With the solution above, I have checked the model of WAP and looks like my provider had made a mistake on their quote and intended to supply the AP832 model. However, when I asked them they have said a new universal AP is now available, will do the same price and is better. Hello, I am currently looking at upgrading our network and wireless network. Currently have HP switches, 1GB backbone, 100MB desktop. Connecting to that is a netgear wireless solution with injectors to WAPs or mini poe netgear switches. It was initially okay, reasonable coverage and working, nothing fancy though. Now we have a full blown 1:1 chromebook rollout (1000 devices aswell as the 500 windows PC's and laptops) and its struggling. I have been working with one company who have done alot of good work in the past so where my initial choice. They have proposed what seems like a sensible solution - upgrading current HP switches to 1GB, some pow where needed, a new core 10GB core switch between our core and some of the larger cabinets. In terms of wireless they are recommending Fortinet (Previously Meru) with a FortiWLC-200D & Fortinet AP822i WAP's for new wireless network. I have spoken to several other schools in my area who have Fortinet and have recommended it. I just wondered what other peoples thoughts on Fortinet are currently? Has anyone used Fortinet with Chromebooks? We have done several site surveys and really got into some detail planning so I am confident it will be a good solution and good value. Thanks

Hi, I just wondered how you have found the asus c202's in terms of reliability and if needed, warranty repairs? I am looking at buying 200 shortly as part of our 1:1 scheme, and the device looks great. It comes with a 3 year warranty which has been a big pro, but have been reading lots of horror stories when it comes to asus honoring the warranty. Thanks

Hello, We have been using GADS/GAPS for a little while now and its been setup and running without issue. Over the summer we decommissioned an old DC and setup a new one. I then installed GAPS on the new DC and all seemed well, configured and authorized okay, etc. I have recently realised though that some users passwords are not syncing to Google Apps and it appears to be the ones updated from AD on the new DC. The other DC is still working fine with GAPS. I am receiving the error in event logs: The description for Event ID 41777 from source Google Apps Password Sync (Google Connector) [password_sync_service] cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event: Google Apps Password Sync (Google Connector) [password_sync_service] An API call to the Google server returned an unexpected response while updating the password for account '[email protected]' during the 'PasswordSyncTask::PatchUser' step; all retries have been exhausted. I can't comment on Dpm as haven't used it. The number of servers you have seems quite overwhelming and I thought we had a lot at 18! First I would look at what you have on each server and how often you need to back them up. Secondly how far do you want to retain backups for. Finally what might you need to change or put into place to meet those needs. Start to prioritise and draw up a backup plan. My backup solution at the moment uses backup exec to backup files and server system state backups for some servers. We do differential backups daily (mon to fri) to disc. Retention is controlled by backup exec and is set to 4 weeks before they can be overwritten. We also duplicate each Friday differential backup to tape. We do a monthly full backup, again retention controlled by backup exec and set to 4 weeks. Monthly backups are always duplicate to tape and we store these in a fire proof safe for 6 months. Essentially we are able to restore data up to 6 months ago. The solution works pretty well but but I have some issues as I am running out of disc storage now due to data growth. I have 5 Tb of backup disc storage. My full backups are getting on for 3 tb and diffs are usually between 150gb and 200gb. I also perform as hoc windows server backups on most of my servers (anything 2008 + can do these) and these allow for an image backup of each server which I store on a nas. Finally VSS is a good option to use, particularly on your file server, as an option to complement your main backup solution. It's not a true backup, as it stores copies of files on the local volume. We use them for quick file restoration and have these configured for 7am, 11am and 1.30pm. Hope that helps.

I think 3 would be possible and then means all my eggs aren't in one basket. 4 might be a stretch on budget but could look at an extra one in the future. Serversource have some great offers on and at the moment they are doing buy one get one free. The R720 I currently have I could upgrade too.

Yes we do have an EES but its only for desktop OS/CALS/Office. My manager never likes to add the server licences onto it. Are you saying to purchase 2012 datacentre x1 to add onto the EES annually and then I can create as many 2012 datacentre VM's as I like? I have recently been buying 2012R2 standard, which allows for 2 VM's per licence. I must admit I haven't tried Hyper-v yet, mainly because we have started down the VMware road. I was preferring to use several hosts rather than a SAN. I want to get rid of our current SAN due to age/hardware failure. We can't afford a new one and definitely can't afford two. So, if I was to use several hosts how many might you recommend for around 20 VM's? If I was to use several hosts with local disks, how would I be best to tackle the file server? Its currently physical and connected to a 5TB SAN for user data, about 60% full. If I setup a VM for it, would I just create one big virtual hard disk or multiple ones for the data and store this on the host server (therefore requiring alot of space on the hosts)? Thanks

Thanks, 3s-gtech. That makes sense to use a USB/SD Card with the points you mentioned. I will definitely look to do that when setting up the new Hosts. I agree with you on RAID10 over RAID5. I have experienced myself that pitfall with RAID5.

Are you using free ESXi with veaam? Veaam told me I needed to use paid ESXi to use it. Also, I have been looking at veeam a little bit and was wondering where is best to install it? E.g. on a VM or a separate physical server?

Hello, I am currently looking into virtualizing our servers and I need some help on the kind of setup that would be best. First a little background. We are a large high school with about 1500 users. We have 12 physical and 6 virtual Windows Servers (WS 2008 to WS2012R2) with roles such as AD Domain Controller, DHCP, File Services, Print Services, SIMS, Remote Desktop Services, WDS, WSUS, Sophos Enterprise Console. Most of the servers are around 5 years old and getting ready for replacement. I do have some knowledge of VMware ESXi since a company helped us migrate from our in house Exchange server to Office 365 last year, and they set us up with a Virtual Host Server with a few VM's on (DC/Mail Relay/Remote access (RemoteApp and Desktop Connection). Since then I have dabbled with ESXi and setup another virtual host on an older server to learn the installation process and setup a couple of VM's (WSUS and a web server) so I feel pretty comfortable with ESXi. I have been reading up about other peoples scenarios and what kind of solutions people are implementing. For example, many people are dismissing SAN's and suggesting 2 or 3 hosts with local storage and then either replicating to another host via software such as veaam and/or doing backups to a good quality NAS. I am keen to stick with VMware due having a bit of knowledge with this and the large support it has. I am conscious of ESXi's limitations with things like backups and I will also need to consider how I can backup the VM environment as I go from physical to virtual. I manually perform windows server backups and we currently use BackupExec for file backups to a B2D target and then to tape which is something I would like to improve perhaps with Veamm. Would it be worth purchasing VMware licences perhaps starting with essentials? A couple of other queries: - Workloads/IOPS - I have heard about IOPS but don't fully understand it and how people calculate this? How is it best to go about sizing up the current workloads to then figure out the spec of the host servers? - Our file server is currently physical and is connected to a SAN (for users file storage) and a DAS for B2D backups. Would you recommend setting up a virtual file server and use the local storage from the host? I am not keen on the SAN as it had a double hard drive failure a little while ago. We have about 2.5 TB of user data on our file server so I will be needed quite alot of disk space! - Where to install ESXi? To the local disks or SD card? Alot of people seem to be recommending installing ESXi to an SD card to keep the OS and datastore separate however I cannot find any information as to why. The company who setup our first virtual host server did not say anything about this and installed it to disk. - RAID level? I have seen lots of people dismissing RAID5 and recommending RAID10. With the 12 current physical servers and 6 virtual servers I would be looking at around 18 VM's in total, and perhaps a few more as I would like to separate some of the services out on to different servers. How many hosts would be needed and what kind of setup would you suggest? I will be looking for as much CPU, memory and storage as I can afford but our budgets are not huge. Realistically I would probably need a solution for under 15k and for it to maybe be phased over a couple of years. The first Virtual host I mentioned that was setup for us is a Dell R720 - 2x Intel Xeon 6 core CPU / 32 GB RAM / 600 GB storage which I could upgrade and can use this as one host. Hello, Very strange one. I want to setup a 'landing page' in sharepoint with links to Office 365 features like onedrive, word, excel etc. This is for a chromebook trial, but rather than using the Google apps, we want to use the Office 365 apps. I have come across this blog, ChromeStead: The 365 Book in Action (and why?), which shows its possible however I don't no how I can add links to one drive and office apps in a sharepoint private collect. The only things I have been able to do are email links and document apps which allow you to create word/excel/ppt apps but these save to the sharepoint site rather than the users one drive. Probably a bit of a long shot, but if anybody could offer any advise that would be great. Thanks

Thanks for your replies. I'm not really looking to setup a server as its only for him to help one student. I could install it on the teachers PC but I am just concerned of the implications of essentially installing a web service on a client PC and not knowing how it works as I haven't used it before. The standard user account permissions could be an issue though. Perhaps just setup a VM on the PC with no network access so he can have access to the software? Thanks

Hello, One of our IT teachers has asked if it would be possible to install WAMP (WampServer, the web development platform on Windows - Apache, MySQL, PHP) on a PC for him to help with a student of his who is using WAMP at home for his project. As this is a web server application I am concerned about the implications this might have for the network and whether it could inter fear with our web servers etc. I don't know alot about wamp so am a bit weary. Has anybody got any advise or had a similar scenario? Thanks

Hello, A student is having trouble uploading a particular excel file to HAP and gets an error message of 'Not Found' (attached). The excel spreadsheet is in the format of .xls and .xlsx. Both file types are whitelisted and other files including excel files upload fine. I have also tried different browsers, computers, and users but all get the same error. I have done some json debugging and get the following: 404 - File or directory not found. Server Error 404 - File or directory not found.
