You can use MDT to do this on a laptop. You may just need to get a third party DHCP server depending on your laptop OS. You could use static IPs but it's worth the hassle of getting DHCP going.

Never used VHDs but you are right I think they also need to be enterprise. What I was suggesting was make a virtual machine which maybe stored as a VHD disk but I did not intend you to mount it to be bootable in another copy of windows 7. Instead just use it in the virtual environment, that it was created.

When you say cascading down I think you need to look at the NTFS permissions and take ownership of them (the root folder) and all subfolders.

That's a good point. I did in my initial tests connect to the mail server using telnet and did a helo but I didn't go as far as trying an email thorough telnet.

We use the same config on other devices such as photocopiers etc so it's definitely DPM that has this issue and not the mail server.

I have exactly the same problem with DPM, it's quite common if you do a search on the net. I tried a few of th suggested fixes to do with the database but they did not work. You have identified the issue which is DPM Will not allow you to send without using authentication. I never got back to it but I was going do as Sukh suggested and use the basic SMTP function you can enable on an IIS install.

Should work fine. The only things you gain with enterprise are bit locker, applocker branch cache and direct access.

Build your images ion a virtual machine and take advantage of snap shots on the vm or look at audit mode which is an option of sysprep under windows 7.

There is no tab for the code with that driver.

What network profile has it associated itself to eg public, private etc?

Hmm have you tried deleting the Program Files folder first and/or reg entries?

If the old version is a problem you could try removing it using the Tutor console under client maintenance or something like that.

The Ricoh RPCS drivers did not allow us to put the codes for printing to the photocopier. Other authentication methods may work fine.

HAL is an issue with XP but can be worked around in most cases. Try this tool for adding loads of drivers and look at the sysprep guides as well for good advice on helping you with that "all in one" image.
