Have you tried rebooting the printers now everything is back up. I have seen printers giving Etehrnet hardware errors before just because the switch they were on powered down briefly and a reboot fixed it. Some manufacturers make the printer need to see the default gateway, meaning if the downed router was the gateway they would give up.

I suspect the best option is actually both. If a teacher wants to use an iPad then make sure they can. We are having Interactive projectors put into place, that have HDMI in on them as well, then have apple TVs and a computer. What are you going to do when a supply teachers comes in and can't use the projector because you only have Apple TV? or are you gonna have £400 items sat around on the size just in case... iPads are a tool that some teachers may use to teach they are by no means a replacement.

We use Ubuntu laptops and openoffice, then just delete the spellcheck files.

You can get the SCORM version for VLEs still. It comes with a "player" but we don't use it so I have never tried it. Well I did last year, I bought Physics 16-18 and a Biology one.

LibreOffice is OpenOffice but more business based and has an .MSI by default. It is made by the original creaters of OpenOffice and for all intent and purposes is OpenOffice. I moved to it so i didn't have to keep creating .MSIs for the latest version of OpenOffice!

I've just been on our Exchange box and on the "content filtering" you can quarantine items wth a SCl rating above a certain number. Use this and have the value set high to start with, and disable reject and delete messages. Sender reputation filtering is also adviseable as it purely blocks "bad" senders. So you have to be a bad sender to be on the list, not just have an email with bad content. But definitely do the quarantine first.

Best practice would probably be to purchase a 3rd party supported piece of software or hardware to do your anti-spam for you. Best practice and the best solution do not always sit perfectly together. If the spam is a huge problem today, then ignore best practice, and get the spam filter (only light) setup but instead of rejecting the emails get them redirected to a spam box. This would remove the worse of the offending emails, assumign you are getting the usual type of emails associated with spam. This way all emails are still kept and you can briefly look at them once a day to check nothing genuine is getting caught. You don't actually mention what you already have. What are the servers running, what are the clients running etc. No point starting fresh if you are for example already on Windows 7 clients and Server 2008 (as logn as it is 64bit) or R2 unless there is an obvious problem that exists. Don't chaneg things to fast you will upset everyone, basically take between now and half term to work out what you have and how it is working, then form a plan for the summer and take it to your line manager.

Surely you can remove the permissions for Self from the Exchange mailbox then re add the account with read only? Or maybe removing SELF would break it, only one way to find out...

You cna surely get an ,iso for XP pro fairly easily without paying for the discs. Schools on license agreements can get hold of it legitimately, though if your with RM then you won't have said agreement. Otherwise will your local LA not provide them, I know some LAs in the Northwest do the licensing very much centrally.

Honestly I don't think there is an easy way to do it. If you have an XP Pro license though, the you could jsut get hold of a copy of the generic disks and install it from scratch?

My concern, is more to do with the life of the device. Is it going to last 2 years? 3 years?

As Glenda said take a backup first. How hard is it? well you cannot go from 1.9.4 to 2.2 directly, you must go via 2.0.4 and 2.1.4 first (well a month ago you had to). You should also be on the latest 1.9 before you try to go to version 2.0 If you are moving to a new server then it is easier because you have more mess up time, and more time to check everything. Some things to look out for are "legacy files", you will need them! What plugins won't work (probably most). If you have time then do a trial run on a new server from a backup, and you will iron out all the bugs. I've done it, although on Linux and it wasn't hard but it was time consuming and very annoying at times.

You need a UK ip address for it to work. So VPN gets you this and solves the problem.

Sounds like a summer job to me, work out what does what now, work out a plan of attack and then start it in the summer holidays.

I am assuming it means you are buying 2 x the Server and 1 x Storage If so then do the Servers have 1 processor in or 2? The storage is a 12-bay drive array, two HDDs as in option 1 isnt enough in my opinion as you are limited to what RAID you can use. So you would need more drives. Option 2 seems best here. Server side, your Option 1 has 4 threads only on the servers, which is limiting in virutalisation terms, Option two has 8 per processor. Option 2 i s best here This is said without fully investiagting the servers, e.g. max supported RAM, max supported Processors, what NICs they give you. Does one have a better warranty etc.

There is a company in Leeds that deploy them, but I can't remember the name...
