Indeed @jthompson - we give a rough time on our jobs, but the planner in Teams allows me to assign people to them easier, and figure out roughly what we can get done in the time we have. Strict "this will take 1 day" type things simply don't happen - things go wrong far too often, especially in our old buildings!

I would really advise investing in some onsite installation time from their professional services team. They know the system and will get you up and running much faster than doing it all yourself. We're moving from SG to XG later in August, and have a day's engineer time to do a knowledge transfer and assist.

These days? SSDs are cheap. Though, not usually through the big names like Dell/HP. A Supermicro based machine from one of the smaller companies (VeryPC would probably be my go to) would be better value. We run Samsung PM863 2TB SSDs for our storage. Equivalent ones are £336 each now. So, I'd be scrapping those 10k drives, and slapping 4 of these in RAID 10 instead.

To be honest, with a machine like that? I'd re-image the entire machine.

I suspect the end result will be a very quick release of an EU version of Office etc... Removing the telemetry data, or at least allowing us to entirely disable it.

I have access to the Wonde organisation dashboard, so can see the request from The Headteacher's Report for access to the system - and can see all the categories of data they want to access. I'm not worried about the Wonde side of things, more about the Privacy Policy provided by THR.

Just a quick one - what do people think of this privacy policy? I'm considering asking our DPO about it, as I'm a little unsure of their using "Pupil information" and "Staff information" as types of personal data they collect - they seem far too generic and don't really say what they collect in there. Surely it should be "pupil assessment data" "pupil attendance data" "pupil behaviour data" etc... If you are buying a new server - and not moving everything into "the cloud"... And if you don't want the peace of mind of having support on the end of a phone etc...

You think you'd not replace a server in 10 years? Really? I don't know of *any* school that waits 10 years to replace their server - especially if its running mission critical services, like being able to call the emergency services... Throw in the UPS to keep the system powered in a power cut. Throw in inevitable issues with updates when they happen (FreePBX and Asterisk aren't always the easiest to update, in my experience of having run it for 10 years). Throw in having zero support when something goes wrong etc... Sure, you're paying more for a managed solution where you pay by extension, but you're paying for support and peace of mind on top. Also, you assume that everyone is running VMs already - this site is proof they aren't. Plenty of questions about whether they should virtualise. Plenty of schools running off a handful of physical servers or more. Plenty of primary schools running from a single server for everything. Whilst the idea of paying for phones by extension may not be ideal for you, for some schools it is. For us? Nah, we've got the expertise to do it all in house. Our local first schools with 30 kids total each? Not so much.

That is a really poor way of looking at IT costs, and it will bite you in the butt at some point. Every system you run has a cost to run. Hardware isn't free. Electricity isn't free. Replacement hardware isn't free. Time to maintain that hardware isn't free. Time to maintain that VM isn't free.

Running a VM costs money too - either via hardware, or cloud hosting cost. If you've got the time to do that sort of thing, good for you, not all schools do. I know our first schools didn't - which is why they bought into solutions from companies (until they joined us and we do it in our team, as we have the time). Your argument is predicated on everyone's needs being the same as yours. They aren't.

If the UK determines the same thing as Germany, that will cause the loss of millions of pounds of IT investment overnight, rendering Chromebooks unusable, for example. Not to mention most schools and LEAs using Office 365 or Google Apps now. Then what about Windows 10 - as you say, can you turn off *all* telemetry? Or in Office? If we can't, does that not eliminate our ability to use the most popular operating system and productivity suite in the world? Rendering hundreds of millions, if not billions of pounds of IT investment worthless overnight? Extend it further, what about Azure? Or AWS? Any cloud hosting platform. Or any company that schools use that themselves use those platforms? You're talking rather a lot of billions of pounds and euros effectively useless across the EU.

There's nothing specific in copyright law for educational use of fonts, so it would fall onto the more general exceptions. I use the following when determining legality: If the font is installed on a school/institution device, then the user becomes the school/institution - as anyone using that device can use the font. Personally, I lean towards "no" when it comes to "for personal use only" licenses. I think we fail on all 4 points to be honest.

Currently using Teams with Planner here. But we're moving to Google Apps next year, so that may change!

I think the agent is confusing "not supported" with "won't work". It works just fine. We use it here.

Wow. That's appalling! Updating the safeguarding system that a lot of schools use, during a school day!!

This'll be due to using the setups folder to install the client initially - you're not likely to have the latest installers there. Theoretically, SOLUS should update it when it checks in anyway!

CPOMS integrates with SIMS just fine.

The thing is, if a company is wholly owned by a US company, we have the issue of US govt access to their assets. So, this affects basically all the big tech companies that the world now runs on. Its such a large issue that it is something that governments need to be discussing, not schools. Hell, just using Windows 10 seems to breach GDPR if this ruling is true. Or just using Office at all, not Office 365. So what are schools supposed to do? Switch to Linux?

We had issues with the latest (19XX) Office 365 edition and SIMS - printing reports from Assessment Manager failed miserably with COM errors. Downgrading to an 18XX edition of it fixed it.
