Hi, Im helping a member of staff out, and was just looking for some quick advice. They have an old machine, and want to simply take the hard drive out, and place in new machine. Perfectly fine, but im just wondering when the new hard drive is in, what about drives etc. Which is why they need my help, Whats the best way of doing this?

Sam, I've just decided to take a look on ours, saving a word document, and i have the same problem as you do, id never noticed before, word defaults to documents, and then only lets you browse to folders that are local.

Resolved this, needed a few restarts to pick up the settings, Doh!!

right so here is where i got to yesterday, now when i go to the url http://hostname:8080/index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog it lists all updates, so i now know that url is working, also i have updated in the software updates preference on the client macs this url for them to access the updates on the server, but when i run software update on the client machine they still appear to download from apple, is there any way to force the client machine to go to the url on the server, and how to test to make sure the updates are coming from the internal macserver and not apple? the only way i can tell is because of the speed of the updates downloading Regards

[ms office - 2003] Opening Mac word files on PC
stevenwba replied to Scifigirl's topic in Office Software
you should still be able to open them as long as you have this installed Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats -
Hi Sam, So when on the mac they can see their network drive, but in office 2011 they cant see it. As hodge said, we had something similar, but it was just a matter of showing users not to just save the first place they see, and to locate there shared folder. I have the same problem on machines that use windows 7, just because it looks different to xp and shows locations differently. A screenshot of what they can see in office when clicking save might help

I read on a mac forum about setting up the webservice, and then setting up an alias, is this required?, as the webservice was already on, but i havent created an alias yet? Edit: when i type that url you provided it now goes to a page listing updates in text only, so im guessing thats workign now, i added the url to the client for software updates, and decided to run the update on the client machine, although judging by the speeds im pretty sure it just carried on downloading them from apple and now the server?? i cant think what else im missing?

Thanks for that, will give it a go when i finally get round to actually installing some software, at the moment in still setting up the server, im currently stuck on setting up software updates. I have started the software updates service. Setup all new updates to install into a folder on the hard drive, which it has done, i have left the port set to default which is 8088. When clicking on the client to set the update url, i have entered http://hostname:8080/index.sucatalog Now i am totally stuck, i have tried typing that url in but i get page cannot be found error. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Sean, that video explained a lot! at the end of that video it mentioned a unix command to complete the install of disk images, dont suppose you have a link, or know what that might be? Regards

Thanks for that Hodge, nice to know the whole process if just as easy as intended for standalone macs

Once the wireless key is added, it should stay there, you are only prompted for admin password when trying to change settings or install ect, so she must be trying to do something you dont want her to.

Im pretty sure they do just copy themselves across, but im not sure how registering and licenses work, maybe someone here will shed some light on the whole process, all i know is we have comic life and to register the whole network in one go, you have to setup a resource library in shared items, where all licenses goes, and it replicates across all bound macs into the same folder locally

p.s this is lion osx server 10.7.1 but as ive never used the server edition of snow leopard i couldnt really say what is different??!!

Just setup software updates, and now im thinking, how easy it was, once you actually find what you need mac is pretty easy, seems to me the only problem i have is exactually finding what i need in the first place, or the mac alternative of something i know how to do in windows, my next task is to setup the network library, so i can share all license information for some software. Then my last job is to setup deplystudio and take an image of a complete mac. All in all and pretty useful day today (:

Have now found where you configure the macs to use the server for software updates, im guessing now, when the servers downloads the updates for itself, it uses them to give out to the clients as well, as i can only configure where the clients point to and not actually what they download. Steep learning curve, but enjoying it! (: EDIT: Again found the answer to my own question!!

Right, so ive managed to get everything listed above and have been taking a good luck around admin tools, the mac clients are bound to AD and not open directory, so now i just want to connect the macs to the server so they appear in workgroup manager, but cant see how to do that, i do i need to have them bound to open directory and they appear automatically? Also ive checked the option to run the software update service, but again, where do i configure what updates it pushes down to the macs clients, and on the clients how to i configure them to download updates from the server and not from apple via internet? Many Thanks!

So thats what i needed!! thanks alot for that, downloading in

Is workgroup manager included in lion because i cant seem to find it, i know the other two are addons Regards

Hi, Ive just had a shiney new mac server land on my desk to help control the growing number of macs in school, which we have only had over the past 12 months, currently upto 20 but this is expected to keep on growing so, a great time to introduce a mac server, like a lot of people here, im only learning mac myself since we had those first macs 12 months ago. Although i have managed to manage the macs locally and learn a fair bit during this year, when it comes to the server side, i have no experience what so ever, the most technical thing i have done with the standalone macs, was to bind them to AD to allow windows users to be able to logon. Now my questions and need for advice come, because i have read about all the things i can now achieve with the mac server, but how i learnt mac, was to first find the mac alternative to how i was trying to do something it windows, like system preferences to control panel etc. So i have been looking for computers and users alternative in mac, although i can see where to add users, i dont know how i connect my mac clients to the server. How help on this would be great, first changes i should make to the server, and just where i can find everything. My goal is to be able to lock the macs down, have a mapped drive from the mac server on the clients, share printers, and push applications and updates out using the server. Regards

Hi, Desk space is limited in one of our computer suites, due to the need to cram it with so many machines, so now im looking at solutions to try and free up the desk space. Im pretty sure ive seen a solution where the computer is fixed to the underside of the work surface, but im unable to find what im after, and was hoping someone on here may know where to get them and if anyone is using this solution how has it worked? and worth the cost? Regards

It the same boat as many who have posted here, working for a few years in i.t and now looking to get some certifications to help move forward, as im working as a tech, i was hoping to do something like MCITP: Support Tech or MCITP: server administrator, just wondered if anyone knew where to go. I find the hardest part is finding somewhere to study and not being ripped off, as most online study websites want £1000s
