  1. Agreed Sorry forgot to add that aspect - yes with relevant court rulings.
  2. Both can have an account without issue. However a potential point to consider is that in some instances of divorce, one parent may not be allowed access to their child's information before consultation with the other parent. I have seen a couple of instances of this nature, so could be beneficial to check with a pastoral leader.
  3. Interesting that you give $50 voucher with all the ipads in order to cover paid for apps the schools expects students to use. Hadn't really considered that given the cost it would involve with over 1600 students on our site. The main reason for locking devices down, certainly within our organisation is because the devices are the schools, not the students and they are not on a 1:1 ratio. If the devices were personal to a specific individual then we would take a route similar to yourself. As the devices are the schools and used cross curricular central management is required in order to download and update apps required and to monitor costs amongst other things.
  4. Sorry to bump open an old thread - just wondered if anyone had purchased the said magazine and if it was worth a look or indeed helpful?
  5. RM do a cheaper licence cost that excludes the RM tutor part - if your just installing within an office for example and don't need tutor then ask for a (I think level 1 licence) not listed on the website any more Community Connect Client Licences but they def do one as i have a fair few Dont use tutor anywhere except for within ICT suites, so was pointless buying licences for it. Wasnt a massive reduction but every little helps.
  6. Weve had BYOD for sixth formers and staff for the past 2 1/2 years and its been a great success. Utilised with the net, a well populated VLE, Citrix, email (OWA) and HAP its a very good solution. Looking to continue a rollout with younger students, however we are considering the more political circumstances of encouraging BYOD, like muggings and charging of the devices. *edit - I dont believe it will ever replace our current static desktop offerings, due to the specific nature of some software etc such as photoshop or sibelius for example, but as an additional offering, we havent had any issues.
  7. I would firstly suggest doing a little research on the school and what it offers already or has in place, that can give you an idea if there are things you can utilise, for example managed wireless could tie in well with things like mobile devices like the Ipad or equivalent and how they can be utilised correctly for staff and students etc. @Oaktech has some good ones to start you off, others could include Communication - e.g. VOiP Access to resources 24/7 - MIS, email, My Documents etc
  8. All aspects of MIS are important for us - different modules affect different people, medical for nurse, timetabling for timetabler, attendance for all teachers (legal obligation). From a technical point of view its got to just be reliable - minimum downtime. @SouthCoastSaint You can see outstanding registers on the SIMS homepage, I have it setup so I can see outstanding for all teachers - not sure if you can set it for just your own though. @PhilNeal - The facility to email staff about their marksheets not being completed will be a good addition, but only if you dont need intouch as suggested previously.
  9. Still not working on CC4.3 - having to look at alternatives.
  10. Theres another thread about a similar product somewhere but also went on to talk about these devices as well. We're still considering them - smartboard with projector and install is still cheaper than the equivalent screen size ctouch do. Weve also utilised smartboard software well in the past, so would need to be sure we can do a faultless transition. They should however need less attention, like bulbs and filters etc. Be interested how you get on with one - will they give you a trial unit?
  11. HAHAHAHA like the Mr Cameron idea!
  12. I saw these, and was quite impressed, but as mentioned they were still a little expensive when compared with the Clever Touch - probably be able to play them against each other for more accurate pricing. But even so compared with cost of projector, install, and smartboard they are still off the mark. Even when considering bulbs and filters etc.
  13. At BETT room booking Room Booking system announced their version which is integrated with SIMS.net. Around £200 a year they said maybe less. Have an email somewhere from them. *looks through emails* Last week at the BETT show we announced we’re now Capita SIMS SQL Technical Partners. In a couple of months we expect to release a SIMS integrated version of the Room Booking System. All the rooms, periods, term dates, timetable models, timetable cycles and timetable class information are synced every day from SIMS to your Room Booking System. The integrated version will be initially priced at £156 per annum. (PS: We are also Serco Learning Partners and offer full integration with Facility and shortly with Progresso too.) If you have any questions about the Room Booking System or would like any assistance, please call us on 0845 224 2034 or reply to this email
  14. You can set different levels to access RMMC - Is there not an access right which only allows basic message facility?
  15. We tried and tested HD Fury II with apple TV, ipad with VGA projector and it worked fine, just had to correct aspect ratio once all connected. Proved to be a pain if someone wanted to use the only VGA in on the projector for the PC though, cause you had to disconnect it all, and cant really expect teachers to unplug everything and re plug everything in correctly. But that was the only issue. Price was a bit steep as well really but we are starting to phase out the old projectors and ensure new ones have HDMI input which makes it a lot easier and works very well.
  16. As @Soulfish says (good link by the way) it depends on how you want to use / licence it. We went for the concurrent user scheme. We have around 200 concurrent licences but the amount of people that use them very rarely reaches that amount. We have about 275 people that are permitted access, but I would say the most that have accessed at one time is around 150, this made it more cost effective than paying per user.
  17. Thanks for posts guys. It would be a passive TV that was purchased because of the cost of the glasses. I just think 3D is one of the latest Buzz words to hit education similar to the iPAD. Ill bob to currys at some point and have a look - see if they will play the DVD in question, you never know. I still dont believe there is enough 3D content on the market at the moment to warrant a purchase, hence why the question about 2D to 3D conversion came up, which is probably fair enough. Thanks
  18. Cheers for reply @Millgate Do you have the actual sky 3d sports channels for footy, or is that converted from 2D? Been asked the question, if using the 2D to 3D conversion will improve for example a Biology DVD of the human body etc
  19. Just wondering if anyone has a 3D TV and has experienced the 2D to 3D conversion and would share their thoughts on it. Researched on the net, and its pretty hit and miss - some people say its good others say stay clear. Thanks
  20. Will need more information than what you have given. Is it managed wireless? Have MAC authentication? Type of security etc are examples of information needed really otherwise its a bit of a needle in a haystack with information you've provided. Does it work if you connect with network cable? Do you connect if you specify a static IP. If you cant connect via wireless - personally I would attempt via a cable in the first instance then at least you have an idea if its network based or wireless based issue.
  21. We impose a 1GB limit on staff but will allocate more as required without a problem. Although looking at averages most staff have around 200MB. We utilise shared areas extensively which probably helps. Biggest issue with space is email IMHO - staff use it as storage and don't archive. I haven't got a problem with people having larger than life mailboxes etc, but the backups take such a long time on exchange because of the sizes I would rather educate staff on archiving than simply increasing mailbox sizes, although I have had to have several conversations because staff flag up that hotmail allows them to store something like 10GBs of mail why cant we etc.
  22. Assume these or ones similar will be at BETT? Agree with @nephilim that doing away with all cabling and staff not drawing on them would be a good cheeky bouns.
  23. Well done on getting an interview. What kind of job is it? As that will aid in your research. Based on experience the only differences were - MIS system, its geared towards the independent schools so find out what they use if possible and research prior to interview. Funding is different to state sector, very rare that you can apply for special grants etc. budget cuts happen for most so ensure any ideas or answers can be sustainable. Just because its an independent school doesn't mean it has lots of money to spend on ICT. Other than that, there isnt really that much difference, worked in a few state schools and an independent school, and apart from students being a bit more polite not much else I can think of, its still the same kind of issues you would get anywhere. Happy to chat more if you want to PM or ask specifics.
  24. I remember the days of floppy drives and the worst thing i ever found was a condom! Yes you read right, a condom un packaged and stuffed inside the floppy drive! Didnt care to see if it was used or not just binned it!
