Just out of interest but are you running Sims or FMS from the 2003 server? if so you will need to update before the summer I believe.

UPDATE: also you do not need a vpn, at least not in 2008r2 as the user connects over the web using a specially configured remote desktop file or can simply visit a website the is pre built by installing the server role (RDWEB) and the server sends the desktop to the connecting machine, so no silly ports are required, and its very easy for the end users.

I have it on 2008r2 server but think it is also in 2003. The server when configured can create unlimited desktops for standard users to connect on to. It is a bit like connecting to a physical machine but the server creates a virtual desktop on the fly. Best of all its very stable but a bit of a pain setting up.

class teacher laptops from home is what rdp is all about. install remote desktop (was called terminal services) with the gateway role and they can access a remote desktop from home using port 443.

My primary schools use either remote desktop or home access plus. HAP+ is a project on this site, search for it.

Depending on the version of SQL you have it might have everything you need built in that can backup the databases for you. Look in the start menu on the sql server for sql management, or something like that. If you have this you can get it to do all kind of wizzy things like backing up the databases. If you have this, post back and I will give you step by step help.

Hi, When the built in windows 7 photo printing wizard works it is a great and simple tool, but I am finding it fails with some printers. Can someone recommend an alternative, preferably one that supports right click menu options. Thanks

We have been blocking sparklebox but today I have been asked to un-block it. Originally it was blocked for 2 reasons. 1) The owner had been charged with child offences 2) The toolbar seemed to be hogging way to many resources on the computer and might have had some nasty software under the hood. Have other schools started to use this website again?

MY first computer was the Amstrad cpc 464. When I was about 11 I got an Amiga 500 which I loved. I actually got through a few of them but really really wanted the Amiga 1200 which was a 32bit machine. Fondly remember playing endless hours on Rick Dangerous.

Went to visit a primary school that have been using LearnPads for about 6 Months and the feedback I got from them was outstanding. They really love them and use them constantly.

Why not signup for a google apps for education account, and see how that works for you. Yoy will then have a better idea of gapps under the hood.

You can remove services and apps from the admin pages but what I found handy was to use Google Sites to create my own landing page for the staff. As everything Google offer is web based you can copy the urls for an app and past it on your own website.

Yep, I do find Google much easier to manage.

Yep our certs will not work on W7 until I have run the updates.

Hello, I have moved a few small schools over to Google Apps for Education and as the mailboxes of the old system have always been very small I just got the users to forward any mail from one account to the other. I have been asked to move a large school where the main mailboxes all have a large amount of emails making the forwarding method a no go. Anyone got any ideas how I can forward the contents of mailboxes from RM EasyMail to Google Apps for Education mail boxes?

Got it working by installing the IIS console, which normally installs by default. Makes me wonder if something else is missing.

Just re-installed both WSUS and IIS but still the same issue. This is going to drive me bonkers.

Installed wsus which also installs IIS. WSUS is working fine and I can view all the installed IIS services on the first page of IIS in server manager but I do not get any plus sign to expand the IIS Role and so can not configuare IIS. I also do not get an IIS listed in admin tools. Any ideas

Depends what you need to accomplish. You can connect to the server desktop using RDP and do not need any virtual machines. That is how I have set it up for a few staff members. What OS? What are you trying to achieve?

Downloaded the trial version of LearnPad today learnpad.co/ and installed on to my Android tablet. It does way more than I expected and finally gives me a locked down tablet to put in primary schools. You can control all the tablets either from the website or by scanning a bar code which makes it flexible and you can create and deploy a profile / desktop based on a subject or keystage in no time. For example I had a profile based on ancient Egyptians and then within seconds had turned the tablet in to a device aimed at SEN. They also have a large app store with plenty of free educational apps that can be deployed to all devices with a click. Not much more I can say apart from WOW. NB - Why no tablet forum on this site or did I not look properly.

Personally looking at 2 simple profile using LearnPad - The Tablet Computer Designed for Education software on Android. The learnpad seems to let you lock things down, like removing the settings tabs and gives you some control over the devices from a website, although I have not used any of these yet.
