makes it good. So far I've made bespoke: Minibus booking system Performance Management Review System Intranet Landing Page, links, news, notices, etc.. I'm using VS-Code pointing at my IIS server, with the Codex plugin. Yes, it gets through credits building the stuff, but once it is done the system you have built has no ongoing licence costs. I'm not exposing school data directly to the AI. All the data I use flows from Bromcom into Sharepoint Lists, and all the systems are authenticated using 365 SSO. This means you can easily do permissions, such as 'the admin team can add notices to the front page'. The Performance Management System using SQL-Express as the backend as that is a bit more complex and has to deal with things like data retention. Now working on a full IT Management System, but that is taking longer. Plan to try to link directly to the Bromcom API. A few screenshots attached. Would like to see screenshots of what others have made.

Schoolsbroadband down (anyone else?)
mitchell1981 replied to Frodo_Baggins's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Weirdly for us, although almost nothing worked, Google search continued to work. Perhaps the reason for failovers not triggering is because it was never completely down. Our Smoothwall reported the internet connection as UP throughout. -
Yes, no problems for us either other than a few slightly slow reports but that seems to be back up to speed now. Very smooth start to the year for our schools. Well done Bromcom!

I'm not convinced that emailed scheduled reports are working properly for us. I've triggered a few manually this morning and just noticed that none of them have arrived. We use the built in SMTP. It could just be extremely slow.

Smoothwall Updates Slowing internet too <1Mb
mitchell1981 replied to machy's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Is this still an ongoing issue for anyone? We've been getting complaints about our Surface Go 2 laptops for a while now. I finally got around to testing one today, and the internet speed is very poor. I've not tried disabling the cloud filter yet as it's all enforced by intune and it's tricky to disable it. Is there a known quick fix such as just updating Edge or Windows? Thanks. -
Same for us.

School Wi-Fi Upgrade – Seeking Advice on UniFi Deployment
mitchell1981 replied to leewakelam's topic in Wireless Networks
We moved from Meru to U7 Pros and some U7 Pro Maxes. We dropped from about 150 APs, to 90. Horrendous problems from September 2024 - December 2024, we were about to give up and replace the whole lot, but it turned out to be bad firmware. UniFi released an update and it's been completely stable since December 2024, and very few WiFi problems. I would just say to be cautious of brand new products, and read the comments on the forums about specific models before purchase, but in general we are now very happy with our UniFi stuff. -
25H2 - New GPO to remove MS default apps from system
mitchell1981 replied to TheRobins's topic in Windows 11
Just to clarify, is Outlook for Windows the same as New Outlook? If I were to remove this would it prevent people switching to New Outlook? Or is something even more cut down than New Outlook?! -
Interesting. Unfortunately all our handsets are the T48S and the newest firmware is 66.86.0.180 so I think we are stuck with it. I tried a factory reset on the off-chance, but no change.

Same problem, another year later! I'm guessing this one wil never be fixed.

We currently use Bromcom for our MIS, ParentPay for online payments, and Civica, for the backend cashless system. Has anyone else made the move to remove ParentPay, and go Bromcom direct to Civica (or another backend). I was hoping someone who has done the process can tell me what happens with positive balances, and what happens with negative balances? I know I should just ask, but with so many services involved, I'm not sure who to ask! Thank you.

I'm setting up MRBS just for booking some minibuses as Bromcom doesn't handle it in the way we want. The portal works nicely, but I'm struggling to configure SMTP. Has anyone got MRBS to send emails via 365 SMTP? If so, could I possibly see a copy of your config.inc.php file? Thank you.

They change names so much they don't even know what they call their own products! I notice someone else says that the problem only occurs if the primary user is different from the actual user. Do you know if that was true on the devices that you had with the problem? I've installed the remediation anyway just in case. Thank you.
-
The Admin Centre report says: More Info: While we're focused on remediation, admins may be able to delete the contents of the "%windir%\Temp\WinGet\defaultState" folder and restart the device to temporarily mitigate the issue. Scope of Impact: This issue may potentially affect any user with a Windows Intune device utilizing the Intune Store application. Root Cause: A recent update to the Intune Store application version contains a code issue that is causing error logging to take up too much disk space. Can anyone confirm what they mean by the InTune Store Application. Is this a different thing from Company Portal?

Looks like they have just put this on the status page, so there is a problem. Some users experiencing performance issues We have had some reports this morning of user experiencing slowness in some system areas within the MIS. This is being investigated with urgency.

Anyone else having speed issues (or not working at all issues) with Bromcom this morning? Status page says all is well, so wanted to check if it's just us.

What is the correct way to add an ITT (trainee) to Bromcom so you can assign them the role of Classroom Teacher, but without setting them up a contract, as HR tell me they don't have a contract with us. Seems like the Roles settings, are only available under a contract. Becuase we pull through a lot of stuff with Salmander we want to have teaching and non-teaching staff properly set in Bromcom. Thank you.

Thank you. This is really useful. And good advice about the test instance. I'll do that before I go any further!

Hi All, I know there are a few Bromcom API users on here. I'm very new to this. I want to write back some data to Bromcom using a PowerApp. Specifically write to a UDF. As per the screen shot, how do I identify the 'userDefinedFieldInstanceId' which I assume identifies the specific UDF. I thought it would be the name of the UDF, but it looks like it's expecting a number. Assuming I can configure this data correctly, how do I then send this to the API. Do I use an invoke-webrequest, and if so, how do I know how to format it? Apologies, if I'm asking stupid questions. I haven't found the api guidance particularly comprehensive.

Holiday Time Safeguarding Monitoring
mitchell1981 replied to mitchell1981's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Thank you. To be fair on the DSL, it is her who has asked the question. I think she is just looking for advice on how other schools handle it, before updating the policy. I'm not going to allow this to fall back on the IT Team. -
Hi All, We've recently started giving students take-home devices, and we have pushed out the Smoothwall Cloud filter to monitor their usage. The safeguarding team are pleased with it, and are reacting to notifications as and when the come in. But this has raised discussions around what our response should be during holiday time, when staff are not necessarily checking emails daily, and have not been historically contracted to be working. Where does our responsibility begin and end? How do other schools deal with this? If not checked, we could miss something critical that ends in disaster, but to expect staff to work on their holiday, is not something we have done before. Does this fall back to someone who is full-time? I know there are services that can monitor this stuff on our behalf, but they would still need to report to someone at the school for action to be taken. Or perhaps we should not be monitoring devices at home at all during holidays, and require parents to take responsibility as a condition of having a device? Thank you.
-
Ahhh, thank you. A shame it's not a bit more comprehensive! Good starting point to work it out though. I've now got a Powershell script that will pull the student photo from their admission number. Going to try to get it working in PowerApps now.
