is your smoothwall (express i'm guessing?) firewall policy set to half open or closed? if so you will need to allow all the ports for remote desktop gateway in the OUTBOUND rules (I haven't used smoothwall express in a while so cannot remember the exact pages/terminology - sorry!).

Do you have MDT set to reboot at the end of the task sequence (have a look for finishaction= in customsettings.ini)? if so, then MDT will reboot when the image has captured and it will boot from the hard disk and boot from the (sysprep'ed) image. I suggest creating a reference image in a virtual machine (but not installing vmware tools/Vbox guest additions/hyperv additions), then you will be able to snapshot at each stage and if something goes wrong you can revert to the last snapshot rather than rebuilding the reference image from scratch.

sometimes running on the client works (after about 10 mins or so). I also find that hitting the 'Check for Updates' link the the windows 7 control panel works occasionally too. Make sure you have the latest Windows Update agent installed too (visit windowsupdate.microsoft.com to check) as this can prevent clients from updating.

have you updated the windows update agent? Going to windowsupdate.microsoft.com should do it for you, but in some cases i had to use the links on the following page to upgrade the agent (How to Install the Windows Update Agent on Client Computers), then visit windowsupdate.microsoft.com and let it do what it needs to do. edit - this page suggests that this is caused by the .net framework 4 on Win7. If you have it installed, try removing it and see what happens.

I seem to think that WSUS on server 2012+ uses port 8530 as the default now, so try http://wsus:8530 instead of http://wsus

For IE10 you will need a Win8 or Server 2012 box with the RSAT bits installed to manage the GPPs (I don't think the IE maintenance settings work with IE10). I think there is a way of editing the GPP xml files for server 2008r2/IE10 if you don't have W8/2012, but haven't tested it myself. Home versions of windows 7 cannot join a domain. As Michael mentions you need either windows 7 pro or enterprise to allow the domain join

You need to install the CSE update from here on all your XP machines. You can push this out using WSUS if you have it set up, but you will need to sync the feature packs category before it will show up in WSUS. You could set up the Folders bit in GPP to create a folder somewhere on the machine (e.g. to create a new folder on the root of C:\ called test, you would use the Machine config GPP Folder option rather than the GPP section under User Config, then reboot the machine and see if the folder is created when the policy applies)

I would put the firewall settings into a separate policy rather than the default policy. I also have an ASUS motherboard, however it's only got USB2 ports as it's around 4yrs old.

It happened to me again earlier and I managed to run some diagnostics. Resource monitor was showing that 'deferred procedure calls and interrupt service routines' was taking 80-90% of CPU Usage (which made the machine lag - not by too much but the lag was noticeable). After finding a few tutorials via google, I downloaded and installed latencymon which showed that usbport.sys was causing the problems (I did have usb devices plugged in at the time). This was as far as I got before windows update rebooted the machine to install updates .

My Win7 Pro x64 install has a similar issue where it will just drop out randomly and not connect to the network/internet until I reboot. I mainly use debian (and rarely boot into windows which makes it more frustrating when it happens) and have no problems despite it running on the same box. Does it happen when you use a static IP?
