Sounds like you need to check your DNS for forward and reverse lookups. There's no reason why a Mac should be any slower at accessing SMB shares or discovering Sib licence servers. Ours aren't.

Join the mac server to your AD. Promote it to a directory master. Join your client machines to AD, add your mac server in to the search path but do not bind. Then use workgroup manger on the mac server to manage your mac users and machines. That's a very rough how-to!

Which OS is on this? Try system preferences, sharing, remote administration. Tick the box for screen sharing. Make sure you are connecting, when sharing, with the correct username.

What we do is set up ARD as we wish our staff to see it, then copy ~/library/preferences/com.apple.remotedesktop.plist out, and force it on the machine as a managed preference via workgroup manager. This way staff inherit the correct computer lists as they log in across the site.

Hi, Our science dept are using activteach under Windows 7. They have found that after using the application for a period of time, the audio output on the PC stops. No sound plays from AT or YouTube etc. The only solution is to restart the computer. We have tried updating the sigmatel audio driver, and have switched to a USB audio adaptr with a different chipset but the issue still occurs! Has anyone else had this problem? I'm assuming something in AT is killing off the audio driver perhaps?

We use DeployStudio, ARD and Workgroup Manager (in OSX Server). Works for us.

Hi, I was wondering what people are using to provide document collaboration services (aside from SharePoint). We had briefly looked in to Kerio Workspace before it was renamed SamePage and went cloud only (!). Basically, we are looking for a product which will allow users to check out documents to work on, log who modified them and when, who owns them, and assign comments and users to various documents. This would be at staff only level. It seems that Workspace did what we wanted, and alternative products like SenseNET or Alfresco go way over the top of what we want. Any suggestions?

We are struggling with this, too. Apple won't tell us the destination IP address or ports for Siri or Dictation, so we can't get them opened. If you have made any headway on this please report back!

The other DC is straight 2008 (not R2). Making a new computer account does not work FYI. Not to worry - was a test box so will re-do it.

No, just AD / DNS replica

I've been a silly boy. Luckily this is in a test environment so it's not too much of an issue, but I would like to learn how to repair if possible: We have a fresh R2 server set up with AD services, replicating with a main DC. We had another test machine, a client, set up with the SAME computer name on the domain. Was set up a few weeks ago and forgotten about. I renamed the client box to avoid the duplicate name, which has obviously taken the name out of AD, so the replicating AD server can no longer log in as the "security database on the server does not a have a computer account on the domain". D'oh. I cannot log in locally, either as the domain admin, or .\admin. Cannot log in under safe mode with networking. I can log in with straight safe mode, but cannot do much as networking is not loaded. What is the correct way to fix this stupid mistake?

I would thoroughly check, or test 10.8 before deployment as I have read online that lots of features are removed, or broken in it. As I say, I have read this and it's not through 1st hand experience. As a result we are still running Snow Leopard on our servers.

Get them to click Create New Keychain. Or go in to Keychain Access and delete the old Keychains.

In Directory Utility there is an option under the AD section to "Force Local Home on Startup Volume". But to me, it sounds as though you have not set up folder redirection properly to redirect caches, or your XServe has way too many connections. Our kids all work on the network and have no problems, even with iPhoto or Photoshop.

Hello, Does anyone have any tried and tested advice for raising the domain functional level on Server 2008? Ours is running in 2000 mode. I have done some research and have read a few horror stories. Can anyone offer any advice on how to safely do this? Thanks.

iPhoto will only run from a HFS+ formatted drive/share. This is why you receive the "The library could not be opened because the file system of the library is unsupported" message. We have no problems with it running over a network.

Mouse - add in a plist in to Workgroup Manager to manage this. We have it set so that the right button on the original Mighty Mouse was active by default Roaming - you need network home directories for this. What is your current set up? Home in sidebar - again if you have network home directories, this just works. You need to clarify your current set up.

Set a firmware password. It will disable all startup key commands.

Are you running any other backup software on your network such as Retrospect? If so you can use this to backup your XServe to one of your backup sets.

I expect either your Workgroup Manager preferences are set to "disable" users form accessing the Printers sys pref, or the user is not a local admin of the machine. Or, if they are a local admin, when they log in the laptop is set to remember all managed preferences, which an admin (you, or them) can disable by holding down CMD whilst logging in.

I would not touch Extricom with a barge pole. We had a system installed which never worked properly. The install was cheap (access points cable tied to pipes above false ceilings). Throughput was a joke. When we asked for help we were told we needed a £1300 support contract. When I asked reseller for where to find updated firmware for the switch they said we needed a £1300 support contract. We have retired the system now and it's just providing open access for 6th form smartphones / netbooks in a cafe area. We are very interested in Xirrus. Not sure of the costs yet but we have a survey scheduled in a couple of weeks
