yes I believe as long as the hardware is the same. We have to do this all the time with same model numbers that nics have failed on.

have you compared the hyper v settings from old server to new server? i never allow the physcial NIC to share the adaptor , its best practice to have a dedicated NIC ( or teamed) for the host and a dedicated ( or teamed ) for the virtual switch. but i notice you have 2 virtual switches, whats the private virtual switch used for?

hi Pete is the new hyper-v host 2012 r2 ? how many physcial nics? what speed are these nics? what are each NIC plugged into ( and vlan'd?) can you post a screenshot of your hyper-v virtual switch manager? my initial suspicion is that the "allow management operating system to share this adapter" is ticked

if both Team A and Team B are both using DHCP servers , how do you stop a team B client getting issued a DHCP address from team A's dhcp server? it sounds like you need to implement vlans , not only for this task but also for security,

have you tried a port scan to see if port 3389 is open? have you tried nbtstat -a from a client to double check the ip is actually the server you want to connect too?

Zezima, I am confident your problem is not VLAN related, it is related to the transparent proxy you have already mentioned is not managed by you. There will be a ruleset on the proxy for "staff" (not strict) to access content and another ruleset for the "students" (strict) , the strict ruleset is stopping the connection. You will have to speak to the managed proxy tech support to resolve this issue.

to me it sounds like a rule on the transparent proxy now allowing the connection, I would contact hertfordshire grid helpdesk to get them to look into it.

I think they really mean internal threat . If you can trace route you can identify every server / router your traffic goes out via including transparent proxies .

yes please add the FQDN , IP and NETBIOS name of your exchange server, if i was a betting man i am usre this will resolve your problem . if it did, thanks for bearing with the process of elimination and replying! we got there in the end!!!!

Thanks , we are surely getting somewhere now! this statement says it all So the smoothwall is either trying to forward your FQDN to your external NAT address or something is wrong with the HTTPS inspection. out of interest do you use the smoothwall's "automatic configuration" setting ? (web proxy > automatic configuration )

thanks To confirm: on the LAN you have problems accessing OWA via HTTPS ? HTTPS working fine from external locations. more questions sorry! Is your smoothwall your "default gateway" in ipconfig? ( on both client and server) , if not what is? have you tried using http internally and not HTTPS ? ( to see if you get the same problem) have you tried unticking all proxy options in IE and going direct via IP? Does your smoothwall inspect HTTPS? Does your smoothwall use an upstream proxy? what vlan is the exchange server in? what vlan is the client in? does the problem exist accessing OWA from the same VLAN as the exchange server is on? my initial thoughts are smoothwall related.

Thanks, this gives us more clues new questions:- What is the browser used to access OWA? do you access OWA via FQDN or IP or netbios name ? is it over HTTPS or HTTP? do you have SSL cert signed? Do you have forwarding enabling on your DNS? Do you use VLANS? just elimating some possibilities, could be from what you have said DNS error, networking issue,

ok 1 server, new questions whats the OS? does the owa fail to load on site only or externally only or both? do you use a proxy server? , do you bypass local address's? do you NAT OWA to external ip address ? what ports are open?

do you have 2 seperate servers? A Mailbox server and a Client Access server?

If you relationship and job is secure i would recommend buy now. There is another way, depending what infrastructure you have. For example :- We have a BYOD wireless , everyone knows the WPA key, once on this wireless you are now on the BYOD VLAN. The BYOD vlan only allows device to talk to the citrix / RDS servers (smoothwall blocks everything and redirects). The wifi (MERU) segregates the wifi devices from talking to each other.
