We have went from 12 physicals>LTO3 Tape to 12 virtuals>2 Host boxes>16tb SAN>16tb Diskbox>LTO 5 Tape. So we have gone from around a £54k replacement cycle over 5 years to around £35k plus reduced running and cooling costs.

Hi, We have had exactly the same issue. What we found was that there seems to be some issue with the folders that garageband automatically creates when opened for the first time by a domain user (this was version 10.0.1). We dropped back to version 6.0.5 and everything was sweet.

I am hoping so - I am even thinking of imaging the system completely as well just in case. But, I every time I see one of these white Dell behemoths it strikes fear into my heart!

I was thinking that it depends on whether if there is an independent RAID card on board, then that should be okay, but some like my own mainboard (Intel) has the RAID actually on the mainboard itself (hence why I have never configured it). I suppose upon inspection I should know which it is.

Hi All, Quick question, I got a call from a friend who is telling me that his BIOS battery needs replaced, now I know that he has one of these Dell Dimension (5200?) which has a RAID configuration and I am pretty sure they are RAID 0 by default. Would the RAID settings still retain if I swap the battery over? It's his home work PC and don't wish to lose the data

Yes teamviewer does run as a service and you can configure the client to cache the session credentials so you can connect remotely without needing any interaction from the other side.

Morning, I am playing around with Papercut Web print and I cannot find where I can add file extensions as it will only accept .PDFs at the moment, anyone know where they are hiding? Also wondering if anyone has successfully set up Papercut to be accessed outside their LAN. This is something I am not too hot on and would like the staff and pupils to access the Papercut/Print server externally to upload their jobs? Cheers in advance!

Although not rack mounted, we have an 8tb QNAP TS-412 box which has been really good even to the point where a power cut caused the RAID to drop 2 drives and corrupt the firmware. They managed via remote session to reinstall the firmware and rebuild the RAID with no data loss. Therefore I would recommend them.

Morning, Looking for best practice ideas as to setting up scan to folders for staff and pupils. We run a flavour of TASKalfa devices with embedded papercut on a CC4 network. My idea was to scan to departmental folders for staff and one folder for pupils to scan to. we hoped that there would be a way that users would enter their AD credentials to access a device and that there would be a way of auto scanning to their home folder. Also wondering if anyone has set up an address book on one of their devices and managed to export the address book to removable memory and successfully been able to import to a similar device? Any tips and suggestions most welcome!

Hi Sylv3r - No we opted for the HP Storageworks P2000 - RM broke the borked RAID array and we replaced a faulty HDD and now the scrub is completing without any errors, the corrupt VM's were rebuilt onto the good array, but I was expecting there to be a bit more resilience behind the SAN & virtual servers. Maybe most schools write to two SANs concurrently and we have factored this in?

Afternoon, We have just not long virtualized our CC4 network and all was fine for a while until a couple of our VM servers decided to BSoD on us and we need to perform a disaster recovery. What had happened was that on our 2nd array of disks, there was a heck of a lot of scrub errors and a degrading HDD on that array. Logging into the SAN web interface, there was no errors that the SAN thought was important enough to highlight in the GUI, but would continue to run corrupting data as it went along. My question is this : Our site now consists of 2x Physical Hosts 1x 16TB SAN 1x SATA 16TB RM Diskbox (first stage backup) and a LTO5 Tandberg tape loader (D2D2T in essence). Is what we experienced quite rare (should I start migrating the VM's back onto that RAID group) or should we look to use further redundancy/resilience to make data recovery quicker and easier? It took our 3rd line around 3 days to get all the VMs and the data back on line, it was squeaky bum time and don't wish it to happen again too quickly! Any suggestions welcome

@bossman : Sorry we are licenced for 4.5 but technically only at 4.4 at the moment - We haven't rolled out W8 at the moment, the pain is the lack of program sets and everything is presented on tiles whether if you like it or not lol.

@bossman Latest version of PXE as we are CC4.5 compliant with Win 8 images on board. @nickbro - wanting to avoid smart clienting, as we are heading towards a complete school hardware refresh and I don't wish to have to do a manual VGA driver install on all the new clients if we have these same issues. What would be ideal as if we were able to manipulate the main build images and slipstream in the drivers and have a build image for each OS and the one or two flavours of devices we may purchase (would account for around 6 or 8 different build images so not to confusing).

Afternoon, Just a quickie, is it safe to use a mixture of WDS on an RMCC4 network? I have a batch of machines which won't play ball with certain drivers with the RM build and was wondering if creating a new driver group in WDS and assigning the stubborn machines, it will help resolve the issue - or am I at risk of borking the postgres database on CC4? Our policy is the staff member chases for copyright clearance to format shift and they produce the email of clearance with the media. We have a DVD/VHS combi, sky box and PC connected via a Hauppage game capture device. This covers all angles of format shifting. Hope this helps.

@CHR1S - Personally I don't drive so I have no extra outlay there. I'm under a 10 minute walk from our town centre. @X-13 Your exactly right - I have a huge range of contacts that either run their own businesses or I am not shy in asking the pertinent questions in a store before making a purchase. I do what ever I can to support local independents before even considering the large corporates. I feel doing this is part of my social duty.

What I meant it to sound was I am not a browser or impulsive shopper. I could say save for 2 months and buy say a NAS box off Amazon for say £200 but if I know a local High Street store was selling them at £230 and I had to wait until next months payday to put the extra £30 to get it from the High Street, knowing that the money was going to a company that pays its dues morally, employs its staff on decent T's and C's then that can help make society richer more than ways than just fiscally.

Are you implying then that the majority of society today are morally corrupt? Then yes, would agree with you. I wouldn't dream of looking to pay less than my fair share of tax because I understand what the money in the treasury is used for. I understand that health and education rely heavily on this, so why should I look to deny them funds. Which is why every company then I know which avoids corporation tax in the UK never gets my custom. I also support the High Street. I do not care if some gadget costs £50 extra in a High Street store. I am not suckered into the "must have it and have it now" mentality. Human race needs to learn not to attach a monetary label to everything and everyone.
