As for YHGfL...Hmmm...good when their servers don't just drop out and we are left with no internet, other than that don't have much to do with them. I get alot of hassle over their filtering system from teachers wanting to get to realistically safe sites

Thanks, just not having a great deal of experience (read none) I'm not quite sure how to do it. Just read that as I only want internal email I don't need to set an MX record. Can I set it using the following as found on the Petri IT Knowledge web site: Command Dnscmd server_name /RecordAdd zone_name computer_name A IP_address Dnscmd mail /RecordAdd mail.balby.sch mail A xx.xx.xx.75 or would it be better to go via the dns gui as the above doesnt seem to say if its forwards or backwards Sorry if these seem simple questions but we all got to start somewhere.

Just started looking at installing Zimbra fro internal email only and according to the instructions I am following I need an entry in DNS for my Ubuntu PC which is called mail.balby.sch with a static IP of xx.xx.xx.75. WE have DNS set up on our Server 2003, anyone give me some quick instructions how to add it in the DNS as never entered the DNS management before and don't really want to mess things up :-) Do I just enter a new DNS(A) record in the port forwarding area and give it the Ubunto's static address? (see I have done a little reading so far but just want to double check it with you guys first. Apparently needs an MX record as well or is this the same as adding an entry into the DNS?

Where do I change the workgroup\domain name or my Ubuntu PC. I have set it in the network settings applet but when I use the browse network feature I see 'Windows network' from which I then see our domain name and then MSHOME, in MSHOME is my Ubuntu PC. Is this just a throwback to when it was first set up or is my Ubuntu still set with MSHOME somewhere that I have not found yet. Impressed so far, just got to get it to pick up my network printer now.

Thanks, reconf of X did eventually do the trick although I had to force it to fail first by disabling 640x480, then doing the reconf again. Now it shows the correct options.

We buy Toshibas and pay for the 3yr on site warranty uplift, only works out at about £50 from our Toshiba dealer.

Right, got the desktop installed now (just used your expert suggestions) and it ran fine, got it on a static ip, can browse my windopws server and vnc to the box, but since I ran the updates that it downloaded and rebooted I only have it in 640x480 which make life a little difficult to say the least. It was at a higher resoultion when it firts installed. How can I change it? I've tried the set resolution tool on the desktop but it only offers me 640x480. Yet again your help appreciated.

Sorry, just had one of those Simpson moments Doh!! No wonder there was no desktop just installed the server version even though I had labeled the CD Desktop!! Doh! Must make future note: When burning CD's make sure you select the correct iso you dowloaded!!!Doh!! I'm blaming it on the impending OFSTED visit! Once I have it installed how do I find out its IP address or set an IP address on it as I want to try Zimbra email for school internal email. I know the server version would be less of an overhead but I want something to play with as well

I've just started looking at Ubuntu and installed it on a spare PC (installed the Desktop version) but when it boots after the install it goes to the command prompt that I can log in on (with the user I set up on install) but how do I get the desktop gui? Must be missing something stupid. Thought it would have come up automatic. Any ideas?

Never did find the repair option would work. I've usually gone through the setup and asked it to install a copy on top of the existing setup and it has integrated the old software settings into the new setup, short of a few drivers that need installing that are specific to the new motherboard. Can't remember off hand which option it is but ist a bit further on in the installation that the repair option. Sorry can't be more specific but hope it helped anyway.

If its just so they can create flash files but without the scripting knowledge try and find a download of Power Bullet Presenter, great little tool to create talking flash books, simple animated presentations etc ps its free!!!

I had that as well and when the RBC eventually replied to my calls about it they said that Google had banned them because of the multiple calls from one IP, they seem to have it sorted now (sits with fingers crossed touching all available wood!). In the meantime they redirected all requests for google to yahoo.

In the end I used the following: Export your current IP settings to a text file. Use the following command: netsh -c interface dump > c:\MySettings.txt Import your IP settings and change them, just enter the following command in a Command Prompt window (CMD.EXE): netsh -f c:\MyAnotherSettings.txt Set up two files, one with school settings, one for home with DHCP and now he just has two new icons on the desktop and selects one depending on which location he is at...sorted :D Thanks for all your suggestions.

Could do, but that would require getting involved in looking at his home internet router etc. and that would start down that long road of home support which I don't want to go down . That soulution would have probably worked though.

Just a quick question (I hope!), I have a head who requires wireless access at school and at home. Schhol requires a specific IP address but he uses DHCP at home so has a problem accessing both without altering the IP fields each time to swap. Could he just get a USB wireless adaptor so he can access it at home with DHCP but leave his inbuilt wireless settings alone for connection at school. Would have tried this but not got an adaptor spare to try. Sure someone would have come accross this situation before so I am open to any other suggestions (but I am not going to change the school settings to DHCP as this is set by the admin as he is logging on to the admin network and that is not maintained by me)

Can't offer a solution only sympathy I'm affraid as we have had that problem at one of my schools (they use office XP though and XP). Sometimes they send things to print and they just get a black box where the table or picture should be, then try it again and its just fine!

Sorry can't help with the setting up of a VPN as mine was all set up with the YHGfL who supply our broadband and its all done externally to the school somehow. As for opening ports etc, can't as the switch that controls it is owned and maintained by the council network services team and they are the ones not too interested in letting me have access accross the network from one school server to another even if I support them.

Any more ideas how to remote to other servers, pm me if necessary. Logmein blocked by our broadband web filtering service (no chance of getting them to unblock it) and VNC no go as LEA IT services will not open up the ports for me to access my other primaries servers. Have got VPN access to the servers from home but most of the calls where I would need to check the servers would be during the daytime.

I think the one day visits are more of a case of being subject specific. One of my primaries had a single day inspection but they just looked at geography. The other 'standard' ofsted visits were the three day short notice affair looking at everything, but as has been said they seem to look now to see if all the paperwork is in place rather than concentrate on an inspection of teaching standards for periods of time i.e. a whole lesson, now its usually 10-15 mins or 30 mins at most from my experience so far.

I managed 23.3 and a 34. Good find that one.

Thanks, sorted now, turned out to be the Comodo firewall, uninstalled it, rebooted, checked the connection from wifes laptop to printer, now works fine, re-installed firewall, rechecked printer connection, still working fine, all happy now, just how I wanted to spend a rainy New Years Day :-) Glad to see its not just me looking in on the forum on New Years Day. Hope to see the EduGeek stand at BETT on the friday, actually been allowed to have a day out (oops) educational career development session to do with ICT :-)
