Good morning all, Trying to fix a laptop for a friend-of-the-wife's and having ruled out every component down to the motherboard/cpu I've pondered whether the detachable power board from the mainboard could be the culprit. The power/usb board part number if a Hannstar J MV-4 DA0ZR1PB6D1 Rev D looking like http://www.4doutlets.com/productimages/16000.jpg The laptop is an Acer Aspire 3055WXMI with a DA0ZR3MB6EO REV 6 motherboard. Reluctant to splash a lot of cash on this (ie, new motherboard) but just wondered whether any Edugeekers had a broken down laptop anywhere with the power board I could try before breaking the bad news! Is it a site to site VPN or is the server itself initiating the connection? From the problematic source server can you talk to any other servers on the far end (not using FTP) to confirm the VPN link / route is valid? If you try from a different source server at Site A can it see the machines at site B that the problematic server cannot? Are the routing tables the same?

Couple of options: - CSNewMedia with their proven reliability and many happy Edugeekers or - EdutechHosting is Edutech on here who will host not for profit sites for free. Having used both I was happy with both.

(In my opinion) I'd at least understand what they both stand for and how their use is core to the functioning of most networks. Understand what they both do and typical issues that could result as a failure of one or both of them. (you will be fine!)

Could be some or all of that and then some. When interviewing Tech candidates I normally had quite a few to do so opted for a written quiz made up of some multiple choice and some free form answers but only ever as a supplement to the interview & 'group chat' stuff we ran. The quiz I wrote was orchestrated to be quite evil just to get an understanding of strengths and weaknesses technically with a view of at least rationalising where the candidate would need support and where they would excel. I know of colleagues who would unplug components from a PC and ask the candidate to troubleshoot the issue physically which is absolutely fair enough as a task also. I would not worry about being up against recent graduates if you have experience in schools I always valued that over a degree. (which if you have one makes your experience a brucey bonus.). I would not worry about this at all, just make sure you're well up on your DHCP, & DNS and troubleshooting approaches. Good luck.

I've recently gone through a similar discussion with a charitable organisation where the argument fell as follows: "It was more important to provide 'skills' in known & recognised within business applications for the brightest opportunities in the future for the learners" As a strong believer in FOSS this is a difficult but valid argument to swallow and puts us all in a vicious circle of whether businesses need to become more open minded in their usage/expectations or whether edu will need to force this first. I suspect I know the answer though and it isn't edu. I was always one to recommend teaching "Word Processing" & "Spreadsheets" instead of Word & Excel simply because I firmly believe it's important for people to understand the underlying function/need rather than the brand name providing this. I've worked with organisations over the years that run as much FOSS as possible both to avoid often prohibitive licensing costs but also to widen the horizons where the functional need (ie, a word processor) is more important than the name on it.

Ah no, I meant more so if you placed a link it would be accurate even once you can't edit the post anymore. Edutech's hosting is pretty reliable to be honest, I used it in the past and didn't experience any problems.

Perform an operation on a unique identifier for the device (serial number / mac address) to set a password which will be unique for the laptop, add in a spin for the date it was generated so it's a bit less linear. Something like that might be possible, it's not full proof (unless you have a random seed in the generator) and it depends if you need the password passed 'back' somewhere or if a general calculation which gives the same answer each time is sufficient.

Yes, if you get an error about SRP then it will give more info on the event viewer (which GPO SRP caused it)

Check the event viewer to see what it's complaining about specifically in the SRP.
