Just a quickie, my xbox 360 died after 3 years 3 months. After talking to trading standards, they say I have a case for free repair or refund. I bought it from Eplay, which went into administration in 2007, so I have been advised to claim against the credit card company. Just thought that this might be of use to others, also I will post when I get an answer.

Everything that is wrong with the justice system/

Reasonable force is a very recent idea. My idea of reasonable force when in danger is anything that allows me to walk away from said scum bag in one piece. Criminals volunteer for injury when they attack someone. The poor bugger on the receiving end does not have that choice. As an aside the local rag ran a piece on the terrible loss of a father due to a bad batch of smack doing the rounds. Beggars belief. -

I think its pretty much never ok to stab someone in self defence in this country, like its not ok to shoot people with guns no matter what. The problem being that the police are not there to protect you as a citizen, they are only there to deter crime and to mop up afterwards. It is every citizens duty to protect themselves and their loved ones from harm using any force necessary, it is a very recent development where the populace are constantly being told that they should not defend themselves, or that they should be measured in their response. I am not talking about beating up criminals, but of the fact that when you are threatened the only thing you should have to worry about is making sure that you are safe and that the bad guy goes away. -
Company director arrested for attempted murder after rescuing son being beaten by yobs | Mail Online If you're in England and you fend off multiple assailants at your home with a letter opener, you'll be charged with attempted murder. (fark tag) A company director has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after confronting a gang of yobs who were attacking his stepson. Colin Philpott, 58, allegedly stabbed a 16-year-old in the chest during the incident in the front garden of his £500,000 Tudor-style house. He had awoken late on Friday night to discover stepson Alex Lee being beaten by the group of teenagers. Read more: Company director arrested for attempted murder after rescuing son being beaten by yobs | Mail Online Mr Lee, 25, had gone outside to stop the gang from vandalising Mr Philpott’s Jaguar car. Mr Lee was said to have then been punched and kicked in the head, suffering a broken nose and concussion for which he needed hospital treatment. Speaking after his release on bail, his stepfather Mr Philpott, who owns an escalator cleaning company, described how he had gone downstairs to find the gang on the doorstep. 'I was asleep and I awoke to hear a noise outside. When I appeared at the door I was set upon by them, as a result of which one of the youths received several stab wounds,' he said 'My wife appeared and I asked her to call the police and the ambulance service. They arrived shortly afterwards and I was arrested. 'It was traumatic but I was very well treated by the police. I have to return to the police station in September. 'At the moment I am not too worried about it but has been difficult, particularly for my wife, I must say.' He went on to claim his Jaguar had been vandalised on a number of occasions and youths often congregated in the area. Mr Philpott's wife Susanne, 51, had earlier described how her husband had rushed out to defend her son with a letter-opener he had grabbed from a shelf. It was then that the teenager was allegedly stabbed five times. He was taken to hospital and was last night said to be stable. When police arrived at the five-bedroom house in Crowthorne, Berkshire, Mr Philpott was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Five youths, aged 16 and 17, were arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage. Mrs Philpott said: ‘My son and I came out at about 11pm after hearing a bang and we saw two young guys outside our house. ‘They returned 15 minutes later – with three others – and all were visibly drunk. I took a digital camera and told them that if they vandalised anything else I’d take pictures as evidence. ‘One said that he would kill me and burn down my house. I was terrified and when Alex tried to calm him down, the other four got worked up and they all attacked him. Alex ended up on the ground with all five of them on him, kicking him in the head and stomach. I was so frightened for him that I screamed for Colin, who was in bed. ‘He came running out – still barefoot and half asleep – and saw the mess Alex was in so ran back into the house. He grabbed the first thing he saw, which was a letter-opener, and confronted the boys. ‘They attacked Colin and I saw one stumble into the road as Colin screamed for me to call the police. When the police arrived and then arrested Colin, I was gob-smacked. ‘It was heartbreaking to see him handcuffed and carted off like a common criminal. He is a hardworking, honest family man and was only trying to protect us.’ The mother of two, who works as a training consultant, said the quiet neighbourhood had been blighted by teenagers attacking cars and defacing gardens for several months. The bizarre death of Ronald Opus-Fiction! snopes.com: Ronald Opus Suicide Origins: This Falling man amazing tale appeared on the Internet in August 1994. Prized both for the entertaining logic problem it presents as well as the morally just surprise ending, even years later it remains a cyber-favorite and continues to be forwarded to ever-widening circles of netizens. A story this good should be true. Alas, it's not. There never was a suicidal Ronald Opus, a feuding, shotgun-wielding older couple, or an increasingly confused medical examiner trying to get to the bottom of things. But there is some truth to it, for there is a Don Harper Mills, and he did tell this very story at a meeting of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. Here's how Mills explained his involvement with the story in a 1997 interview: I made up the story in 1987 to present at the meeting, for entertainment and to illustrate how if you alter a few small facts you greatly alter the legal consequences. In 1994 someone copied it on to the Internet. I was told it had already garnered 200,000 enquiries on the Net. In the past two years I've had around 400 telephone calls about it - librarians, journalists, law students, even law professors wanting to incorporate it into text books. It was hypothetical; just a story made up to illustrate a point. It's hard to imagine anyone at that 1987 meeting took it for anything else. How did a 1987 illustrative anecdote morph into 1994's believed-to-be-true story? We'll likely never know. How did Dr. Mills come to concoct such a tale? As he said in a 1997 interview, "Some of it I wrote out, and some of it I invented as I went along." Ronald Opus never lived. And his death will never die. In 1998 we began seeing versions attributed "A true story from Associated Press, by Kurt Westervelt." If that venerable wire service employs a writer by that name, we've yet to see anything under his byline. As for AP itself having run the Opus story, no, it never did. Barbara "levity longevity" Mikkelson Sightings: This amusing hypothetical case showed up in the 16 January 1998 episode of the TV series Homicide and is also said to have been mentioned in an episode of the TV show Law & Order, but in the latter case District Attorney Ben Stone merely offered a hypothetical example of a man who jumped off the Empire State Building because he wanted a ham sandwich and was shot on the way down by someone who thought he was committing suicide. A 1998 episode of the Australian TV show Murder Call also featured this legend, and it pops up early in the 1999 film Magnolia. Last updated: 20 January 2007

Suspended teachers assumed guilty Barry Sheerman MP Mr Sheerman said some of the allegations were 'shocking' Teachers in England accused of misconduct should always be presumed innocent until proven guilty, MPs say. A report by the Children, Schools and Families Committee said too many teachers were suspended needlessly and some have had their careers ruined. The MPs said they were "shocked" that the government allowed teachers to be barred from contact with colleagues. Officials said the the government would consider the report carefully, but added most cases were resolved quickly. It is "unsatisfactory", the committee said, that no data was collected on how many teachers went on to be charged with any offence after being suspended. Teaching unions say just 5% of allegations result in a charge of misconduct or a conviction. The committee said head teachers were referring too many incidents to the local authority to investigate, leading to prolonged inquiries which could have been dealt with more quickly in school. It recommended the number of allegations referred to local authorities and leading to a police investigation should be collected, as well as the number of allegations leading to suspension. Outcomes should be recorded, including whether there were any charges or a dismissal. In addition, schools should themselves investigate whether suspensions were justified, MPs said. And the creative options, the control over how the shot is taken, ability to take instant photos, the ability to take 6fps @ 15MP, the fine tuning, the ability to shoot in raw, the ability of tuning the image in adobe image raw before it even gets near photoshop. And loads more

One thing that bugs the hell out of me is people who insist on comparing their £250 point and shoot camera with my £2500 kit and saying that the pictures are kind of the same. These are the same people who just don't notice iso noise. Who just don't understand the relationship between f-stops, focal length & depth of field. Nor the way a lens will distort perspective at different focal lengths. They rarely even notice the type of light they are shooting. They really have no Idea why I wasted £200 on a dedicated flash and £20 on a defuser. I can go on. But I feel better now.

Google uses complete copies of the internet on its servers (minus files such as photos, music, video) last time I heard it was around 20 TB in size. When you think about it, 20 TB is a hell of a lot of text.

I find that most of our "bad" kids behave the way they do because of their home life. Others get dragged along because lets face it there is very little that can actually be done to them as way of unpleasant punishment. If the class did act in that way, it would take a strong person to be able to cope and bring them back in line. Looks like a pretty clear cut case of lack of duty of care. I still remember what we used to do to some teachers at school, once discipline has failed, bad behaviour spirals rapidly out of control and ends up with children pushing the boundaries ever harder. Sad all round really.

Anyone remember the series Sledgehammer form the mid 80's? Absolutely bonkers cop comedy with a politically incorrect main character, I just watched the first episode of the second season. It took me right back to my misspent youth. Dori: Oh, Sledge, you don't honestly believe the networks are trying to turn people into mindless automotons, do you? Sledge Hammer: Haven't you ever seen Matlock? Dori: Sorry to interrupt you, Captain. Sledge Hammer: Just wanted to cheer you up. Captain Trunk: That's impossible. This is the worst day of my life. Sledge Hammer: Now you see right there, you're wrong. You've said many times that the worst day of your life was the day I joined the force. [Trunk looks at Hammer] Sledge Hammer: Now you feel better? Captain Trunk: Yes. Captain Trunk: Hammer, I'm amazed that you were able to hold out against their brainwashing. Sledge Hammer: Well, it was easy, sir. I simply thought about one thing. Captain Trunk: What was that? Sledge Hammer: Well, who's always close to my side? Someone I'm afraid I've been neglecting lately. Someone for whom I've never been able to express my true feelings. [Dori blushes and smiles as Hammer looks at her] Sledge Hammer: Someone who's beautiful. Sleek. Attractive. I think it's obvious who I'm talking about, sir. Dori: Oh, Sledge, stop! Sledge Hammer: [Pulls out gun] My gun.
