  1. By the power of cardboard and sticky tape that might work
  2. You'll be sitting behind emf so you'll benefit from the pretty good filtering that does/did do so that's a good thing ™. If the majority of your mail is internal between people then you will save on internet bandwidth as it won't leave the site. It would be worth considering the bandwidth implications of people accessing it from home as to whether your internet line is OK to handle that (but if you're hosting your own website I would say yes). All in all to me it would be a good thing, hosting your own mail/vle/site you can bring in simplified sign on amongst other nice things and integrate etc. Downsides I suppose, you're responsible for backing it up wheres at the moment you can blame EMBC for that; and you're also responsible for the uptime and general look after of the system, something else you can fob off on EMBC for the moment. That said, on balance I'd host internally simply because in my days we had nothing but problems with EMBC and whilst I'm sure it's improved by now we were looking to self host before I left the school.
  3. This sounds very similar to the charity I am working with to do similar. We should perhaps have a chat at some point to see whether we can help each other.
  4. Hey, I think I have 2 x 256MB DDR sticks, they are 256's but I'm not sure if its DDR1 or DDR2. Remind me tomorrow evening when I get home (away this evening) and I'll have a nose.
  5. Looks fine to me.
  6. Donated is such a strong word Pfft, you always do so well Do I get points for trying to scrounge from the scrounger who scrounged from the scrounger? (or points for writing that)
  7. Hi there, I would strongly suggest you have them use their 'own' account to log onto the system. Another reason I guess would be the 'default' user would need access to the sims drive which again if a student landed on there would ring alarm bells for me. There's a good thread here started by dhicks talking about speccing up terminal servers with various opinions from different people but you will not get 120 concurrent people on that single server especially (and I really wouldn't do this) if it's the SIMS server.
  8. Hi, Would recommend you don't go down the route of "default user" as you're in effect asking for it, especially if an enterprising student fires an rdp session internally plus if staff start saving stuff in Office it'll be confusing for them to then find it later. Set the TS up with a separate TS Profile etc so it doesn't interfere with your normal activities. How many users are you looking to cater for concurrently? And I would seriously suggest you do not use your SIMS server for this.
  9. If two users run the same report (not at the same time) does it take longer for one than the other? Is it a massive report? Check the cpu/memory situation on your SIMS server to see if its getting a raw deal.
  10. I wouldn't bother hosting joomla internally, if it had been a moodle I'd have said that for the AD auth etc. For joomla I'm assuming as a primary you don't have a massive internet connection upstream, losing this to casual website visitors probably isn't what you want whereas with a moodle it's less of a problem as the majority of visitors are internal.

  13. It's a good idea, pleased you mentioned the VPN over something like FTP! How much bandwidth do you have available to make this happen? Also, if its a second company, make sure the paperwork is all signed off and agreed for you to be storing their information.
  14. Cheers Phil.

  17. Can you send mail from the command line to rule out the box's ability to do such a thing?
  18. No, it just means I won't bother. Thanks.
