Welcome to Network hell part3 After lunch today i lost all conectivity on our network. Some but not all of our switch's were flashing like mad, usual symptom of a little darling connecting 2 wall outlets with a patch cable. Searched high and low in all IT labs, offices, comms cabs etc but can't seem to find the loop. Re started switchs, tried them one by one but still no connectivity. Next guess spyware/virus. Can you get internal DofS attacks? Even re booted the servers. Left still no connectivity Any ideas (however mad) would be much appreciated.

Yep they are Mandatory, got them settled down now but not sure how the permissions changed on the folder to All for the Everyone group? This seemed to allow the workstations to write the profile back to the server with .pol and changes to desktop etc. which was causeing the problem. Now re set the permissions and cross fingers seem ok.

Super Stewie suggests doing a search for bartpe on the web. Apparently this app can grab data from a disk (if you can see it). If it essential there are companies who charge (£50?) per meg to recover data

Right! should not have posted that last post coz its bleedy happened again. Watching a scroat log in and out via VNC when all of a sudden the profile failed again. WHY, any ideas? What ownership and rights should be set on the profiles folder on the server (2000). Any ideas will prevent me from being bald.

server 2000 XP clients No XP templates in AD (i inherited this) No folder redirection that i can see Mandatory profiles i think

OK is this a random Microsoft Server problem or should i worry about it and how can i get it back working? At the start of P2 today all users got the following login funny "Windows did not load your roaming profile and is attempting to log you on with your local profile. Changes to the profile will not be copied to the server when you logoff. Windows did not load your profile because a server copy of the profile folder already exists that does not have the correct security. Either the current user or the Administrator's group must be the owner of the folder. Contact your network administrator." They then get a different desktop and can't access their files. In AD in the user the profile path is set to the following UNC path: \\data-server\data\profiles\test For whatever reason i could not access this folder and had to take control. The ntuser.ini ntuser.dat and ntuser.dat.log files were owned by a pupil login and were date stamped at the end of p1 today. Any help would be much appreciated to regain my login. I don't want to re engineer the network as i have inherited a beast that defy's all known networking logics.

Why bad mojo? i only have XP Pro clients so shouldn't have to worry?

Stupid question but i ask it as i don't want to cock up my existing AD/GPO setup. If i import XP adm files onto my 2000 server will these overwrite my current settings or will they just fit in and work?

Why blame the NM? I'm sure at Hathershaw they have some bigwig in charge of this thing, not your put upon NM.

Whats the feeling about Netgear kit?

If you can't afford CISCO switch's, what make would you get? Netgear 3 COM D-Link Any other?

I hold my hands up and addmit that i no b*gger all about NT4 W/S so need some help with this funny. User logs onto workstation Goes to SIMS.net If they choose pupil then a Protected Storage message box comes up asking for a password. None seem to make it happy and SIMS bugs out on them. If i goto services and stop Protected services then SIMS.net hangs. What else can i do?
