In greprefs, all.js, you add the line pref("general.config.filename", "mozilla.cfg"); as Geoff said. You then make a text file with your config options/locks in. This goes in Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS after you have changed it to rot13 format and called it mozilla.cfg. The first time I tried this, I had the same error message. I then remade the text file in SubEthaEdit and changed the line endings to Windows line endings, saved it out as a .txt, then used the online configurator mentioned above to get the .cfg file. Hope that makes sense!

Thanks for this. It's something I will look in to. I've managed to solve my problem a different way though. We have a "unique" network set up which I have inherited this summer. The rogue Firefox profile folders were leftovers from a previous network set-up and were clashing in some way. I have just searched and deleted them from our homefolder servers en-mass. All our user accounts work fine now.

Hello, I'm just setting up FFox 3 on a room of iMacs (10.5.4). I have edited the global prefs.js file with our various settings to force homepages / proxy settings etc using "user_pref". This works fine, but I would like to use "lockPref" so that students cannot remove proxy settings. If i chage user_pref for lockPref, the entire line of code is ignored so students are left with a default mozilla home page and no proxy at all. If i change it back to user_pref, it all works fine?! Is lockPref the correct syntax for this, or am I missing something? Also, we use the system proxy plugin so that FFox picks up the system proxy from Mac OS X. However, when FFox launches, it insists on a compatibility check of the plugin which is a pain. I installed a second plugin that disables compatibility checking but this will not run properly when I send the app out to our iMacs (says the file is malformed). Is there another way I can set FFox to NOT check compatibility of installed plugins / addons? Thanks again!

Hi, We're having an issue with a new computer suite with Firefox. We are running Mac OS 10.5.4 and FFox 3. When a user logs in and launches FFox, they are told that a session is already running and FFox quits. We have found that if you delete the user's FFox Profile folder (inside ~/Library/Application Support/) FFox will open and work perfectly. I have thought that we can use a LoginHook to delete the user's FFox profile on log in. However, the user does not have permission to run the script as themselves, but, if I run the script as root (which is what LoginHooks run as), the "current user" variable $1 becomes root, so the script tries to delete root's profile folder!! Does anyone know how to run a script as root, but return the current logged in user as a variable? Also, does anyone know what the unix variable is to find the group of the current logged in user? Hello - I have another question! I have two machines, XP Pro which are members of a Windows 2000 domain. These machines are on an 'admin' network which is a VLAN on the main school network. As a result of this, the GP from the Windows 2000 DC doesn't get to the machines (network manager doesn't know a way round this so if you do, let me know..). We use the local group policy on the machine as a replacement. However, on these two machines, I can set my options in gpedit.msc, log off and log in as a vanilla user, and all of my GP options are ignored - such as the desktop picture and any printers added locally as administrator vanish. Has anyone seen this issue before, or am I doing something stupid? Thanks!

Ah thanks! That setting was being set in a separate policy so was left out in the current one. It all works now. Cheers.

Hello, I have a problem with applying a custom Start menu to a group of machines. Here's the background.... We have a Win 2000 server applying group policy to our machines. Machines are in various OUs depending on their use/location in the school. Previously, I have created a policy for these OUs and enabled 'Group Policy Loopback Processing' and redirected the Start menu so that, for example, machines in the Music block get a Start menu full of relevant music apps. I have set this up again, doing the same thing with an OU of 'Staff' machines. However when you log on to the machine, my custom start menu seems to get added to the local machine's default Start menu which is messy and duplicates things. I have set the Loopback Processessing mode to 'Merge' and 'Replace' but neither makes a difference. Has anyone seen this happen before? Any ideas?

We never had any cooling on our severs for many years. The last couple of years temperatures in the room in summer have often hit 40-42deg C. Some servers have been shutting down as they were too hot. Bless them. Last year we were finally allowed to get air conditioning in the room. Prevention being better than cure does not work here - we had to have shutdowns / switchoffs to prove there was a heat problem before air con stopped getting scrubbed from the budget!

Thanks for your advice. I've been doing the assign to PCs rather than users. I decided to try a Citrix client MSI rather than FileMaker Pro and that worked straight away. I'll have ago with the MSIEXEC /a option with FileMaker again to see if that works. Thanks!

Hello, We are running a Windows 2000 AD server with XP Pro clients. I'd like to set up the software installation part of Group Policy so that I can deploy software at login etc remotely. Does anyone know of a how-to on how to do this? I've had a fiddle around and tried testing it on a machine but my MSI doesn't get installed. I've also tried the setting where you open a file associated with the software you wish to install to trigger installation, and the Windows installer appears for a second then vanishes! Incase it matters, I'm trying to install Filemaker Pro 8. I have copied the CD to a share that everyone can read on my server. Any advice would be great. Thanks, Stephen

Glad to hear it. Out structure is a little unique and I must say a bit of a hinderance and quite frustrating at times. I'm sounding a bit of a moan now!

We have... 1x ICT Director 1x NM 1x Senoir Tech 1x Vanilla Tech 2x Classroom assistants The assistants are more in classes to help with "how do I get a picture from the Internet?" questions from kids but should be able to restock printers etc. The rest of the structure is a bit of sham but that's more down to the people...

I know this is very late, but you could start your printer conection section with con2prt /f Which will flush / delete the printer connections.

We have 6x 42" screens, and the way we do it is as follows: 1 Mac Mini computer locked away in nearby office to each screen, networked. Use of Apple Remote Desktop software (can equally be done at the command line for free, but we have the software anyway) to push out updated presentations to each screen individually or en-mass. We then create presentations in Keynote, which allows for silky smooth high res transitions, builds, movie playback, motion text, layering etc etc. It looks very good, and works well too.

If you look in Directory Access in the Utilities folder, inside Applications, there is an "Active Directory" section. Go into this and you can easilly join your MS AD domain, withouth having to mess around at the command line. My, it's almost like using a real computer.

You could always buy a copy of Roxio Toast...

Which flavour of OS X are you using? IP printing works fine for us.

We use PaperCut NG, and have found it to be a perfect printer accounting solution. We run it over our Macs and PCs and have had no trouble with it at all.
