That is a poor analogy - a students home area on a network is not their personal property. It is outlined in their AUP that the network is for use for educational purposes only. The point I was trying to make - albeit badly - was that teaching staff should not require access to everything in a users area, only those areas which are relevant to them. We are all aware that the students work area is for educational purposes only and it is up to both us and teachers to ensure that users are educated to respect those rules. Could you imagine the uproar amongst teachers if it was said that SMT had access to all staff areas (sorry I couldn't resist that one )

Look at it another way - would a teacher be allowed to rummage through a students school bag without just cause? The answer is definately not! (with the exception of head teachers with justification) We are lucky here in that we work well with the vast majority of teaching staff here, they respect our decisions and we make an effort to provide them with what they want. It may not be exactly what they were expecting but the results are the same The remainder are the usual 'don't want to know' which most school have

Not really a fair comment. Yes it may cost a little to set up a different VLE such as moodle but the long term costs for maintenance and tutoring the system are minimal compared to a large annual fee for a MS solution. Don't get me wrong I have nothing against Sharepoint, we may even go that way ourselves once our LEA make their minds up I just felt that that comment gave the impression that Sharepoint was cheaper when in reality it isn't. For example - we spent under 4K on a new server, which we needed anyway and installed the software ourselves. The training aspect for teaching staff was already accounted for within the budget as it would have been required no matter what system was put in place. The server also hosts our intranet, asset register etc.

Walk out and accept you won't be paid for the days you have remaining is the short answer. In reality there is not a damn thing they can do about it. If you have a log of events from recent weeks you could probably claim constructive dismisal. -
Try AA Computer Repair Company webby is http://www.uklaptoprepairs.co.uk/ and ask for Jim Watson. We have sent kit off to them and it's come back repaired before our budget office had time to send the order Very helpful too.

I've just been asked about this very subject to cover the library, entrances to the school, a cashless canteen, and registration. Biometrics in schools do not contain details of the whole fingerprint but works by taking measurements of the print which is supposed to stop the fingerprint being reconstructed. Parents that object could be offered the use of smartcards instead and all biometric data should be destroyed when the student leaves the school. Thats about all the info I have but I believe BECTA have a guidline for the subject.

I think I prefer Grumbledooks spam - at least it's short and relevant You should learn to target your business at people who could actually make use of your products. Read carefully the posts on this forum and you will soon realise that what you describe above is as much use to us as a chocolate kettle in a hot desert.

Use another computer, like the one used to post your message, to email exam-builder and get your money back or Check the drivers are installed, up to date and are enabled.

We have quite a few - not stunning but do the job.

Would it be possible to make an image of the one that works and reimage the one that doesn't?

Oh great!!! More Spam!

Standard across the school

Sorry - should have said - We don't block them as such but we discourage it. If anyone has a problem with an external account then they are politely told that we don't support it. We provide an email account for the purpose of education and work related tasks, if the user thinks they know better then hard luck if it don't work.
-
By using the school system: 1. staff and students can email each other easily as we use exchange and email addresses are easy to find or even work out. 2. More secure for the students 3. Administration is easier. 4. Usually less spam in their email boxes. If you use an external provider you can't control it and will probably cause more headaches than it's worth over time.

I can't find anything in the Cron files There is a reference to the function in moodle/lib/moodlelib.php (notify_login_failures) approx line 5405. Apparently the problem still exists in 1.8.2+ which version are you running?
-
Thanks Geoff - I assume that is the file that moodle uses to bring up Admin > Reports > logs > site errors ? I'm trying to find the file that inputs the link into the email so I can change it. The above file seems to be correct so there must be another one about somewhere :? Any ideas? btw - moodle tracker number is MDL-12293 if anyone is interested.
-
Currently moodle sends me an email listing failed login attempts - no problems there. However at the end of the mail it says I can view the log at http://#####.#####.#####.sch.uk/moodle/course/log.php?id=1&chooselog=1&modid=site_errors. Clicking the link gives a page not found. I can't find a file called log.php in .../moodle/course or anything in the database. It's obviously storing it somewhere, because it's sending the emails. So where is this info coming from? and how can I fix it to view it?

You could have put an up to date catalog on the stick - spring 2006?

Personally I think you need to look into more detail as to what you want out of the system in the long term. Access to home directories and shared areas is easily done using webdav, and the collaberation via moodle. All at no cost other than a little setup time, unless you purchase a dedicated server to host them. What MIS system are you using? Do you want to intergrate this into the final solution? What are the requirements of the teaching staff? Do they need all the bells and whistles or just the ability to share resources? Weigh up the cost of paying for a solution and the support costs against hiring a part time support individual. We now have webdav and moodle running, but we are doing this so we can make a better judgement as to what our future requirements may be. We are not opposed to buying a solution but don't see the point in spending thousands on a solution which we may find falls short of our requirements. Buying a solution off the shelf may sound the easier option but it doesn't always work out that way.
