Thanks m25man that was really interesting and hit home for me as there are definitely latency issues on the network. Most of vlans seem to segregate departments which only contain normal workstations so once I've documented the structure I'll look at slowly breaking down the vlans. As for the actual break down of the vlans, could I potentially just remove the vlan on the ports and add the workstations to the default untagged vlan?

Thanks for the replys guys, I think my first task will be to document what everything does and how it does it then think about what to do next.......I'll let you know how I get on!

If you are interested, I recommend Chris Bryant's training videos along with Cisco Packet Tracer to produce the labs!!

So where I work we seem to have a lot of vlans (around 50) in a single domain the reason being to reduce broadcast traffic (so I'm told anyhow). All the switches are HP pro curves and we use IP Helper to span vlans to get DHCP addreesses. Now I'd love to get rid of as many of these as possible but before I do I thought I'd see if anyone could see any potential issues and also if anyone could offer any advice on how'd they'd go about this? Thanks

Totally agree with twin-turbo. Great foundation for pretty much any IT role, I think it would definately help your career prospects.

Hi All, I started working in a School a little while back and need some advise on whether to use Roaming profiles and or folder redirection? Currently users log on locally with a personal folder etc which obviously isnt great. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks

TLS authentication where?? You need to check your receive connectors, try turning up the logging on your default connector to Verbose and have a look through the logs: Receive connector protocol log files for the Transport service on Mailbox servers %ExchangeInstallPath%TransportRoles\Logs\Hub\ProtocolLog\SmtpReceive Receive connector protocol log files for the Mailbox Transport service on Mailbox servers %ExchangeInstallPath%TransportRoles\Logs\Mailbox\ProtocolLog\SmtpReceive Receive connector protocol log files for the Front End Transport service on Client Access servers %ExchangeInstallPath%TransportRoles\Logs\FrontEnd\ProtocolLog\SmtpReceive Also how do you do spam protection?? Do you use a edge server as maybe that's blocking mail?

The Mail flow Troubleshooter (in Toolbox) may be worth a try.

Sorry I may not be much help but is the issue only related to incoming mail i.e. is external mail working without issue? Looking at https://www.wormly.com/test_smtp_server the MX record looks ok as mail.obbc.com.au connects and trys to send a mail. Also have you run the exchange mail flow troubleshooter?

Exchange 2010 Send as permission on different domain
RobD replied to Jambo_C's topic in Enterprise Software
Hi, You may be able to use a Domain Local Security Group in the target forest, add users from your source forest to that group. Assign Send As permissions to that group. Rob -
Blocking malicious websites and anything we deem unsuitable and reporting. That's pretty much it.

Hi All, I'm looking for a new proxy server and wonder if any of you could recommend anything? Its for a standard corporate environment (not left for the school yet), roughly 600-700 users. I've used scansafe and bluecoat but wonder what else people could recommend and any rough costs if you have any?? Thanks

Thanks both for you replies, both really useful and has provided some products to investigate. Well the good news is I'm coming back into Schools so hopefully I'll be here a lot more!!

Hi All, I've been out of School IT for a while (visiting the world of the private sector) but I may be coming back into the fold soon. Since I've been out for a few years I thought I'd ask what's new and what could you do without specifically with regards to IT in school. I presume a lot is the same as standard companies i.e. a VMware (or similar) platform, DC's, file server, print server etc but what school specific IT should I take a look at? I.e. How do you allow the kids to remote in from home or how do you ghost PC's and deploy software? Or is there any educational software I should know about? Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks RobD

Hello, I'm having a few issues with power shell and migrating a bulk of users from a forest in 2003 to a forest 2007. The two forests exist and there is a full trust between them, DNS has been set up so everyone can see everyone else. The way I'm doing this is to migrate a user first using the migrate tool then the mailbox using this command: $s=get-credential # (use your AD Account) $t=get-credential # (use your CIG Account) $s=Move-mailbox -TargetDatabase "MYMAIL07SERVER\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database" -BadItemLimit:"214" -identity "[email protected]" -GlobalCatalog NEWDC.DOMAIN.local -SourceForestGlobalCatalog OLDDC.DOMAIN.local -NTAccountOU "OU=BLAH,OU=BLAH,DC=NEWDOMAIN,DC=local" -MaxThreads 8 -SourceForestCredential $s -TargetForestCredential $t Works perfectly but I want to use a csv (or text) to migrate users in bulk, so I migrated the user and entered the details into the csv file: Username, TL, And used this script: Import-CSV c:\scripts\users.csv | Get-Mailbox -Identity {$_.Username} | Move-Mailbox -TargetDatabase "MYMAIL07SERVER\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database" -GlobalCatalog NEWDC.DOMAIN.local -SourceForestGlobalCatalog OLDDC.DOMAIN.local -IgnorePolicyMatch -NTAccountOU "OU=BLAH,OU=BLAH,DC=NEWDOMAIN,DC=local" -BadItemLimit 214 -MaxThreads 10 -SourceForestCredential $SourceCredential - TargetForestCredential $TargetCredential But I keep getting the same error and have no idea what i'm doing wrong: Get-Mailbox : The operation could not be performed because object 'TL' could no t be found on domain controller 'NEWDC.DOMAIN.local '. At C:\Scripts\MultipleMBmRD.ps1:1 char:46 + Import-CSV c:\scripts\users.csv | Get-Mailbox <<<< -Identity {$_.Username} | Move-Mailbox -TargetDatabase "MYMAIL07SERVER\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database" -GlobalCatalog cigbridc02.cig.local -SourceForestGlobalCatalog bridc01.ad.broad system -IgnorePolicyMatch -NTAccountOU "OU=Blah,OU=BLAH,DC=NEWDOMAIN,DC=local" -BadItemLimit 214 -MaxThreads 10 -SourceForestC redential $SourceCredential -TargetForestCredential $TargetCredential Any help would be really appreciated, thanks.
