What sort of error are they getting ? I have just tried one of the spares we have, its getting a proxy error. I wanted to use one as a quick test on something.. But am unsure if its the dongle or the laptop we are using isnt setup for them Im assuming its got the proxy info applied to the DHCP server on the 4g dongle. I cant even get access to the admin menu on the 4g dongle even after a reset which is weird

Smoothwall Gateway going down
2097 replied to Benjaminbl12's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Do you have any machines that have direct internet access ? When smoothwall goes down try a directly connected internet machine and see if the internet still works. It could be a ddos attack as the free accounts available online for "testing" ddos normally only allow short DDOS intervals.- 26 replies

Do you have any literature on what you purchased. We currently have a 100mbit BT with DDOS protection and we pay for smooth wall filtering. Be very nice to get all that under one package and a lot cheaper ! I assume Aspire have DDOS protection on their nodes.

SmoothWall - Does it Block Google keyword searches ?
2097 replied to 2097's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
My test machine was exempt from the HTTPS decrypt .. Sorted now . We do have a issue though In one of our daily reports it shows what a kid typed in, and it was blocked and listed in the report as a "personal Weapon". 2 hours later by the same pupil a slightly different phrase was inputted, seems it was blocked and categorized as a "Personal Weapon" like the previous but not listed in the daily report. It only shows up if i run a manual report for the pupil. Any one else had this problem ? -
Quick question , Does Smooth wall block google searches if they contain keywords that are not allowed ? I always assumed it did because it pops up in my filter report and puts it in a category ( I.e. personal weapons) I have tried some risky terms ( How to kill someone and get away with it ) but it doesnt bring up a block page. Obviously the results are filterd using google search and i imagine any of the pages that i click on will be blocked. I just always assumed it blocked it before it even got to the results.

ABTutor V9 - Disconnecting clients

I think my meraki switchs dont like Cross VLAN WOl -
lucky we are not migrating any mailbox yet i just wanted team implementation to work better , which now it does. How have other schools done this ? surely im not the only one on hybrid with a spam filter.
-
OK think i figured it out thanks to you and your comments on the send connector. Removed the default send connectors on exchange online - Created a new one , pointed it to GFI port 25 onsite - Removed the need for TLS encryption. On GFI IIS SMTP , added an allowed relay "Outlook.com" Inside GFI , i could then see all the emails coming in . Had to modify the settings for header verification. Once this is done emails and calendar setup now work ( i assume calendars wasn't working because it couldn't send the emails out ? ) Now i just need to do it the other way ... Internal and external to O365 accounts
-
regarding the connectors , it does look like its forwarding emails to onsite port 25 ( which all emails do ) But For o365 to internal emails i am getting this error Reason: [{LED=450 4.4.317 Cannot connect to remote server [Message=451 5.7.3 STARTTLS is required to send mail] [LastAttemptedServerName=mail.MAILSERVER.org.uk] Im assuming this is because its trying to send emails to our on premise via port 25 .. Which is our GFI spam filter. Any way around this ?
-
Started to Deploy Full hybrid setup for O365 due to more and more people using Teams and i imagine eventually we will have to go "Full" O365. I ran the full setup and it didn't give me no errors at all. But ! i do have problems 1.) Any user with an exchange online mailbox cannot email internal on-premises mailboxes . It gets stuck in pending. Non-internal users it does use Microsoft's own servers and it works fine. 2.) This was done for teams , but seemed to have buggered it up even more . Teams will now not save the calendar meeting to their calendar. They can still see their on-premises calendar though. With regards to the emails , Looks like online exchange is trying to send internal emails via port 25 to our domain name. The problem being we do have a SMTP spam filter ( GFI ) on port 25. Has any one set this up without a Internet facing internal exchange ?

[2004, 20h1] 2004 - Windows Security Update - Long time to install.
2097 posted a topic in Windows 10
Has any one else installed the latest 2004 feature pack and noticed an update after installing it taking a very long time to install ? This seems to have only affected our 2004 machines, and it must be a security update as thats the only updates i have set to install automatically. This update is taking around 15 minutes to install ! at bootup. Im afraid to update all my other machines lol. -
Just found this post after having the same problem with visualizer software called "Lite array" Worked great and was able to add it to the installation bat. A Lot ! better than using an encrypted VBE which invokes the "Run as" command. Many thanks !

[1909, ou] Start Menu Layout not applying for existing profiles
2097 replied to db062995's topic in Windows 10
Do you delete profiles at logoff ? maybe its using the cached profile -
In the end we just use PrinterMapper with AD Groups Seemed to be the most reliable , haven't had any problems since doing this.
-
That being said it actually happened to me also when i upgraded to 2004 and logged on for the first time. Local profile - Admin machine so everything is available
-
Also have had this problem , around 4 times reported in the last 6 weeks. A System reboot solves the issue ( we delete profiles at logoff). I did manage to trace it back to Windows Store trying to update some bits on one machine Do you block windows store from being used ? if So i also have now blocked windows store from installing updates. I also heard disabling the Appreadiness service solves it, But ! didnt want to go that far. Btw this happens in both 1909 and 2004
-
I think as suggested in this post the main problem here is roaming profiles. We also use them and it caused lots of issues before we started using "Printer Mapper"
-
Also had lots of problems so switched to "Printer Mapper" Printer Mapper isnt without its issues though . I found using net bios names a little hit and miss with mapping. Printer Mapper is 100% reliable though using AD groups .

ABTutor V9 - Disconnecting clients
2097 replied to Netwacky87's topic in Network and Classroom Management
We have had the following issues Original v9 was unusable without a SSD They then changed something and it sorted that out , and it mostly works ( we also now use SSD's) problem i am having still is... If a machine is left on for more than a few days, It will show offline ( we have some machines on constant for VPN/Remote desktop) Also the server software , Starts to slow down randomly.. It then causes the AB teacher software to crash. I have to reboot the 2019 server to get it working ok again. Another sad thing is with it being server based i cant now turn the machines on with WOL , but i suppose you could say thats the limitation of my meraki switches . With v7 because it was non server based the teacher could turn on their classroom machines because they were on the same vlan. On the plus side.. The management of v9 Groups / Users / classrooms is SOO much better than v7 Love the fact they just use their AD usernames to login and you can assign a class that way another thing i like is as we use RDS , it shows all sessions on them servers. Im pretty sure in v7 it just showed a blank login screen ! We have just been sent the latest beta 9.3.3. . Hopefully it solves the crashing issue ( which is my main problem as it seems quite random) -
I also turned off fast user switch . Instead i added the "Sign off" button to the lock screen as shown in the link above. Windows 10 with a SSD logs on so quickly it doesn't seem to matter.
-
Thanks for that, Do i need to adjust all users in AD to use the new UPN suffix for Office365 to pick this up. Also if this is the case, i assume all new users will need to be created using the new UPN. May have to script it to check every few days for any stragglers that are added throughout the year.

You could even use the Built in remote support Within Windows Dont even need additional software then
