iPads appearing as placeholders in OSX Server 5.1
andyk replied to andyk's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Thanks for this Antonio, I'll certainly check out the links and articles that you have provided. I am also going to have a look at some of the MDMs you've suggested. Yes, we can push/pull management profiles to the Macbooks without problem, but not with the iPads. I'll continue with this on Monday taking in to consideration all you have said and I will report back my findings. Cheers!- 2 replies

I am in the process of setting up profile manager but I have run in to a couple of issues that I am hoping someone can help me with. The server is configured and profile manager is fully accessible on the network via a web browser using https://servername/profilemanager/ Profile Manager can be opened on the iPads and any Windows machine. The iPads seem to enroll in profile manager, however, they appear only as placeholders and nothing more. I've deployed a proxy pac file with exceptions for the OSX server, but still nothing. The pac file has been tested and works so should hopefully eliminate this. I can enroll our Macbook Pros without issue, but the ipads simply don't want to play. All the usual suspects appear to be working fine - dns, open directory etc. I've also updated the iPads. I wondered if the iPads need a different port opening on the firewall or if anyone could offer any suggestions? Thanks

Apologies if this is in the place! I am trying to push out some proxy settings to iPads via a pac file on our network. The issue I'm facing specifically relates to iPads in that they appear not to be reading the proxy details from the file. The proxy URL is configured on the iPads wifi settings (automatic) and in the form of http://servername/ipads/proxy.pac. I've also tried using the IP address in place of the server name. I've accessed the proxy.pac file through safari (using the URL) and I can can see the contents of it, however, the proxy settings are just not applying or the iPads simply aren't downloading the config, despite being set to use these details. The pac file does work as I've tested the same URL on a windows machine which runs without issues. I wondered if there is something that I am missing for ios and osx machines? Any help would be great.

Thanks Steve, will give that a go.

Hi, Does anyone know where I might get hold of a Windows Movie Maker MSI installer for Windows 7? If not, what are the best practices for deploying it? Thanks in advance! Andy

That's the same for me Sparkeh. All other workstations can connect, but despite identical config deployed through group policy - e.g. internet setting etc, I only have only workstation that doesn't want to sync. I am going to try and contact Google through the apps admin portal to see if they can offer any insight. Long shot, but worth a go.

Hi James, Cheers for the link - I'll definitely give the suggestions mentioned in your post try. It's a real pain and, like you, I just can't seem to get to the bottom of it. If I get any further with it I will let you know. Thanks! Andy

I've got a rather strange issue with Google Drive on only one Windows 7 64 bit workstation. For some reason Drive will no longer connect to the Internet and as such won't sync. The Drive tray icon is greyed-out and gives me no options to edit any settings or preferences. All other workstations that run Google Drive are absolutely fine which eliminates any network firewall related issues that could be blocking the connection. Our Internet connection is working without issues. We do run behind a proxy provided by the LA. Updates are applied to Windows 7 but are always tested before deployment in the event it causes any issues such as this. So far I have: - Reinstalled Google Drive - Tried temporarily disabling Eset Endpoint Anti-Virus - Added drive to Windows Firewall - Temporarily disabled Windows Firewall - Tried stopping and then restarting Drive by running it manually from C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Drive\googledrivesync.exe - Rebooted the machine a number of times - Checked the drive logs which give an output as follows: 2015-10-13 10:13:55,614 +0100 INFO pid=4484 4532:LaunchThreads common.sync_app:1668 Network initializing account: ConnectionFailure: 'Error [Errno 10061] No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it', recovery plan: RecoveryPlan.UNKNOWN, recovery targets: set([]) I am currently at a loss with this so any help would be great! Thanks!

Thanks Davit2005. I've ticked this but still nothing despite rebooting and gpupdate /force on client side. Items are showing from the redirect, but simply old desktop icons that are stored locally are also appearing. It is a mix between desktop folder redirect items and local desktop items. Any further ideas would be great.

Hi, I've taken over from a technician who used to store pupil desktops locally on each machine. I want to redirect student desktops to one location. I've applied the redirection which appears to be working as I can see a test redirect folder on student desktops. The problem I have, however, is that old desktop items that are stored locally are also showing on the desktop, despite the redirect in place. I would expect only the test redirect folder to be shown, and not a mix of server side and local items. The settings are as follows: Basic - redirect everyone's folder to the same location Target - redirect to the following location Root path: \\server\PupilDesktop Setting tab: I've only ticked: Also apply redirection policy to windows 2000.... Policy Removal: Leave the folder in the new location when policy is removed. How can I remove the desktop items stored locally so that the desktop only looks to the redirected folder. We run server 2012 and windows 7 clients. Any advice would be welcome.

For anyone who has the above error, I resolved the problem by restarting IIS. I also added the IUSR_computer name to the \Windows\Microsoft.NET directory and give it read and write permissions. One or the other fixed it :-)

So most Windows 7 computers have been discovered using WSUS, however, some windows 7 machines are giving me an 80244017 error. Any help would be great on why some machines are not reporting to WSUS.

Thanks for all of your help. I've installed it following this excellent guide onto an old Server which is no longer a DC. It doesn't have any other roles either. Installation went smoothly. I'm now just waiting for it to synchronise for the first time.

Sorry guys one question. Do you install this on your domain controller? The server that I am planning to install this on currently has active directory, file server, dns and dhcp roles.

Perfect, cheers @computer_expert. Andy

I just wondered if anyone has set-up Windows Server Update Services on server 2012? If so, is there anything specific to look out for compared with older server operating systems? I've read this article and wondered if the the steps are the same as it doesn't mention Server 2012 under the 'applies to:'. Windows Server Update Services 3.0 SP2 Step By Step Guide I've not set this up before so I am reluctant to go ahead before doing a little bit of research. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks. No changes to the OS or windows updates. As far as I can see the hardware is all OK. It just didn't power back from a reboot. Gets as far as the windows logo and then the screen turns black.

Hi We have a server that doesn't want to boot. The server 2003 startup logo appears and then then screen turns black and nothing happens. I've tried booting up in safe mode (it hangs when listing windows files) and restoring to last known good configuration, but nothing works. Any help appreciated. Andy

Thanks for all of your suggestions guys. I will take a look at them all on Monday!

We are looking to add a NAS unit to our network as a central place to store videos, pictures, and other multimedia. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations as to what unit would do a suitable job? Ideally, we are looking for a 1TB RAID drive that is robust. The plan is to then map these drives to user areas from the NAS. Cost wise, below £300 - I know this is low, but we don't have a huge budget for this. Any recommendations appreciated.
