BL460c's are fine servers, we have a customer using several of them (2 CPU with 16GB of RAM) to serve their needs and they work beautifully. VBScript on a logon script to identify the thin client to its location and map the correct printer. Create an OU in your AD, block inheritence to it and put your TS in there, then lock it down/configure it as you wish. Have you set this up? There's TS specific GPO's you can use or the TS Configuration mmc. Depends really... If you're using apps which won't run on 64bit then there's not much point in my opinion pushing the memory beyond 4GB. I don't rate PAE and other stuff like that. We built one of these blades up to 20GB of RAM and ran 4x32bit Windows 2003 VM's under ESXi under it but the I/O isn't great with only 2 SAS disks mirrored on it. How many users are you looking at this for? This is where there's plenty of options, I'd personally (from the company perspective here) use Sun Secure Global Desktop but you can use the Microsoft TS Gateway amongst other technoligies, Adito SSL works too. We specialise in these exact deployments from the TS, Thin Client & Remote Access methods if you do want to have a look at a Sun system in action let me know. Otherwise if this is something you'd rather deploy in house I'm here for advice as and when necessary

Do you have the ability to get another usb storage device plugged in to see whether it's just not liking the WD or whether it's everything that's not a usb keyboard. Tried plugging the usb hdd into the usb keyboard port?

We've considered and implemented solutions with Mandatory Profiles but found them too inflexible for some scenarios as some behaviour needs to persist between sessions. Still considering how to use redirection & a mandatory profile to give the 'feel' of a roaming profile without the burden!

Hi Bruce, Yes, have done this a few times where logons have been slow (mostly due to the way computers are used in schools, ie, ~400 logons in a short period of time every hour) pulling from a storage device over the network. (Average of 25MB 'large' profile's, 400 of those gives us a nice 10GB to move around in a 3-5 minute space) Be careful though, as AppData normally resides within the roaming profile you won't notice a benefit until this directory is removed (as whilst it's not used it will still be carried around!). We've not noticed any sharing issues but then our systems are normally configured to resume existing sessions so everyone is logged on only once. (Terminal Services). Good luck with it.
