Tbh I have taken a few of the so called R2 2008 exams and they talk about 2008 R2 and windows 7 but most of the content is really 2008 material, they have just added R2. As far of the exams go the extra things to study on are Branchcache, direct access and the fact R2 can back up to a network location etc. Oh and btw the R2 books are being released at the moment.

Yes you need the special console cable. Have a good look around as well as I'm sure I managed to get my switches for about £20 or less, you just got to watch a about 10 promising auctions at a time.

You can buy kits of Ebay or if you know what you want, buy it individually. I was patient and picked up a few switches and routers cheap. CertForums - The Certification Community has good advice on this and you will find some posts regarding what you would need ideally as well as recommendations of Ebay sellers.

You do not need to have all the roles on one server. It is good to spread them out a little if you have a fairly large network although in most cases it won't make a difference. If you had more than one domain then certain roles shouldn't be on the same server but according to what you have said, you are a single domain or you are the root domain. Also consider global catalogs when thinking about FSMO roles etc.

70-680 is a lot tougher than the likes of the Vista exam. I liked it though as it related nicely to some of the new server technology like branch cache and direct access etc. I must admit a few questions did get me thinking especially the ones asking for a step by step guide through the GUI to get to a certain function and as we know Windows 7 likes to go round the houses a bit in this respect.

You can't rename the computer when it's a DC. Maybe change your naming convention slightly to something similar. srv-1 or something.

In that case I have changed the word upgrade to migrate in your post ;-) You need to give some more details, you don't give the spec of any of the servers or how many clients you have etc etc.

You cannot upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit. You could introduce the other as a 2008 R2 domain controller though and do it that way though eg do whatever prep you need and let it replicate move fsmo roles remove old dc. Wipe old dc install 2008 R2. This is a much simplified version but you get the idea. If you wanted to start fresh you would make the R2 machine in a new domain and migrate users and computers etc over with something like ADMT.

Mdt with driver injection is more flexible for injecting drivers. The deployment features aren't as good as fog though unless you pair it with sccm but you could live with it for the flexibility. In mdt I use the driver path method and the model variable according to wmi and it works fine.

If it's applying ACLs to the files is the device formatted with NTFS? Maybe format it as FAT? Depends on the size and if your happy formatting FAT. That may or may not fix it .

I tried that yesterday it didn't want to work. I know it should of worked as the normal form tutor worked, i'm wondering if there was anywhere else I need to refresh apart from saving the pastoral structure?

Yes I was expecting the same behaviour as AM7 but was sadly disappointed. I think I am just going to assign her to the registration class (our registration course) with the normal form tutor and keep moving her as she needs to do another set. Not ideal as I don't like to keep going in and out of T6 but it's the best I can come up with at the moment.

Our heads of year do a report for each pupils main report. We use a mix of individual reports and some custom VBA for all other subjects at the moment. I am wanting to use profiles to do these hoy reports with a view to moving all subjects over eventually. Now I have everything set up as I want it and the form tutors can see the reports if I use the Pastoral Overview or in our case we have the reg groups set up as classes as we have a different reg organisation on Wed. The thing is I want the hoy to be editing the reports. They are defined as head of year under pastoral and head of dept under the registration course. I have been onto our support and they say that only curricular and pastoral managers can see and edit (but not make selections) the reports in review mode! Is this true can anyone think of a way round this? This was the last thing I was expecting and at this rate the hoy is going to end up logging on as each of the form tutors grrrr!! Help please.

You need a router or layer 3 switch. One DHCP server can handle multiple scopes for all subnets. If you have a DHCP server on one subnet ie one on each site it will only find the server in that site as it uses broadcasts to get an address and that will not go over your router/switch unless you configure IP helpers or a DHCP relay. Either way you do it your going to need a router. You could use one of the Windows server roles as a router if you want but more than likely a hardware or some kind of Linux distro on an old box would be better.

You might want to consider something from Comptia first before you go for the MS stuff. A+ may be a bit basic for you now but Server + and Network + would be good to start with. If I was training somebody who was fairly new and I wanted them to progress I think I would like them to do the A+ Server + MS 70-680 & 70-685 to give MCITP: Enterprise Desktop Support Technician. That would be the first couple of years covered, then I would be thinking Network + then maybe looking at the higher level MS MCITP such as Server Administrator.

You can only add DCs to a site the rest as I say is done through the associated subnets therefore it won't work unless you have different subnets. Source

Computers know what site they are in because of the sites associated subnet.

For those of you who didn't see the stuff on the portal they are stopping the MIDAS project and will not be offering it as a service. I haven't read all the details yet as I was only forwarded the message and there is apparently a letter attached.

I gave up with that in the end and managed to get a perl script called nitter2 to work under Linux at least. I would like to know if anyone has success with tweepy though.

Congrats. I am trying to finish of the SA but I didn't want to take it until I had sight of the R2 book for the 646 which was supposed to be out this week but now it's delayed a month grrrrrrr. I only really want to do all the labs in the book. Yes you will have to pay for the certificate unfortunately. When I originally did my MCSA you got certificates, cards, tie pins and all sorts of stuff. Just print your transcript out and explain you have done all the exams and that you are just waiting for the EA to appear.

@Irazmus do you know of any way to get the proxy to work under Windows? I have a few things I could use this for. I got it working how I wanted at home but it doesn't seem to recognise the proxy settings under Windows as from what I can tell, they are Linux env vars.
