You have highlighted a very important point, but like most of us that work in primary schools we are on our own with no one to ask for help apart from the members of Edugeek. I suppose it's a tall order for a technician to move from 2003 to 2010 anyway, but as I said above we are on our own and I can't see myself attending a 5 day course while I work here.

Update: Rebooting made no difference so I set the service to delayed start which did the trick. RPC client access service now starts every time.

Thanks Will, just looking at WSB now. Had to make a virtual disk on the NAS as WSB didn't like backing up to the share. I'll report further when I've tested WSB fully

Wow... quotes are coming in around the £800-£900 mark all just to backup Exchange and the files. Surely there is something cheaper that I can run on the same box and do the same job? With Server 2003 I just scripted NTBackup and it worked fine, talk about a hammer to crack a nut.

At the moment I've only got the demo version of backup exec 2010 which works fine with server 2008r2. @Willott: Which part number is it which will do this. I received my Virgin Media phone bill (landline) this week so I checked the bill and was surprised to see a chargeable call to my Virgin mobile. This might not seem like a big deal but I take their talk unlimited service so calls to Virgin mobiles are free 24/7 as long as it's under 60 minutes. So I emailed Virgin about this and the reply was that my mobile is not with Virgin which is funny as I've had this number for 7 years and it's definitely a Virgin mobile. Makes me wonder how many other times I've been charged for calls that are supposed to be free as this call was only itemised because it was over 50p... well the call was £0.59 but it's the principle!

On checking the services the RPC Client Access Service had not started. Now I've started it Outlook clients connect fine. The service is set to auto start so I can't understand why it's doing this. I'll give the server a reboot and see if it's still playing up.

Update: I've installed Exchange update rollup 2 but it's not helped. Further testing shows that Outlook 2007 clients can't connect either so it looks like the problem is with Exchange and not the clients. I've done something wrong but I can't see what

No, I don't recall doing that. Can this be changed now using power shell or the Exchange console?

Thank for the reply. The clients are accessing internally and using WSUS for the updates. What classification was the update in WSUS... most likely the one I don't have selected

Right, I've sorted all but one error now but this one has got me foxed. I've moved a mailbox over to Exchange 2010 and now I can't get Outlook 2003 to connect to it. Encryption is off and I've dropped the firewalls on both the server and client. The error message is: Everything I can find on Google refers changing the encryption settings but that's already disabled.

Can't help with the thumbnail problem but it's good to see a primary school that's not afraid to show the faces of the pupils on images or videos. What app did you edit the video in? I particularly like the multiple frames in the welcome video.

Thanks for the replies. That's the sort of specs I had in mind. Any advice on what make of machine to go for or avoid? John is leaning towards HP and as I said above I usually go for HP as well. Both of my schools have a number of HP USFF machines but on this occasion I was thinking of avoiding this type as they lack a serial port and the machines will need to run old Activboards with serial connections.

Starting to price up for new machines in the classrooms and wondered what spec other are using in the classroom? This is for a primary school so don't need anything too powerful but want them to last 4-5 years. They will be connected to XGA projectors and Activboards. I usually buy HP machines because they give little trouble but find the SSF to be a little large as in deep cases for the classrooms I've got in mind so will be looking for something wider rather than deeper. So I've hit another problem. I'm following Install Exchange 2010 in an Existing Exchange 2003 Organization: Exchange 2010 SP1 Help and I've got to halfway down the page about Configuring the Client Access Server and I keep getting the error It doesn't seem to matter if I'm configuring OWA, OAB or any of the other setting listed in this section. It looks like something is not installed but I've followed the guide the best I can and I can't see where I've gone wrong

Just looking at the ipsca site and on the request page there is a dropdown for server types. What should I choose for a certificate to work with Exchange 2010? Is it Microsoft IIS 7.x or Exchange? Thanks.

@Gonz: Yes that was me but I added https://login.live.com in IE proxy exceptions list not trusted sites thereby bypassing EMBC proxy and filter for that site. It works that way but I still think there's an error with the filtering if I can bypass the system that way.

I keep getting this error and logging in to the EMBC portal makes no difference at all. I've attached a screenshot as it shows a certificate error with the certificate issued to EMBC when I'm trying to connect to Microsoft.

We've got our first 2008r2 DC box running alongside 2 other 2003 DC's and now I would like to change the password policy for the staff OU. Is this possible in this situation or do all the DCs need to be 2008? Thanks
