  1. Do you have an exception made for the DNS addy of your listener?
  2. Nice to see more School IT Techs blogging about what they are getting up to
  3. Anyone who knows me will know that I like my videos and after spending most of yesterday getting it going I am happy to bring to the stage..........SERVER 2012 DIRECT ACCESS (WHICH IS THE COOOLEST THING EVER!!) Server 2012 Direct Access - Overview and from the users view - YouTube At time of posting video was still churning through YouTube but the SD version is already up.
  4. Still on there (was a pain to get through App-v but it works) but PhotoShop is soooo much more fun (through App-V as well).
  5. CS6 is working fine for us on Citrix VDI-in-a-Box so it must be one of those extra settings.
  6. Microsofts latest take on not making it easy to config the pinned items in Windows 7 by the sounds of it. But then again if the user can get to all of their applications through search what is the need to make it a mandated thing after all Windows is 'personal again'
  7. A few things that helped me setup DA in 2012- 'Real World' Direct Access installation using Windows Server 2012 - Canberra Premier Field Engineering: Team Blog - Site Home - MSDN Blogs - how to set it up in the real world - includes a thing about setting up PKI. UAG DirectAccess: Network Location Server (NLS) | Concurrency, Inc. - I did NLS like this article says and it works a treat, its a very important feature as if your NLS server goes down your PCs inside the domain will think they are outside... The F5 Guy » Direct Access – Corrupt NRPT Fix - I suggest you TEST DA very carefully (single machine in a security group of its own) but if you break DNS on your client PCs this will help.
  8. So long as you have AD, DNS and DHCP setup and working there isn't much else needed - the RAS role install will configure everything else on the server. Side note - if you need Windows 7 you need to setup PKI as well.
  9. That's a 2008 R2 article........DA in 2012 is very different.
  10. Clean installed on Server 2012 - didn't need a single reboot Are you installing on hardware or in a VM?
  11. Direct Access in Server 2012 is almost as easy as setting up a VPN (well at least I realise it is now after spending half a day getting it sorted) it can be used side by side with a VPN. Look for a SSTP VPN as well - just needs port 443 and if you are a school you can get a free security cert from JANET through your LEA.
  12. Don't quote me on this as I don't come into contact with SQL that often but isn't SQL Express limited to one CPU core only (this making your 6 core CPU largely redundant)?
  13. 2 years and no issues with any 'nasties' on our network through the VPN from no domain joined PCs- no doubt thanks to the built in endpoint checker of UAG 2010.... Having said this the largest number of our users are using domain joined (and managed PCs) when connecting to our VPN. For basic use just routing and remote access in Server 2008 R2 will fill your needs if you are after more features (and so called security) then look into something like Forefront UAG. We've just finished work on setting up Microsoft Direct Access 2012 and will be doing the final testing in a few days time - if it works as well as expected then its seamless access to the schools network without even needing to choose to connect to something. If done right a VPN is a very powerful tool that you should consider rolling out to all staff members.
  14. Sounds like the first update that will come from Windows Update on my Surface!
  15. I can't belive that they wouldn't mash out another update - even Vista had a SP2 and there are so many hotfixes out there even for SP1 that should be included in a second service pack.
  16. Have built the following servers for work CCTV Server - AMD Phenom II powered and 4x 2TB HDDs for video - cost about £650 and runs a treat (Inside a new Storage Server | my world of IT) Backup Server - Had a Chenbro case and a load of 1TB HDDs donated to us only issue is it had one of the super old Core2Duos that wasn't 64bit - spent about £280 on a new AMD A6, 8GB RAM, mobo and SSD to boot off - it runs like the wind! (Time for a new backup server | my world of IT) RDS Server Farm - Serious custom builds here - 2U cases with 2x mobos in each, fantastic design IMO that I would repeat time after time (Series: Custom RemoteFX RDS Farm « my world of IT) However........for serious work I am sticking to HP
  17. Using Ntdsutil.exe to transfer or seize FSMO roles to a domain controller
  18. Or restore from backup?? We've done a DR test in the past at a primary we look after with ~300GB of data and a DC restored in a few hours.
  19. Yep nice company as well. Why not just go with a 1U server with 2x CPUs and PCI-E for SSD
  20. One of these - Rackmount 2u hotswap case online at X-Case Full spec is here - Custom RemoteFX RDS Farm – Farm Architecture + Hardware Specs | my world of IT
  21. Phew fast going - took me half a day to figure out how to make the first one of my design reduced that to 2 hours (pair of mobos in one 2U case) on the second time round. Can't wait to build some more using the new AMD A10s!
  22. Nope just Microsoft they are keeping a tight reign on them but you will be able to get the Asus/Samsung ones from other places (inc the high street).
  23. Microsoft is the only place you can get it from - they are out of stock in the UK at the moment but if you pre order one it should be with you in 2 weeks or so (last I checked).
  24. Still trying to get DirectAccess to work here! Every time I give it a go it mucks up DNS Know what you mean about Lync though - just can't do without it now (full VOIP + IM here) and can see direct access being the same as a replacement to our current VPN.
  25. Was it this one - http://www.edugeek.net/forums/general-chat/64837-cheapskate-server-farm.html I've also done something very simlar as well using this idea as the base - Series: Custom RemoteFX RDS Farm « my world of IT
