  1. We only use the internet connection (not Fronter, email, etc) and have only noticed two differences since getting 1C1N and associated upgrade to 100Mb: 1) Download speeds for programs, etc. seem much faster as they should 2) I often have to reload XFM's webpage as the connection drops (so no radio) and it never did this pre-1C1N.
  2. Me neither! Friend's daughter had a problem with her laptop the day she was due to fly to the States for a couple of months so took it there. It went from "we'll have to wipe the hard drive but it will be fixed in 2 hours", then 3 hours later "we're just fixing it now" to "it will take 10 weeks to fix". I fixed it in 3 days which included recovering her photos from the formatted HDD and waiting 2 days for a new hard drive to be delivered...
  3. I've used Recover My Files recently which again isn't free but I was impressed by. I managed to recover a load of files from a hard drive after it had been formatted by PC World.
  4. It all depends on what you intend to use it for and what it could be used for if it was in place. Our video conferencing setup was used as a Virtual teaching Observatory with the local Uni, have full class to class contact with other schools around the world, teaching of A-level Spanish for 2 pupils as well as a few meetings. At the moment I am still waiting to see what is happening with its replacement, a saga that has dragged on for over a year! There is a lot of potential with VC but also a lot of potential, as with other technologies in school, to be sold something too expensive, difficult to use, inappropriate to actual needs, etc.
  5. I'll have a listen later but I can't say I'm surprised. I've seen several stories about possible investigations into PFI deals because of the obscene profits but have yet to see anything happen. Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Although it cost £627 million to build, taxpayers will foot a total bill of £2.581 billion – four times the actual cost of the hospital.
  6. I did think of that but then again all of my training has been done at my own expense so it wouldn't make much difference. Very timely though as I had been considering doing an ITIL course.
  7. I think so - to lead a race for 69.5 laps of a 70 lap race and then come second must be soul destroying. As to Lauda et al, it's pathetic.
  8. We have Frog and I think it's really easy to maintain! Teachers can easily create their own pages with the WYSIWYG editor built in and the only issue we seem to be having is with the Frog extractor but that seems to be because of an issue with our server that will be replaced over the summer.
  9. Only advice I can offer is probably what you have heard before - photocopier salesmen are the worst sharks in sales and make sure that everything is unambiguously laid out in a contract document.
  10. Been a few times (admittedly not recently) and what I had was good value I thought. Have to remember that. How far down?
  11. I can recommend the Hardy & Hanson's pub next to Morrisons and the chip shop on Aylestone Road is also quite good I think - a lot of Tigers fans, players and staff go there and I can't imagine Richard Cockerill eating iffy fish & chips!

  14. So everyone will be gone by October 21st? Great. First time in ages my birthday has been on a Saturday and everyone will be gone the day before...
  15. Sorry if this is not the right place to post this but I have two spare tickets for the Aviva Premiership final between Leicester Tigers & Saracens. If anyone's interested then send me a PM. Date: Saturday 28 May 2011 Venue: Twickenham Seats: Lower East stand, block L28, Row 35 seats 285 & 286. Price: £92 for the pair (face value).
  16. For software have a look at RM's basement as well: The Basement: Amazing student hardware & software prices
  17. Wow! I thought that was only us. The tech here uses Chrome and he had exactly the same issue last week.
  18. They say they want you to leave the car at home when they are raising "green taxes" but the simple fact is that motorists are a cash cow so they can't afford people to do so. As others have said, public transport outside of London is a joke. Travel by car can be safer, more convenient, cheaper, cleaner, quicker, etc.
  19. Depends who is actually doing the recruiting, even some big companies will get external agencies in once the CVs have been sent to the company themselves (Vodafone did this with Reed, even for some reasonably low internal jobs!) and they may not understand the terminology. I had to explain what an MCSE & MCSA were to the last agency I went to - sneakily applied for the same job through two different agencies and the one that didn't understand got me an interview from which I was offered the job towards the top of the advertised salary band. The other said I didn't meet all of the prospective employers requirements!
  20. One stick to beat them with is exams. I was told by our Exams Officer some years ago that exam boards won't accept computer failure as an excuse for not submitting work. Do you have a Languages department? Where do they store the files form their oral recordings? What happens when the exam board says the files on CD are corrupted and Languages have accidentally deleted that file? The same goes for PE, Drama, Music, etc. so if you trust them speak to your Exams Officer or do a bit of research on the websites of the main exam boards.
  21. Not for the website itself but I have produced one for the Parental Engagement Portal that parents access via the website.
  22. Also, make sure that the version of Backup Exec didn't come with the device itself as a QuickStart edition. If that was the case then you can't add agents to backup other remote servers, you need to purchase a licence for the full version first. This will obviously add costs but you can at least then ensure that you get the latest versions of everything.
  23. Magnum PI isn't it? Do you plan on growing an appropriate moustache or do you already have one?
