  1. Have you rebooted? its quite an intensive program, the startup sometimes goes wonky. What does task manager say?
  2. only thing you should need to do is reiterate your helpdesk policies, how they contact you, why they contact you, what details they need to give that sort of thing. OFSTED couldn't care less about my work until a projector blew up during a lesson , all of a sudden they were very interested in my work. Teacher did the right thing, took a minute to email the helpdesk, gave relevant detail so i attended with spare projector in hand and setup while the teacher delivered plan b. Got us good marks in the end.
  3. If the managed services company is a MS partner then your qualifciations will help them achieve the partnership. Find out how you can associate your mcp id with them and get them to fund it. There are some good hyper v exams out there, and they lead to again to an MCITP , MCITP:VA EDA is between the old MCDST and MCSA its how to get 7 working properly in a domain environment. the 680 exam is universally used and the 686 exam is to be honest pretty fun!.
  4. Server administrator is probably more suited to your job, EA is looking after multiple domains. After the SA I'd look at the EDA rather than EA. As a member of facultly at a school you may be able to get 50% discount and I think a free resit under the ms student policy
  5. google software restriction policy.
  6. No we dont , largely because if you need a IT tech on hand for a lesson then you either have a computer network that is incapable or a teacher that is incapable.
  7. nice thing about a ts farm using session broker is you can use any old tat as long as your set the weightings properly. Theres not harm in running more than one ts vm on a node but it is worthwhile making sure you have at least 2 physical servers running the vm's.
  8. i use dpm to backup my hyper v virtual machines.
  9. its all about playing the odds, likelyhood of distaster x impact of disaster. Having one physical and one virtual dc is good sense, having antivirus on the physical is a waste, it should be on a singular vm for so it cna be recovered easily and moved between servers but it doens't need to be available for disaster recovery. File servers are fine virtual, but maybe have them use dfs to the physical dc so you have a live copy of the data and can change dfs to point to the dc is needed. Then look at things like dns, dhcp, make sure they're in more than one place and that a singular fault/event wont take them out.
  10. 3 servers, if one fails the other 2 will work.
  11. i'd keep the 3 vm hosts and just get something cheap to run as a dc, Use as many dc's as you need to load balance logons, but its worthwhile having at least one physical and one virtual in case of distaster recovery. prehaps use the physical dc as a backup server as well.
  12. Run at least one dc, even if its a nackered old box. If your vm infrastructure goes down you'll need a dc to recover!.
  13. you'll probably end up with a ton of generators powering the bits you need, but very little hope of getting anything significant done!
  14. yup, a ps script to move vms in a cluster is easy peasy. So you could adapt it to live migrate all your critical vms to one node.
  15. Hyper-V: Will My Computer Run Hyper-V? Detecting Intel VT and AMD-V - Taylor Brown's Blog - Site Home - MSDN Blogs will tell you if your board is capable. Also worth checking the services to make sure theyre running, I'm not sure if they're set to manual initally. G5 instructions...Now, to fix the issue: Reboot your server and go into the BIOS by pressing F9. Go to "Advanced options > Processor Options" and enable these two sub-options: "No-Excecute Memory Protection" and "Intel® Virtualization Technology" Save with F10.
  16. it shuts down and closes the vms as per their settings, Which are either turn off, save or shutdown. Neater way is to ask the ups to execute a ps script. Our servers are all on different up's so as soon as any one has aproblem it executes a script which closes down virtual machines first, then physical machines, leaving the most important ones till last.
  17. There ins't a generic guide to this sort of thing, The chances are your logon scripts aren't working. investigate where the things that are missing come from.
  18. g3's. Our sata disks are 160gb i think, so 160*4 = 640 could have gone for the extra one though as the chassis can hold 6.
  19. sata no.. sas yes.... sata @ 10k is a little too slow . i used 2 x hp dl140's and a 2950 as a san.
  20. synacks on the right route there, Only think i would suggest is not using disk2vhd but find a spare desktop and put scvmm on it, much more reliable and useful for creating and managing virtual machines.free for the first 180 days, then a rebuild ;O). If it helps I was going to use a 2950 as a san, 5 15k sas disks with a spare should be good enough for most small scale virtual setups, the san will be the bnit that really costs the money so it might be worth buying 2 2950's as sans and using 4 cheapo nodes rather than spending a fortune on an enterprise san.
  21. Do it, easy as pie. I would use hyper v though. 2 cluster nodes with processor and ram available, one san with loads of disks. Stick starwind on the san so it can be used as an iscsi target (only by 2 clients tho...otherwise think windows storage server) and your away. Virtualise your existing setup and then create new vm's as you need them to migrate services. if your using w2k8 r2 enterprise you'll be entitled to run 4 virtual machines per node. Best of it is because servers need either grunt or disks you can buy them second hand from forums sponsers, I got my nodes this summer for £500 each and paid a little more for my san. Worth thinking about your next move too, if you expand will you replicate what you already have so you have 2 sans or will you want to add extra nodes into your cluster.
  22. a vm can only be on one host at a time, if you use clustering then you can either failover manually without loss of service or if a host fails the other will restart the vm's on it. You can setup rules as to what happens when, so if you have non production servers they may not need to failover to leave room for other servers. Vmm is a way of managing the vm's, it comes on a 180 day trial you'll prob only need it for setting up your cluster. virtual boy explains here http://virtualboytv.com/servers.aspx
  23. Best thing to do is buy new hardware and migrate over the roles as and when you can. Might eb worthwhile looking at virtualisation , buy one or 2 decent servers and virtualise your existing one.
  24. if the kids dont enroll they wont show up properly in the courses, things like reporting will goto pot. Best thing is to let them come in as guests but enroll themselves or be enrolled in courses they need to take part in
  25. iis or apache?
