Some success where we signed in with a school google account on the tablet and it gave us some options to manage it. The tablets would appear in the g suite console and gave us some basic options like wipe or device info. We decided against tablets in the end as we didn't think they would work well enough for our school.

Sorry, what do you mean by boot sequence exactly? I have setup MDT for deployment of W10, but using WDS to pxe boot. I've not finished yet but have a vanilla win 10 image deploying well with quite alot automated so far. Regarding naming, before I kick off an image it asks me for the name to input. You can do alot with MDT task sequence and I'm sure you could add some commands to gpupdate/restart. I've set new PC's to go to the default OU and then I just move them to where I want them.

Thanks for your help with this last week. I've been looking at it since and managed to add the remove script into MDT and it removes most of the apps. I tried a few different scripts that work slightly different but I'm struggling mainly to remove the 'people' app - that horrible icon the appears on the taskbar next to notifcations/clock etc. I tried adding 'Microsoft.People' and 'Microsoft.Windows.PeopleExperienceHost' to my xml file but neither remove the app. Have you managed to remove this or can it be managed with grou policy? There is 12 editions (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_10_editions) but the 4 you mention are the main ones. LTSC has a release every 2 years or so, the last one came out in 2019, but I've decided to go with edu.

Agreed but I think there are more versions of Windows 10 than anything MS have ever released.

I'm working on deploying the Edu version (1809) currently. I considered LTSC 2019 but found it very minimal so took a bit of advise from this post and others and decided to use Edu. So far I have setup a MDT deployment (using WDS for pxe boot), added a vanilla Edu 1809 image to deploy and customised it via MDT to automate things like time zone, keyboard and language, product key, domain join, local admin pw. I have nearly finished removing all the unwanted apps as part of the deployment (via a powershell script that runs during the final stage of deployment). I have also started testing W10 in our AD environment with current group policies (most of which work and only some old legacy group policies aren't doing so far). My server environment is WS2012R2 so I am going to add the windows 10 admx files to the central store so I can manage the win 10 specific things. One thing to consider is that Window 10 upgrade may to have to be done each summer due to the support and release cycle MS have - xx03 and xx09 per year however xx03 only have 18 months support (which is why I'm going with 1809 even though 1903 has just come out). xx03 wouldn't give you as much time to test prior to summer whereas as xx09 has 30 months support so that might be best for you. LTSC has a massive 10 years support but comes with hardly any apps (even edge isn't installed and other useful apps). I haven't tried but the advise I got was it was easier to remove the unwanted apps from edu than add the useful apps to LTSC. You will also get newer features in edu such as files on demand. Hope that helps.

Thanks for that, it looks great but its confused me a bit running through the steps as it's referring to SCCM alot. I've downloaded the ps script and xml. It then says to "create a new SCCM OSD package with these 2 files in the network source share location and distribute the new SCCM OSD legacy package to your DP’s". Have i missed something? Thanks

How did you remove the apps in the MDT task sequence? I am looking into how to do that currently but not sure whats the best way.

Thats also a good point, I hadn't thought that far ahead about having to upgrade so often after initially upgrading to Windows 10!

Thanks, I didn't realise that about the xx09 and xx03 releases so good to know. It will make things a little simpler to skip the xx03 releases all together going forwards.

Thanks for your advise, just looking at the script now. I'm not worrying about office 19 yet, going to carry on with office 2013 for the time being which I deploy via GPO and I will upgrade to office 19 in the future. I noticed the bitlocker setting in the task sequence when I was looking through. Are you disabling it? Thanks

Hello, I am currently looking into upgrading to Windows 10. I have setup to deploy via MDT and that's working really well so far. I have used the standard client task sequence but when looking through the settings not alot of it makes sense to me. I was wondering what everyone is adding, if anything, to their task sequences when setting up an image. I know theres things like removing the unwanted windows 10 apps but I have read this can also be done in GPO. Does anyone have any recommendations for the task sequence or should I just leave it and see what I can do in group policy? Thanks

I have setup an MDT server to deploy windows 10 recently, working well but currently still testing before deploying windows 10. Anyway, I had set it up based on Windows 10 1809 with the versions of MDT, Windows ADK and PE at the time. Now windows 10 1903 has been released I am wondering if I might as well go with that so that I am not behind once we start deployment. I can see MDT's last release was in Jan 19 so no need to update that. Win ADK and PE have had recent releases for Windows 10 1903 - do I need to update those on the server before trying to deploy 1903? I am just wondering for best practice now and going forwards in the future. Thanks

Hello, I am currently looking into upgrading to Windows 10 and hit a bit of a snag on the best version to use. I have setup to deploy via MDT and that's working really well so far. I am now looking at which win 10 version is best to proceed with. I have the Windows 10 edu iso and the windows 10 ltsb 2019 iso. When I add the edu iso to mdt it contains edu, edu pro, and professional so I setup a task sequence for each to compare the difference. Reading online I can see there is a few differences between those 3 like cortana and spotlight disabled. However, when I image with each different version they all appear to be the same - even in the OS info it says Windows 10 Edu regardless of the OS in the task sequence. Is this normal as the iso was Win 10 edu or have I missed something? I can image with windows 10 2019 ltsb and that is clearly the correct version however was extremely minimal when I looked what was installed! Most people on here seem to be going with edu or ltsb so I am not sure which one to go with. I believe edu is only supported for 30 months so would be a pain to have update and re-image pc's. LTSB looks like it has alot missing but the support length of 10 years looks promising. Thanks

Thanks for your reply. Sorry to ask a silly question but what do you mean by company owned devices exactly - is there a setup step to say its company owned? This says android can be managed via g suite for edu - https://edu.google.com/gsuite-editions/?modal_active=none. Is this different from the google admin console? I seem to have some options to manage android tablets in the google admin console but I'm just not sure of the capabilities as I haven't tried to manage an android tablet yet. I have seen the Chrome OS tablets and they look like a great idea. My problem is that my school now wants to ditch our Chromebook 1:1 scheme in favor of a cheap android tablet and the chrome OS tablets seem to be more expensive than the chromebooks we have been buying. Why do you say Google are giving up on android in education? If you have anymore info about that you can give me I would be really keen to read it before we go rushing into the above!

Hi, I am looking at managing android tablets myself. We already have Chromebooks and manage these in the Google Admin Console. I have seen an option to manage android tablets and android management licences appear to be possible to purchase. Is your link saying android tablets can't be managed in this way? Thanks

Thanks for your reply. That model looks really nice and at £200 not too bad, although I suspect too expensive for us. We recently been buying the Asus C202SA CB for around £180 and they've been quite good devices. They also include a 3 year onsite warranty. I like your idea about charging cabinets in form rooms although we actually don't have many kids bringing them in uncharged. The CB's are great for battery life but we have found alot of them stop charging and need replacing under warranty.

We have recently implemented sanctions, such as demerits, for students not bringing in their chromebooks, although I am not sure how effectively this is done.

Thanks for your reply. I totally agree and have made that point, however my school think that if they increase the range of devices we offer then uptake may increase. One of the biggest problems we have is students not bringing their CB's or not having one. We have made many improvements to the scheme over the last year in other areas like training. Unfortunately though I still need to look into tablet options...

Hello, I am starting to looking into tablets for our 1:1 scheme at my school. Currently we have a chromebook 1:1 scheme, but it has some problems with uptake and them being used effectively in classrooms. I won't go into the details, but our 1:1 scheme has been rushed and everything done back to front, and now my school want to offer tablets on the scheme. I am just looking for a few starting points to look at really. A few questions that I need clarification on are - what we want to actually be able to do on the tablets, which type of tablet and how to manage it, and then which model of tablet to purchase. I know iPads are manageable with things like apple configurator and other MDM's but presumably iPads are the most expensive option. Android tablets are another option but not sure of how popular these are in schools and which models to consider. We have a google domain for our chromebooks so presuming android tablets can also be managed in this way and avoids additional MDM's? Does anyone use windows tablets? I guessing there are less options for windows but I would think they would integrate well with our windows domain, although currently that is Windows 7 as we haven't had time to go to windows 10 yet. Of course, the tablet needs to be dirt cheap. I believe SLT have been googling sub £100 tablets during their meeting! Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks

I have been having this error recency on my WS2012R2 WSUS server, after its been working fine for the last 2-3 years when it was setup. I have seen the recommendations about wsus cleanup (I run this a few times a year anyway and have done recently) and also about the IIS private memory limit. I have increased the private memory from the default 1843200KB to 2843200KB, which improved it for a day, but then the reset server node error returned. I have just increased it again to 3843200KB hoping this will be enough. My question is what have you all increased it to? The server is a VM doing only WSUS and I had 4GB ram assignedbut have just increased it to 6GB. How much memory do you guys have for WSUS? Thanks
