Well I'd argue it's realistic, Norway's average household net-adjusted (i.e. after taxes) disposable income per capita is over 20% higher than the UK. That is a huge difference and no amount of wishful thinking is going to transform the UK into a Scandinavian economy. I agree that increased taxes are necessary but I don't have the confidence any Government would spend this wisely and I do think we need to balance the books before we start looking at improving things.

You can't really compare Norway to countries like the UK, their model of social welfare is entirely different to ours, they have a generally more wealthy population who pay high taxes and get extremely good public services in return. They also have quite a homogeneous population compared to the UK which seems to correlate to lower crime levels. We don't have the money available to do rehabilitation in the same way and people do generally want to see perpetrators of crimes (particularly violent crimes) punished.

Because part of their punishment for violating the accepted laws of society is incarceration and denial of the normal freedoms enjoyed by those that obey the law. Voting is part of those freedoms.

What do other people do regards buying laptops for looked after children? We've been asked to buy some for our looked after students out of their pupil premium money which is fine but I want to check a couple of things: I am planning on buying a refurbished laptop for them, no point in wasting money, there is no issue with this is there? I'm thinking that we can't install a Windows OS and MS Office using school MAKs because the student won't be an employee, therefore they would have to pay for it out of the PP money as well? The laptop once bought is the property of the student and therefore the responsibility to maintain/look after it is also on the student (or more likely their guardian)? I've always found Pupil Premium money in schools to be a bit of a grey area, sometimes they aren't very clear about where it is spent etc. and are challenged by OFSTED as a result.

Having just been reading some news headlines and switching to this forum I initially read the title as 'A colourful view of the Spanish coast from ISIS' and was very confused!

Our licence for Scholaris very recently expired but despite checking with staff beforehand we had everything they wanted from it some staff have come forward urgently requiring student work that was in the MyClasses element part of it. We still have the scholaris server but I cant for the life of me seem to find where this might be stored and when you try and access it through the portal we get a 'licence expired' message which forbids access. I've asked Ergo if we can have a temporary licence but does anyone have any ideas?

I get the impression this is a guy who has been given these switches from a company and therefore if the seller is a private individual selling their own used property in the EU or UK then no VAT is payable. That is because the VAT was paid for the item when it was first bought. The safeguards are payment with a credit card so we benefit from legislation surrounding that and the option of buying new/refurbished from a network equipment supplier is that much more expensive I don't see a problem in answering an FOI request, as elsiegee has said many schools couldn't survive without eBay!

What he said, we are an academy chain. We will mainly be using them to replace Netgears that are out of warranty so there is no difference really and the 6248Ps cost a fortune new, their replacements (N3000 series) are nearly 4 grand I believe.

We've got a 100mbit on a gig bearer but we share this with one of our primaries which isn't something I'm overly fond of but I've inherited. No one to one byod yet at least!

I wanted to do a quick survey of internet connection speeds in schools. Because the poll facility doesn't allow much finesse as regards different types of schools and connections I have created an online survey, it's anonymous (I'm not trying to flog your data to market research companies!) I'll close the survey after a couple of weeks and post a link to the results here. One of my techs has just told me he thinks the network diagram on Visio I've been given might be wrong and they are managed netgears so fingers crossed! Otherwise it will be ebay time!

I'm resurrecting this thread slightly as one of our primary schools has 4 Netgear switches, a GS700 series and 3 x JGS524F , now the GS724TP is managed and we can implement VLANs on it but my question is will the unmanaged JGS switches pass VLAN traffic with their VLAN tags intact ?
