Hi there, We are gradually moving over to cloud based technology, but we are only a primary school. The head would like to have a staff and pupil shared area which can be accessed by relevant users via their One Drive. This would be as a substitute to using the current mapped network drives locally. Does anyone know if this is possible? I am assuming that the head or me would create the main shared folder, add a couple of other administrator users just in case we move on, and then set the permissions for other users who are able to view/edit. Is there a best practice method for doing this? Would really appreciate any help as Microsoft are very hard to get hold of for even paying the office bill let alone trying to deal with technical issues.

Thank you everyone. I decided to get some ideas on cost for the Aruba 6300F L3 in 24 port and also 48 port, all non-POE. The amount they come to is well over what we have budgeted for. The 24 port one came in at around £3650 per unit and the 48 port, £5150. With the SPF transceivers coming in at around £230 each for fibre. I have only got about 10k to play with but need around three 48 port and four 24 port switches. I would rather get good quality, branded switches such as Aruba as I have worked with these before and find the terminal easy to use as I used to work on Cisco and have a CCNA. But this is only a primary school, so I need to be realistic. Does anyone think it might be worth me considering a layer 2 24 and 48 port option instead as this would bring the costs down? The school currently has a flat network, just five communal copier/printers. The school has a fibre connection for 100mbps. It comes in in one cab which serves one building, it then goes by fibre to another two cabs which serve another building and then a third building via fibre with minimal computers (under 20). Does anyone have any suggestions specific to the above? I am really thinking that Layer 2 will do the job. I can still do VLans in future.

I am looking to upgrade the network switches we have at our school during the summer break. I would like to change the network from a flat one to a layered one with VLans. I have a couple of good switches in the building: 1 x HP J9627A 1 x HP J9625A However, the school has a number of cheap ZyEXL non-managed switches (8 in total). Whoever set up the network thought that daisy chaining switches as well as patching every single network port in the building to a switch was a good idea. I don't plan on replacing all 8 of the cheap switches as I think we can cut down by only using the ports we actually need plus a 24port spare so we have some future capacity. I was thinking of getting something like a Cisco SG500-28P to act as a core switch and then buying some HP switches equivalent to the two above. Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions? This is a London based 2 form entry with VMB broadband and quite a lot of iPads/wifi devices. I am thinking that Layer 3 switches would be our best option but I am welcome to any suggestions. There are three cabs in three different buildings here all joined by fibre, so would be making use of the sfp ports rather than the the fibre media converters the school currently has. Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

They are hot swap so have powered down, re-built the RAID with the new drives. Just waiting for it to finish and I can get the OS on. Thanks for your help.

Oh ok. In that case. Do you think I would be ok to pull the plug such that I can put in the new drives? I am assuming if the old drives are used again, the RAID will re-format them anyway?

No, there was only the OS on the volume. Just thinking, if I pull the plug, maybe I could buy one of these and then just re-format them on Windows at a later stage if they ever are to be reused.

Well when I deleted the RAID, it gave me the option to erase the drives. However, that was over one week ago and six of the fourteen drives are still being erased with a progress of 91%. I just don't think I can hang on much longer. However it is erasing them, it seems to be very thorough. Just don't want to ruin the old drives if I turn off the power. And was wondering if I can do it another way with a windows PC myself?

Hi everyone, having a bit of an issue. When I deleted the old RAID over a week ago, it set the old drives to be erased. I have come back in today and most are done but there are 6 x 1tb still not erased fully. They are at about 91%. I really can't wait any longer to install the new ones. Does anyone know if it is possible to plug these drives into a standard SATA USB connector and format them from a Windows computer? Have never known it take so long. The current drives are HP 10K SAS 1TB 870794 drives. Unfortunately, once I pouplate the server with the new drives, there will be no more vacant slots for me to be able to format them using the RAID configurator after I have put in the new ones. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I only have the day today so was hoping to insert the new 2tb drives and proceed with getting the new RAID configured and Server 2019 back on the server.

I hope I won't be working here in 10 years! HP have clarified that the RAID will take the smallest size if there are different sized disks. I am going to proceed and get 8 x 2tb drives, I am then going to remove the 2 x 600gb drives and use 2 of the 1tb drives for the OS creating two seperate logical drives: 1 for the OS which can be set to mirror 1 for the storage space which can be RAID 10. Yes, that is what I got with the very helpfully suggested RAID calculator. At least it is future-proofed that way. I can't imagine we would ever need to upgrade the storage for the life of this system. It would also mean it would be useful for onsite backups.

Thank you. Makes sense. I asked HP for some clarification not long after your post. If they agree that we will end up loosing space, I will replace all of the 1tb drives with 2tbs. We have two vacant slots left, so I will also populate those with 2tb making... 8x new 2tb drives + 6 current 2tb drives + 2 x 600gb (mirror drives) for OS.

Yes, I think they were. My bad on missing that. Are you sure about only being able to use the 1TBs in one RAID 10 and the 2TBs in another RAID 10? They all seem to be in the same RAID 10 at the moment...

Thanks everyone. I believe I already have two smaller drives, so I could do these as a RAID 1, but I need to physically go in and take a look so will see if I can do that tomorrow. The automated setup was problematic when I set this server up. It wouldn't recognise server 2019 and took some hours before I could get it to accept the usb drive with the OS on. I have checked my records and this is what it has: 6 x 1tb 6 x 2tb 2 x 600gb So maybe RAID 1 for the 2 x 600 and then RAID 10 for the remainder. I am just thinking, with four slots going spare, and I am assuming once a RAID 10 is done, you can't add to it...would this be the time to order four more high capacity drives and fill this server up and then go in and re-RAID and re-install OS? Will update you all as I progress. Really appreciate the suggestions.

If anyone could give me some advice, would really appreciate it. HP are not interested saying it is a software issue so they won't offer me any support on this.

I have managed to get the C partition down to 1.91TB however, this leaves me with just under 2tb available. This is not going to be enough as on our old storage server, we are currently using 2.5tb of 5tb. It looks like I need to make the raid bigger. I am running a RAID (1+0) RAID 10. The total usable space was 7.6tb but over the RAID 10, it gave 3.8TB of usable space. I only have 4 spare slots in the server. What should I do? Put an older version of Server on that doesn't need terabytes worth of C drive space? Or buy some much larger drives to fill the remaining four slots?

Thanks for the replies everyone. Micheal is quite right, it must be to do with the assisted setup. This is one big storage server, so the whole point of it is to use as much possible raided space for the storage on the D drive. As Domino has mentioned about paging file, I tried to set it to 2 tb, but it was still not happy with that. I currently have 1705gb allocated but 2206.46gb allocated to C. If I do as you mentioned steve and do shrink desired by 10, it will successfully shrink the volume by 10mb so it is able to shrink, but there seems to be a limit on how much.

Is anyone else having bother trying to shrink the C partition in 2019 Server? Mine had a 32ish terabyte C partition. Obviously this is not suitable and I want to make a D drive out of most of that space. I was trying to shrink C down to 1gb and then realised that on the MS site, the minimum is 32gb. Tried that, then realised that you need to add an additional 4gb if you have the GUI which I do. I keep getting errors. Not really sure what the issue is now as I am giving it the recommended size it is asking for. Does anyone have any ideas? Unless my calculations are wrong.... 3912gb=3912000mb 36gb=36000mb 3912000-36000=3,876,000 - this is the size I need to shrink C by. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there, I have a month old Dell system running the latest Windows 10 1909, fully up to date. I noticed yesterday it said it had an update that required a reboot. I updated and shut down and when I attempted to boot it up later in the day, got the following screens: It failed to boot, I tried a Start-up Repair and got the following screen: I ran a CHKDSK/F/R which took over 7 hours but reported no issues. I then attempted to remove the latest update feature and got the following error: The computer has had no significant changes, just regular Windows updates. You will note that from the screenshot showing the start-up repair, there is a log. I have attached the log to this post. SrtTrail.txt I find it strange that the Windows directory is D:\Windows as it should be C:\ I have two raided SSD drives for Windows and then one 6TB data drive for D. The letters seem to have been switched which is odd. Also, in the log, I found this interesting: Does anyone have any suggestions on why this has happened and what I can do to resolve it as all of the usual things are not working.

The server now has 14 drives. 6 x 1tb 6 x 2tb 2 x 600gb Also, was I added an SSD to the controller as we had the budget so thought it made sense to use it up. I have loaded up the RAID config screen, and am thinking of going for RAID 10 (Raid 1+0) Does this seem best?

Hi there, I am confused. I have a 2016 Server with Windows 10 clients. I set up a Default App Associations XML file in our netlogon area and created a specific GPO for it named DefaultAppAssociations. Here it is: Within the XML file, I made sure that PDF documents were set to be opened in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC. You can see this here: However, when a user is first opening a PDF document, they are being presented with this... Why could this be? I have ensured that the GPO is in the correct location for the computers to be picking it up. I have run a GPReport but it doesn't seem to be applying the policy from what I can see... Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to post this detailed reply. Ok, that makes sense to me. I wonder if I should buy an M2 anyway to help with the caching? Might as well, they are not that much money. Your suggestions with the RAID make sense, but I wonder if all of this could be solved if I just buy one or two more additional drives and add them to the front of the server and use them as OS drives? If I got two 1TB drives as an example, could I not mirror them both and then use all of the-existing raid as storage space on one of the raids you have suggested above? If not, then I am tempted to go with your RAID 10 suggestion. Thanks again for your help on this.

Thank you for your help on this. This is slightly out of my depth and what with the virus outbreak, it is proving hard to get in touch with suppliers to work out the best option. So do you mean I could potentially use the M2 slot to put Windows on? We have always used Windows before and joined it as a domain controller to our main FRDC.

Hi, I am not too sure how I can check out which controller it comes with. This is what it says on the warranty page: HPE DL380 Gen10 4208 1P 16G 8SFF Svr On the original order, it said: DL 360 G10/Silver 4208/16gb/8 x 2.5 drives/P408i/50w/5yr warranty/6 x 1tb/6 x 2tb Not sure if this helps, but all of the hard disks plug into a board in the PCI expander section of the server. This board has a sticker on it which says aec-83605/hp2. I notice it also has an M.2 hdd slot on it also.
