  1. Hi there, It has been a while since I have come across any software as useful as Ranger and in particular LAN Ranger Server which enabled you to view client systems to see if they were online and if they had a user logged on. You could also send a message, capture the screen, log the station off, reboot or shutdown. Has anyone else come across similar basic software (other than Impero which is far from basic and has many other features) which will show which stations are online and who is logged into them, maybe with the option to reboot? I appreciate it would need some kind of client software to be installed on the station to report the status back. I found it so useful in the past and something like this would be really handy for vanilla setups where you don't have RMMC or Impero.
  2. Thank you. That is a pain. Might be easier to get a Displayport splitter in that case and a USB C to DP adaptor for the laptop. The DP cables for the computer are long and all cabled in behind the desk and down to the PC so not practical to be using those for a laptop connection also.
  3. Hi there, We have a user with 2 x Dell UltraSharp UD2716D monitors. They have an HP desktop connected to the monitors but would like to also use the dual monitors with a laptop they bring in. The setup as it stands is as follows: Computer graphics DP port to DP port 1 input on monitor 1. Monitor 1 DP out port to Mini DP 1 port on monitor 2. This works perfectly in daisy chain format with both monitors on and monitor 1 set to DP 1 and monitor 2 set to mDP. However, if they connect their HDMI laptop via laptop HDMI to monitor 1 HDMI (MHL1) port and then change the input on monitor one from DP to HDMI/MHL1, the image from the laptop is displayed but only on monitor 1. Monitor 2 goes blank and displays no signal. Does anyone know if it is possible to daisy chain HDMI from one UD2716D to another using the DP out to mini DP in on the second monitor?
  4. A quick update to let you know, I have users reporting this at home also, so this cannot be an issue relating to firewalls or school specific computers. I have users who use their own laptops on Chrome, Firefox and IE () all reporting the same issue, so I am quite certain now that this is an issue at the Google end.
  5. Hi, We are also getting this issue with multiple users. Ctrl + F5 seems to be the only way to fix it. The Chrome browsers they are using are all fully updated. Not sure if this is a Google issue or caching (we use LGfL). I will hang fire on contacting anyone until I see a few more posts on this thread.
  6. Thanks, we use LGfL for our broadband and they provide all user accounts which get synced with our MIS. These then get populated to both Google and Microsoft. I did wonder about machine only Azure AD but I am looking to slowly transition users away from the current Server 2016 setup and this would not be possible if I added machines only to Azure AD. Thanks again for your post. I have checked and under On-prem syn enabled, all 515 users are showing 'No'. What you are saying makes sense to me. As, in this example, I am talking about around 10 computers and a similar amount of users (just the admin department), would I be able to create new users in Azure>Users with on-prem sync enabled and work that way? The 515 users are all users at the site, but I am only interested in the admin staff which is a far smaller number of people. You mentioned it would be a complicated task of syncing the users and getting them to match up, but if there are only around 10, maybe it won't be so difficult? Or maybe I could just remove the licences from the current 10 users and make new accounts for them manually, then add the respective licences? Hybrid sounds best for this particular example. Are there any official guides on how I can link the server to Azure so when they log into a Azure AD joined device, they could access local domain resources? The idea would be to eventually migrate everything over to OneDrive and yes, exactly as you say, it is a big change for users in particular which is why I am looking to do this very gradually and start with the most competent people and get them onto a hybrid environment before weening them onto OneDrive, then the other users can follow and I will have some early adopters to help the others get the hang of things!
  7. Ahah, thank you. That makes sense, you have very good knowledge of licencing! The user accounts are actually already synced to O365 as our ISP does this for us and these are the accounts we use both for non-O365 email and for O365 along with Google for pupils. So if possible, I would need to get O365 to sync the accounts down to the server. Not sure if that is possible? The only thing binding us to the physical server really is the shared drives which are physical and on prem. You mention about enrolling the Windows 11 devices but would this not enrol them to Intune and not the local domain? Sorry if these are stupid questions, but I am quite new to this. If there are any specific courses that would help, do let me know and I will join them as I have quite a few other sites I would like to start doing this to, and this is my first.
  8. Hello, Thanks for your reply. Ideally, I would like to be able to manage things like the Windows 11 start menu which I gather I can only do with Intune linked to the device. It would also be good to make use of things like Autopilot. Our current licencing is M365 A3 for faculty and students. We also have the A1 but everyone gets those as they are the free ones. Do you think I would need to purchase additional licencing to achieve what I want?
  9. Does anyone have any experience of the licencing implications for Azure Active Directory Synchronisation? I have a 2016 server and around 10 Windows 11 and 10 stations. We already have InTune but I am assuming there would be an additional licencing cost to enable us to link and sync our 2016 server to the Intune tenancy? Hybrid is a step in the right direction for cloud for our site, and will hopefully allow us to run custom start menus on 11 via Intune as well as far better device management and MDM. Just unsure on what licences we would need other than the standard Intune one?
  10. Thanks for the clarification Steve. That makes perfect sense.
  11. Hi there, We have a staff room TV with an HDMI PC Stick attached. I think it is a Dell one with Windows installed. Can anyone recommend the best way to set this up so that I can have a deputy access it and insert the info for the day onto it? Ideally, we want just one screen, not alternating content, just nice and simple. Not sure if I should just buy her a wireless kb with integrated mouse and stick powerpoint on or if there is something which would make things easier? Thanks in advance.
  12. Hi there, I am mystified, granted I don't do this often, but I keep getting a permission error. I have downloaded the Windows 11 21H2 Administrative Templates for our 2016 server. We are about to put our first few Windows 11 stations onto the domain. See below screenshot. Left hand window is the extracted Administrative Template Files. Middle window is the %sysvol%\Policy Definitions folder. Left window is \\domain.internal\Policies\PolicyDefinitions folder. When I have attempted to copy the left hand Windows 11 templates to the middle %sysvol% Policy Definitions folder, I keep getting a Destination Folder Access Denied 'You need permission to perform this action' message. If I click on try again, I get the same error. It refuses to let me copy the new files over. However, if I do it to the far right window it takes them no problem. But I can see that the files and folder in the far right window, do not match the SysVol Policy Definitions folder. Does anyone know why these would be mismatched and also how I can get around the Access Denied problem?
  13. Thanks very much.
  14. Hi everyone, happy bank holiday. We have been having issues over the past few months accessing our ReadyNas Duo V2 NAS drives using our browsers. We can access the shares, but cannot get onto the NAS management pages to actually manage the device. The errors we get are as follows: It seems that browser technology has progressed and the NAS has not. I am quite sure we kept our NAS OS up to date, but can't even check as not able to get on. I have tried Chrome, Edge, Reload in IE mode but nothing works. I have a mac, and if I try in Safari, eventually, I can get it to load the page, but it goes no further than showing the ReadyNAS loading Dashboard image and never progresses. Has anyone had any luck at gaining access to the management web interface on these? Thanks in advance.
  15. Thanks guys for your posts, really helpful. Certainly easier in this case to use what is already out there then waste time making something myself!
  16. Thanks everyone for your help on this. Do the solutions listed allow users to log calls without having to log in? My idea with Google Forms was that anyone with the link (which I could add to shared areas) could open and immediately report their issues making it as easy as possible, just like pouncing in the corridors as @bitzncz rightly said!
  17. Hi there, Just wondering if anyone has ever used a Google Form for staff to log their ICT issues? I visit a school for a day a week and in the past, they have used a folder which inevitably goes missing. I don't think it is worth investing lots of time into finding a solution for but I was just thinking, if I set up a basic Google Form for staff to report: Name, Location, Description of Fault, Severity I would have an easy way to see each week what issues people have encountered, provided they have a working computer to log the fault. Each week I can either clear the jobs or keep them as a way of showing which jobs have come in and what I did to resolve them?
  18. Hello all, I just wanted to provide an update. Unfortunately, the school as not prepared to spend any further money on this issue - and I can't say I blame them. I think I mentioned earlier on in this thread, this was not the school's first rodeo with Microsoft related issues, having had various issues with licencing whereby they had to wait months to be able to use their 365 licences, licences which had been paid for and were not able to be used with no offer of credit. Sadly for this school, their Microsoft journey has come to an end and they will be moving fully cloud to Google. The plan moving forward is to run the server into the ground whilst using hybrid Google and once the server is toast, fully cloud. Thanks for nothing Microsoft but thank YOU to everyone who offered ideas, experience and tips on this matter
  19. Thank you for your post, that is very interesting. I didn't realise you could do an IPU from 2019 to 2019 or 2012 R2 to 2012 R2, I assumed it would be 2012R2 to 2016 or 2012R2 to 2019 etc, etc. I am going to try and arrange a meeting with the head to discuss this and see if she his happy for me to proceed. She has become, over the years, very anti-Microsoft. I have full backups, so very tempted to just do a 2012 R2 to 2012R2 as you suggest, but I suppose I had best run it past her first.
  20. Hello, thanks for the post, sorry I forgot to say, yes - it keeps telling me it already has it installed.
  21. Thanks for your post. I did have a good look through the CBS log and I kept seeing the following: So I downloaded the KB5015874 update but againwhen I manually installed, I get the following: It doesn't seem to matter which update I try and manually install, they all fail.
  22. I am glad I am not the only one who took a liking to the HP ones! There was a model before with a silver bit going across the top. It was equally as nice but has the old PS2 connector and using converters was a bind so switched to the one I have now. Thanks for the Logitech suggestions, they look quite nice.
  23. Apologies for the boring subject! I was wondering what keyboard you would consider the best? For years, my go to keyboard and mouse combination has been the HP 672647-003 black keyboard with a matching black 672552-001 mouse. I have them both at home and work and think the buttons are all in just the right places and the keyboard is nice and sturdy. We have had a few Lenovos in at work with the Lenovo Preferred Pro II USB Keyboard 4X30M86917. They seem quite ergonomically designed and with good buttons and of all of our systems at work, I quite like typing on these boards. Sadly, the new HP, DELL and some Lenovo keyboards that come shipped with systems are so cheap and thin, I can't bare to use them. What are your opinions? Are mechanical keyboards any good? I have never moved away from my trusy HP combination ans it just works well and I can type so much quicker on them, but eventually, I am not going to be able to get these anymore so I would be intersted to know what you all rate as the best.
  24. Thanks for your post. I am really tempted, but with so many erroneous responses on this server so far, I am just really worried I might do an in place upgrade and it will totally fall over. Are the chances of that high? Never had to do one before.
  25. Thank you for your post. You are quite right about the issues starting with that particular update. To be honest, the school and me for that matter, are sick and tired of the constant issues with Microsoft. We also have Office 365 licences and constantly have issues with the licences dropping off of the admin account. They are purchased via Trust Marque. Everything to do with Microsoft seems to be problems. The school have made it quite clear, they are not paying for anything related to Microsoft and I don't blame them, particularly now as you are very right, the problems began with the printer nightmare which took us months to get resolved. All of your suggestions were very helpful, but again, I am unable to proceed. If I run a DISM Cleanup Image, it reports an issue and says it was cleaned, however, after a reboot, same issue again. I have cleared the Windows Update file store, but within a few hours, it is back to the usual tricks. Even the following: DISM.EXE /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:F:\Sources\install.wim /Limit Access Which points to a Server 2012 R2 install ISO has not helped. Your suggestion of removing the KB5009624 was a very good last resort, however, as usual with Microsoft products, yet again, I am unable to proceed as apparently, it is not installed when I go to installed upates. This was showing as uninstalled before I cleared the update store and rebooted. If I download this specific update from the Update site online and try and install, it will not install and throws an error so yet again I am stuck. If you have any other suggestions, they would be greatfully recieved, but sadly, if we cannot overcome this, the head wants to move to Google Workspace for Education which is a terrible shame when the school has high performance, TMP chip enabled, i5-i7 systems from good vendors. But I just can't blame her as it it really has been problem after problem, several complaints to Microsoft and all have been ignored. It really is a shame that Microsoft doesn't have a better Education sector with people on hand to speak to schools experiencing issues. The printer nightmare situation was dire for so many schools and the support Microsoft provided was pathetic in my opinion. Over half of the schools I work with are looking to make the switch to Google and almost all have cited the printer nightmare or licencing problems as their deciding factor.
