Hi all, we're looking for some advice on the configuration of our network for the future... Presently we have a mix of thin clients and fat clients, there are around 260 t5720 thin clients and a mix of DC7800/7900, and older desktop machines (2.8ghz P4 and Sempron 3200+) machines and a range of HP Compaq laptops (purchased in the last two years). Our network infrastructure is run on HP ZL switches linked by fibre. We've been using this mixed thin/fat client environment for near three years now using ****** application deployment. We have been having some issues with this for some time and are looking at alternative solutions that could be used. We have a setup of 8 DL360 G5s as our terminal servers and the other usual servers that would be expected (two domain controllers and two web connect servers for ******). Perhaps less important atm the moment, we have a growing number of Macs, some dualbooting with XP and OS X and some using only OS X. We have an x serve for these. We have been looking at setting users up with roaming profiles, for use on both fat clients and thin clients. Our thin clients are running XP embedded and using the ****** webconnect client to deliver the icons for the applications. An idea we've had is to use VDI for the thin clients, enabling us to use roaming profiles and to make necessary modifications to our fat clients (removing the ****** clients and using local software/GPO on them). VMware VDI has been recommended to us and we would like to know the best way to go about planning and setting such a system up. Anyone who has experience with a mixed thin/fat client system, particularly with using VDI solutions we'd be very interested to hear details please. If you're using a comparable system then we'd like to know what solution you're using, what the cost/time implications were of implementing it, what skills are required for the day to day running of it, good/bad points overall and what exactly was required for setting up. We have heard of setups like this using Linux but feel that the skills that would be required to maintain the backed of such a system are not present here... meaning this is a solution that we are unable to consider at the present time. We'd be especially interested in seeing a system like this or similar running first. We are in Birmingham and willing to travel to see a working system. Even if your system differs, we are really interested in any thin/fat client setup and the advice that you running it can give us. Thanks in advance for any input. Arthur Terry IT team

All our new IT rooms have the ultra small DC models mounted with 19" widescreen tfts. Very nice machines. The power bricks are irritating though as we have to have them on the desk with the computer.....

Don't want to end up causing more work for ourselves by having it in place. I remember our 98 machines on CC2.4 had disk protection and they never died...

We're installing OO alongside but it'll be kept well separate, ICT want to use it to show alternative software suites for some of the GCSE work and also looking at open source software. Open Office is becoming more common at home for a lot of the kids but at the moment we'd much rather stick to MS Office, more comfortable with it.

Plans made up today.... We're giving a questionnaire to all the teachers who have 07 on their new laptops to see what areas we need to pay attention to when deploying it accross the entire system. At the moment considering having department heads train their departments up in it rather than us lot do it for a load of people. We could also run a few twilights on it as well as providing all the online resources for them.

I own a nano and I'm not much a fan of it... I do rather like my 30gb Zune though, will be getting the new one when it comes out here in September (at least I think it's coming out then).

Oh dear oh dear, we are such geeks. Read about the scanner easter egg somewhere before, it would be rather good if you could upload MIDIs to your scanner. xD

Hi, I'm looking atm at using a file protection agent on our fat clients. Mainly we've been looking at Windows Steadystate, really just after any advice from people with experience here.... Some things that I've been pondering about: If we enable disc protectioen then create an image and distribute to an entire room... the disc protection will surely trap these machines in a loop, won't it? We use sysprep, is there any way to make it work sensibly with an image without having to enable it on each machine after the oobe? Making changes to machines/updates; I know you can set a time where the disc protection is disabled but what if we want to make changes to machines at another time and don't want to have to faff about with steadystate on each machine. Is there a way of managing over network or another programme that will do it? So yeh, anyone with experience who can point me in the right direction... may be able to spend some money on software if it's not too much and is actually worth it. Or is it just not worth it? (the fat clients are currently running XP... may be 7 in the future and are all on the same domain.) Thanks, Ollie.

We're licensed... installing it on all the new teacher laptops now and seeing what the general reaction is. Will push for it to be installed everywhere after we've seen how well it's received by staff. Would still be interested in any experiences anyone has to share though.

If no-one else can help then I have the old smartboard drivers at work that I can dig up for you... that is if you're trying with the latest drivers now. Try it on another computer if you can.

I could scare our techs by changing their wallpaper to this. They thought we'd got past the RM days.... I've still got a hard drive somewhere with 98 and CC2.4 installed as well....

I bet you'll get most the teachers coming to that.
