Well ive got my BSD box running! (im posting on it now, damn its quick) i got FreeBSD 5.4 running X11R6 with blackbox, using FireFox to post, all i need to do now is work out how to customise blackbox... hrmm...

You can disable offline files using group policy: User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Network\Offline Files Microsoft has a full list of group policies that affect offline files. Being the fool i am, ive decided to throw myself into the deep end and learn the ropes on FreeBSD, mainly because a friend of mine used to run a webserver farm and most of the boxes were BSD, and i like to set myself some challenges every now and again :twisted: Basically, id just like to know of any of you guys have experience of BSD or any advice (like run away screaming while i still can) Ive had some exposure to general linux flavours before, mainly Redhat, mandrake, and ubuntu (not to any great depth i might add) and would just like to know if theres anyone i can quiz on the board, cus i know BSD is a different animal to the general linux mix and its nearly a done deal ill mess something up and need a hand along the way.

I've seen several ... used in hospitals, universities, london businesses ... but all flaming expensive. Doesnt suprise me one bit, its not something thats widely requested really so they take the RM stance and charge as much as (in)humanly possible knowing 90% of the market will pay it out of sheer desperationl.

I would have thought a powerpoint or similar based system would be the simplest option, but would require constant attention for updating, otherwise i would have said some sort of custom web application would do the trick, i dont know of any "out of the box" solutions im afraid.

To add to eduabncs comment, the toshiba and dell laptops we have here have inbuilt wifi, if they have their physical switches turned to the off position, they are still there in the OS, but act like they cant see any networks, you might want to check there is no physical switch located (or a fn/fkey combo to enable wifi like i have on the dell D610s).

I purchase almost exclusivly dell kit and get 3 year next days on all of it, so far its been worth its weight in gold, no quibbles and real quick handling of issues, doesnt pump the price up too badly either.

Its only so they can phone you constantly and track what you view to bombard you with useless emails and adverts about things you might possibly want to buy...

A bit off topic, but ive got a network installation of kudos 5 running perfectly, with folder redirection... all i did was completely ignore the instructions and do it my own way and it worked (nearly) first time, i just needed an update from CASCAiDs website and to set some manual folder perms on the userdata folder.... As for the Direct3D error, could you post what it actualyl says, try narrow down the problem.

We run CMIS here, and to be honest, its not the best but its better then SIMs ever was. for the workstation "installations", we just have a drive mapped and copy a shortcut and a connection file down (as instructed by LandCiT) and thats all there is to it. runs off of a SQL server (nearly 2GB in memory currently, so i hope u got a beefy SQL server) and ePortal is a real nice touch. To be honest, you need to see it running on a network somewhere. If you fancy a trip up my way i can show u the CMIS setup here, im located here, PM me if you want to give me a call or something.

use a different time server, every time ive ever tried time.windows.com its failed for me, does your ISP have a time server?

Thanks for the info there Geoff, I understand now why upload is at a premium on cable networks. Interesting comment on the ADSL tho, i find ADSL speeds are usually comparable to cable regardless of what they are capable of, i'm guessing it makes no sense to give more upload to a market than what they believe is required, so if 384Kbit will do...

Is it me or is there a spiralling bandwidth "war" going on at the moment? Both Telewest and NTL are performing free service upgrades to 10Mbit. What they don't do is increase the upload caps to compensate in any way. Originally, when i was first on broadband, i had a 4:1 download to upload ratio (512/128Kbit) but on 10Mbit it is going to be closer to 26.6:1 (10240/384Kbit). Does anyone know why all ISPs are so stingy with upload caps? If you are downloading a single file @ 10Mbit, surely you are going to get close to maxing out your available upload speeds, meaning multithreading and ICS is going to suffer badly as a result? If i remember correctly, at home when i max out at 450KB/sec, i end up using roughly 20-25KB/sec upload, so multiplying up the numbers gets me to 50KB+ for a 10MBit download. From this, i would have thought a 20:1 ratio would have performed a lot better, and i dont see how the overheads could not be justified by Telewest. Don't get me wrong, i'm happy i'm getting 10Mbit at home, but i just wish these big companys would stop ignoring the people who share their pipes with several computers (which in my experience is nearly everyone i know) and give us some upload bandwidth, 10:1 would be nice

We run a merged network here, its been merged since the NT4 box dissapeared 4 years ago i believe, we never have any problems, ACLs are your best friend so far (touch wood) in the 2 1/2 years ive been here there has been no security breaches.

My build is a single image, i have over a dozen different hardware types but they share a lot of common hardware (nearly every laptop uses intel UMA based gfx, all the monitors apart from my 1905FPs work with standard windows provided drivers etc) so a single image works fine here.

I have a Dell Axim X30 too with wifi and bluetooth, never really used PDAs before i got this so im still a bit green to its capabilities.

I had to pay for all of my own stuff, 6K in all so far (2k was for kit tho... lol) Ive got my A+ and enuff MCPs to get me an MCSA, but i need to do my Net+ to get over the top, then onwards with the rest of my MCPs to get my MCSE and onto CCNA :\ tis all good fun...

i migrated to 2003 domain last year and even wit hthe state of the 2000AD it migrated fine, tbh its all gone wizard idiot proof and microsoft hold your hand for 99% of it

ive spent the last 2 years trying to get rid of it, nuff said lol. Seriously tho, just to reiterate what everyone else has said, it is a poorly written and overblown front end for AD without many options. The only useful thing i found was titlebar checks but even now ive worked around stuff like that. well, small warning for you, i hit this kicking and screaming but it was with XP not 2000, take a read of http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/3024.html Also there are a few permission issues too, but i think that was down to the BGfL cocking something up rather than Sophos but i cant remember what i changed now. But even after all that, i would still reccommend V5 its tons better then V3x

Ive found one of the biggest killers of disk space is the pagefile, i have a SQL server with 3GB of ram so the pagefile is (by default) 4.5GB in size alone! After installing SP1 and some other patches space gets eaten very quickly, my SQL box has a dedicated 36GB drive for the system and a 74GB for data, and runs nicely, some might say overkill but i personally think the performance hit from running partitioned drives is too great. also being a paranoid freak that i am i wouldnt want to put hte system and data on one disk, odds are only 1 disk will fail at a time so is a lot smaller task to fix, and usually if its the system drive i can cheat and relocate the disk in another box instantly to keep the ball rolling after a bit of path changing
