We caught 4 scumbags on our CCTV when they came and tried to steal a projector. Trouble is their out in a few weeks. Just hope they decide to target the other schools that don't have CCTV.

OK we don't even let him know our first names were that tight on security. At my last school thay managed to get the head of ICT's password by haveing a team of students who's job it was to watch part of the keyboard and remember whick keys he pressed. They then assembled his password from that. I always take the keyboard of the desk and turn my back to a wall and type the password with the keyboard a good 5 1/2 feet plus in the air.

Without admin rights he is fit to take machines apart, fit net network cards, clean mice (you've got to start somewhere afterall), learn to crimp cables, understand the basics of TCP/IP, realise what backups are and how/why you do them. Accept that infared is not a reliable form of connectivity. See why you have to document things (and do some of the less interesting stuff for us). Learn about health and safety by tidying up cables and 1000's of other crap joey jobs thatits nice to farm out to a willing slave.

We don't give our apprentice admin rights (who would be so daft). We let him help with hardware stuff and shadow us on basic network stuff so that he can learn the basics. We have no lessons on a wednesday afternoon and use this time for maintenance work etc. so have more time to work with him.

We have a high profile with the kids. They see us out and about doing jobs and often speak to us regarding downloading music. In the past we've run computer building clubs and at the moment have a year 10 apprentice who helps out one afternoon a week. Geeks are few and far between. Mostly they know something and big it up because their friend don't so that they appear to be computer wizzez. I always put staff right who say that kids are more expert than them by explaining that they arn't, they are just less afraid Here's a tip for passwords. With agreeement of Head of ICT or SMT, charge a 10p fine for password changes. Then use the money collected to buy things like CD's etc.. The number of password changes soon drops!!!!

Optical is the only way (but they do go walkies some of the time) Oh 1 per 125 here and spend 75% of our time showing staff how to press the FN key and F# to get output to their interactive whiteboard so that they can show DVD'd (very interactive!!!!!)

A data base for recording behaviuor

SIMS.net does have a behaviour managment section where a lot of the sleuth stuff can be recorded. The trouble is getting teaching staff to use it for recording incidents rather than swamping pastoral support with paper.

Does anyone know of a PC application that is like a note pad that floats over another application (such as word) so that you can draft ideas on it while being able to type in word without having a split screen or minimising the other app?

With the end of term just around the corner and it being the season of goodwill, just how appreciated do you feel? The Mullet Man and me have now got a small collection of booze (i lead 5 bottles to 4) as well as chockies. Do you staff show you how much they appreciate your efforts? Makes all the hard work and stress of the past weeks worth its while.

OK here's what is happening. 98 PC's, drive map to user my docuents does not work, they find docs by navigateing through My Computer ''Think i may need to set user areas as old style share?" They save work as usual in My Doc's on server Sometimes when they log off all of their files but not their folders just go.

OK we put in some nice new sexy 2003 servers during half term and they work a treat. Problem is (no laughing at the back) we still have to run a number of 98 machines till we put them out to pasture next year. Can't afford to upgrade them so please don't suggest that!!! What happens is that sometimes when a kid does some work on them and logs off the file contents (but not the folders) of their my docs folder in their user area disappear. Not good news for Yr 10 + 11 and their course work. Any ideas? Dosn't seem to happen every time but has on a test user for us so its not kid related.

got mother of all colds (bird flu?) and can't get my head around a simple problem Need to share a printer in an office coz they broke the tray on one. XP Pro PC user want her own printer to share with other user who is on an NT 4 W/S machine. Set the share on XP Pc but then on NT it asks for drivers, downloaded these but still won't connect. Feel like Sh!t, head about to explode and nose running like Niagra falls. whats the simple solution (except go home and stop being a hero)

a member of staff had a HDD failure and a well meaning friend ran fixboot from the recovery console. They now have a c: partition but no data. Anyone recommend a cheap/free product that could recover their data as they have no backup and so no work.
