Hi Has anyone used a company called DTS (Digital Technology Solutions). According to their spiel they are a reseller for Olivetti who are looking to get into the education market. Anyone had any dealings with them who could recommend them?

I did read a review once that looked at different software for permanently deleting data from hard-drives. They also included 'hammer' and 'industrial sander' as alternatives. The only one that made the drives completely unreadable even using forensic analysis was the sander, as you just completely scratch off the magnetic layer - no physical medium left to hold data! Never tried it, mind.

Just to take a completely different tack: if all you want is to run one Admin PC off a Curriculum switch you could try VLANs (if you have managed switches! - or can swap one into that cabinet) I had one cabinet that until recently had only Curriculum links, but now needed a couple of Admin points. Set up two VLANs on the switch, ports 1-20 for Curriculum on VLAN 1, ports 21-24 for Admin on VLAN 2, configure the Uplink to VLAN 1 - Untagged, VLAN 2 Tagged (with the same at the other end of the Uplink) and we have Admin connections sharing the 'Curriculum' link. Geoff, is there anything to know about setting up the Trust relationship? What if you have two domains that were set up independently and have never been 'related' to each other, does that matter?

Hi. I'm a bit confused as to what you have connected these PCs to - does your switch support Gigabit? If so, why should two Gigabit network ports both set to Auto default to 100Mb? Check you cabling.* Have you configured anything to a fixed speed? There is an oddity when you fix one end to 100Full-duplex and set the other to Auto: Auto responds to a fixed speed by matching the speed, but setting itself to Half-duplex, so ends up as 100Half-Duplex - a 'Duplex mis-match' with one talking and listening simultaneously, the other expecting to talk without interruption, then listen. * Not using cable splitters are you? OK I agree with everyone so far, that you need to change the printer's Properties on the server, which the PC picks up when it installs. But which properties? As well as 'General' tab|Printing Preferences..., there is often an 'Advanced' tab|Printing Defaults... . I think this is where your clients pick up their settings. If in doubt, change both!! Does anyone have a neat way of changing settings once some users have had the wrong paper size installed?

We have two main buildings, each with a HP5308 as a core switch. We put OM3 between these buildings as that's where any future 10Gb would go. Shame the 5308's aren't due a 10Gb module! Have a look at HP's web-site for the throughput on switches. The 5400's are outrageously faster than the 5308's (we only bought ours 2 years ago). There may also be a limit PER MODULE, which is why 5308's do 4 x 1G-T, and 4 x 1G-SX modules - that guarantees 1Gb throughput per server/link. Any one out there use Single-Mode fibre? [There. First post on edugeek. Not too painful, I hope.]
