Hi all, not sure where to put this.. I currently work at a faith school and we use spreadsheets to monitor our applications. The spreadsheet is starting to become more complex and we are being asked for more data etc. Long story short, does anyone in a faith or independent school use a software package which can be tailored to their needs to manage admissions? My Sharp's aren't too bad though they do get heavily used in some areas as you would expect.

My advice? Although I don't know the size of your network. Build a new 2012 server with fresh drivers etc and migrate everyone over. Seriously unless you have to move them onto this 2k3 box because its dying, I wouldn't just go to another 2k3 box. You're just creating yourself another migration job.

In my last school, we fitted the speakers behind the basketball hoops and pulled the hoops down to expose the speakers if we were doing any events. I also had a Epson ultra short throw projector installed and had a local fabricator manufacture a cage to fit over the top to protect it, at a cost of £350. Head of PE thought it would last 2 weeks. 6 months later when I left the school it was still going strong. The only exposed bit will obviously be directly underneath for the lens. Worth considering and didn't cost the earth.

Kyocera, good solid bit of hardware but the software isn't very good. I had some in my last school and the software was always having problems, loosing IPs and crashing during big print jobs.

I don't know how to do that bit Rob, but I have setup Reason 8 on a new 64bit image and were using a license server now with a dongle in the license server (Mac Mini server). I found the registry key used to point the Reason software code meter to the license server and this updates on our group policy. I removed permissions for staff to look at student home drives as I decided that staff did not need or want to see the students areas. Only ICT support staff could look though folders for investigative purposes. We used Google Docs for this type of assessment. The teacher shared a template in Google drive with the student and revoked the share when they were finished. For controlled assessments the teachers had access to view these files and folders via a shortcut in the staff drive.

Hi all, Has anyone had to install Reason 8 on their school network. I have been given Reason 8 upgrade edition as we currently have Reason 4 installed. Reason helpfully seem to supply it in packs of 10 so for 22 copies I have 2 boxes of 10 licenses each with their own code and dongle along with 2 individual copies... Any hints/tips/advice and eduhobnobs much appreciated!!

Here in Bristol all schools which were in the Wave 1 managed service went in house. Some schools are in a large federation of academies which decided to do their own managed service between schools.

I've got ACT otherwise known as Access Control Technology of Ireland. Its a hardwired system that is on all of the classroom and external doors. Works pretty well and a company called Cyclone makes a SIMS connection module. We put all our card ID's into SIMS as a user defined field and twice per day this copies all the card IDs in SIMS to the door control server. ACT have recently brought out the wireless door handles which fits over most door hardware and should allow you to adapt your current internal doors. The external doors would need (as with any system) hard wiring and ensure that they release on fire. We use 10k MiFare cards. Most schools here in Bristol use SALTO but that system can be expensive compared to others and you need to purchase cards from SALTO. That said they do a lot of different hardware types that most other manufacturers don't. I would visit other schools with your site manager and find out the best one to fit your schools needs.
