Don't set Google DNS on clients anywhere, they need your domain DNS so they can resolve domain devices. On your DC, set the usual DNS on the network adapter (i.e. your DCs), then in DNS Management, right click on the DNS server, go to Properties, go to the Forwarders tab and add 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 in there. Works a treat there any time my ISP (thankfully no longer RM) has DNS issues, I reorder the list there so Google are at the top. Most of the time I forget to reorder it back. Works a charm.

God yes. I also can't believe you've got by without it. I don't know how you'd administer a web filter without it. Web Developer tools in browsers are also very handy - F12 in FF & IE, think it's an extension in the Chrome Store. Handy when it turns out a random JS file is being blocked because of a keyword.

If, alternatively, someone can tell me how I might wrangle Windows into letting me have this arrangement from a GPU--because as far as I can tell, it's either all-cloned or all-extended--that'd be even better.

Another for Lanschool here, because all we wanted was the classroom management - Impero and NetSupport were both too much product for us. LanSchool was much more competitively priced, no ongoing support if you don't want it as @round2it says, easy for us to install and configure (GPO!) and simple for teachers to use. You can lock screens, blacklist/whitelist applications and websites, view & control machines, send out surveys and questions... everything you need. Well worth trialling. One teacher found a good use for the questions mechanism: he'd send out "do you need help?", and to anyone who answered yes, "do you want me to come over?", and that way he could saunter over and assist them without them having to be embarassed about raising their hand and asking for help in front of all their friends.

Any OEM sticker will suffice, yes. Win8.1 Home is usually the cheapest atm.

I don't know if we're unlucky, that all the splitters we buy happen to be made by the same shoddy OEM, or if it's somehow a product fundamentally prone to breaking, but HDMI splitters here seem to have the staying power of a paper hat in a rainstorm. We've had these in the past, and others of a similar design, and after a few months they either stop powering on or stop splitting the signal (i.e. only one output works). Anyone found any that are actually up to the job for more than fifteen minutes, and aren't ludicrously expensive?

Cores > clock speed for virtual hosts, within reason, so AMD Opteron processors can be a good fit... although they're probably too far behind Xeons now to really be worth it. Gobs and gobs of RAM; both my hosts are at 72GB each now, running about a dozen servers between them. Lots of NICs, but @hallb15, you don't need to assign them individually; in Hyper-V (2008R2), you create Virtual Networks assigned to a network adapter, and then assign VMs to those virtual networks. My hosts have 8 network ports each: I've set one up as host access, cabled two directly between the hosts for cluster heartbeat and live migrations respectively, and the remaining five are teamed into a three-port team and a two-port. Domain-only VMs are assigned to the former, Web-facing VMs to the latter, so that if any web facing server was attacked and the network bandwidth saturated, it wouldn't affect the domain VMs. That was the advice I read at the time, anyway... don't know if I'd bother with that now for the sake of the MIS server and Home Access Plus. It made sense when I thought I'd virtualise Exchange, but then 365 happened

Kingsman: The Secret Service... utterly, utterly brilliant. Best film I've seen since Wolf of Wall Street. It is quite literally James Bond as done by the Kick-Ass team - both director and graphic novelist. The direction of the action sequences is different - a lot of speeding up and slowing down, like 300 but not taken to such ludicrous extremes - but it works really well and helps you keep track of what's happening. Funny, fantastically casted & acted, action packed, interesting. Loved it. I do think we're past Peak Samuel L Jackson now, though. He's gotten to the point where he's just playing himself in films.

Your firewall may only be allowing traffic out from 10.xxx.56.xxx; you may need to tweak it to allow the full range of subnet traffic. When we VLANned, and moved everything sideways by one subnet (10.xxx.176.0/20 to 10.xxx.192.0/20) I had to get the firewall rule tweaked to allow traffic from the broader address segment.
